No doubt any vehicle can go 23 miles on that dirt road... I am just not going to personally recommend it to motorhomes, big campers, most trailers... that's all. I am a big fan of dirt roads... in the correct vehicle.

You don't mind slow, bumping and climbing/ twisting road mixed with construction trucks and semis, okay then. Plan on 5 mph for at least half that distance and 10 mph on the rest, is what you should expect, at best in an RV.

4Cata, I traveled this road in my 2004 24' class C RV and as David is saying I would STRONGLY recommend AGAINST it. It took us nearly 4 hours to travel the 23 miles but we chose to take this route as opposed to the whole day it would set us back to go up and around. It is obviously do-able but the rig took a beating and if presented with the same opportunity I would go up and around.

Thanks Westy, it's good to hear this from a motor home owner who has driven the road. Yes it saves hundreds of miles if you are in San Felipe and want to go to Baja Sur or even L.A. Bay... but 4 hours to go 23 miles at 5-10 mph and all the shaking of your cabinets... really can't be fun.

Thanks! I too get my 'Baja Fix' here when I am not in Baja... My photos and other posts are my way of giving a little back for all the fun then many Baja Nomads provide here.

Just a great read and wonderful pictures of your journey. Love the history lesson.

We just got back from Guerrero Negro last week and on the way home we were stopped at the usually uneventful checkpoint at Tomatal. We have passed by there many times and they have always been friendly. In fact we were showing them pictures of the fish we had caught and one of them was telling us how he would wrestle sharks at Playa Tomatal. We all were laughing.

Then a young man asks me if we had any guns. It kind of startles you at first. I said no and then he asks if we had any marijuana. Never been asked this before. I say no way and kinda chuckle. Then he asks if we had any beer. At that point I knew he was just joking around. I said yes and asked him if they all wanted some. I got an immediate NO! and some of the guys started backing away. My offer made THEM a little nervous. We all laughed some more and we were on our way.

We always approach these checkpoints with a smile and it has worked very well for us.

Well, this report was from 4 1/2 years ago and it was the last time my wife (aka 'Baja Angel') was in Baja Sur. Hopefully this summer we can try and get her back to Bahía Concepción, or beyond!

I am looking forward to seeing more Nomad trip reports from YOU in 2020!
That is the real treat here and most informative way to share, that I can think of. :light::coolup:

Well, this summer didn't pan out (for any of us)!!!

Trip Reports in 2020 will mostly be reviews of past trips just to keep the juices flowing!
