The AAA mappers were driving a stock Ford Explorer in the 1990s. Not clear if they were driving alone, but I would have done the same thing.

In 2007, right before the Auto Club of Southern California fired all cartographers and stopped producing their own maps... so sad!

Photo was taken at the Pyramid Resort Book Signing event, May 5, 2007. Auto Club Baja Guide author David Brackney was there.

Now days the mapping of the back roads and updating the old maps is done peer to peer and by tracing roads & trails from Google Earth. The best source I have found is Murdocknav.com. He creates from GE and collects as many tracks as possible from volunteer contributors and tries to make a profit selling GPS background maps.
Some of the trail/road maps info you see on Nomads still have not migrated to Murdock maps. We are in the forefront for the tracks we continue to develop.
Make tracks and sent them to Murdock for others to use.

What good is a AAA insurance policy now that they don't produce their own maps, and roadside towing is widely available?

I think AAA (or ACSC) thinks everyone has a GPS in their car on in their phone, so who needs maps? I personally love to visualize places on paper, not on a glowing monitor!

They're wrong. Everyone has Baja Almanacs - the app hasn't been developed, yet.

I don't think travel to Baja plays a big role with AAA members as it had the previous 50 years. I am saying that with new cars coming with GPS built in or available on everyone's Smart Phone, the need for maps (in the USA) is not a driving financial gain for the AAA. Too bad...
