Hi Marie Rose,

Yes, power is still off here (I'm on solar backup).

All is well here. Skies are overcase and there is a good breeze but just a few sprinkles.

toneart - 9-5-2007 at 07:13 AM

Thank you Bob & Susan, Marv and Russ. I hope Henriette has squeezed out all the tears and will spare the river. I believe high tide is around 11am. That should tell us something, unless there is more hanging around the mountains behind Mulege.

This morning I awoke to dense smoke in the canyon behind my house in Nevada City, CA. The moon was glowing orange. Now the smoke is very dense and it is hard to breath. So far, I can't get any news on the local radio. We are very nervous here because it is heavily forested, very windy and bone dry. Wherever the fire is, it is over some ridges and out of sight.

So I'm sweating threats to two houses. It all makes me nervous, but I think we have dodged the bullet in Mulege...I hope.:wow:

fdt - 9-5-2007 at 07:14 AM

Yesterday you asked about the airport, I just spoke with Javier Martinez, the airport director at SJD San Jose del Cabo international an he sais ai is now at 100% operation, they still have no electric power, they are operating with emergency generators, this of course with some limitations like no AC. the building itsef is fine, some minor damage on the estetic of building other than that all ok. Airlines will be starting as normal again, the only one that changed was the AA flight that overnights, it did not and he also said that airlines like CO will be changing equipment to satisfy the demand, instead of 737 will use 757 equipment.
Most these people don't speak english, so I can't go on the air with them.
I'm right now trying CFE (electric company). I'll post

fdt - 9-5-2007 at 07:19 AM

Ok, Sergio Armando Fierro, Superintendent for CFE in the Los Cabos area, sais that energy showld be reestablished at 100% by noon today, he also said that the area of La Playa has not been assesed, since they can not acces the area as of yet, I hope Judy and family are OK, he sais that that community is very strong when it comes to things like this, precisely because of the fact that they always become incommunicated with this kind of storm.
(100% by noon, not counting La Playa what % would that be?)

Went through this puppy with ease. Some street flooding but nothing major. And how about not even one power outage:P:P. Wonders never cease:biggrin:However, haven't had any water since early last night. Loreto Bay folks will be smelly this morning. These are the times that we're thankful for installing our cisterns:tumble:

longlegsinlapaz - 9-5-2007 at 07:32 AM

No rain, light winds, city water not turned on this morning!!:( I need to take a quick shower to wash off many hours of muggyness, mop up several gallons of water in the living room & hope all the flies that hatched out & found their way in fly out before the wrath of my swatter & spray get to them! Dogs & kitten are very happy to be back outside & actually willingly went out....first time in 24 hours they did it WILLINGLY!

Very little traffic on the hwy, so the low areas between here & town are most likely impassable....as is typical. Will head up to Lomas Centenario area in about an hour to check things out up there. Based on what I see here in the rental PIT, I'd expect that water inside through windows & under unsealed doors will be the worst case scenario!

I'd say no virgins were sacrificed in the making of THIS storm!

It sounds like everyone has decided that Henriette will be taking that sharp right turn that the NWS forecasts, but the infrared loop looks to me like the eye has reformed and she is tracking straight up the SOC.

My boat house is getting some water inside now and there is still 2 hours before high tide. 2" of sand on the pad out side. Surf seems a bit bigger too. Much higher surge than John. Still no rain. High wind gust 31mph average around 20mph.:o

Here in Ejido San Lucas, there is/was very light rain, just enough to cool things down, very little wind. I do not believe there would be a problem going north from here.

Sky starting to break up as we speak(??).

Storm appears to be doing a landfall south of Guaymas and thankfully appears we have dodged a bullet up here.

E-mail from a friend in Loreto-- sent 20minutes ago-- says it's raining like crazy with high winds. It feels like a hurricane to her.

I'm happy to hear that you folks in the south got an easy hit. Hope Judy is doing well, I would imagine she's ready to tell us about it!

I'm glad to here that everyone seems to be doing OK considering the circumstances. Now if we could just get a "little" rain up here in Mexicali...

We had a decent sandstorm/thunderstorm and a few drops of rain yesterday; but, some real rain from a northern cloud band would be nice. :)

I continue to put in a good word for the people south/southeast of me. Hang in there.

Can't get out of La Paz to go north

The new overpass at the airport exit is just a bit not long enough.
On the Chametla side there is a LOT of fast moving water, probably coming from the mountains to the south where it is obviously still raining pretty good.
My best guess is at least a few hours before it is passable.

Eli - 9-5-2007 at 09:40 AM

I called a friend who lives in San Jose; they live on the West side of the Highway, in the area up from the prinicipal entrance off the highway to Downtown. They assure they are fine, although no electric and no water, their tianco blew, and the city water isn't running yet. Apart from that, they obviously had phone service, were cleaning up and of good frame of mind. They have more than 20 years cleaning up after Baja storms, they are experts at doing so.

Of course tried to call home to Los Barriles, phone rang at La Casa de Vos, (no pick up), At home at Buenas Aires, not even a phone ring. I called my Daughter's Mother in Law in Buena Vista, of course no answer. So, the silence continues to assure me that they are dealing with no power and plenty of water clean up and I bet some wind did some damage to someone, Ni Modo.

I got to unplug now, packed and on my way to the Tuxla Airport.

Best of Luck to Judy, Osprey and those in the East Cape who still haven't checked in. I know, I know, this is typical Baja weather.

vjfamily - 9-5-2007 at 09:48 AM

I called our friends in Baja Matires, near Los Barriles. Report is; heavy rain and lots of wind. No response for all other phones in area. Info will start to trickle out later in the day. Joanna

BCSTech - 9-5-2007 at 09:59 AM

I'm certainly no weatherman but does it appear to others that that the satellite photos show Henriette is actually heading slightly northwest up the SOC and not northeast as forecast by the NHC??? This could be very bad if she stays over hot water, no?

Centenario 11 AM

longlegsinlapaz - 9-5-2007 at 10:18 AM

No impassable sections heading north from Centenario towards Comitan...but a LOT of standing water along the hwy at most dirt roads creating underwater mud bogs!!! Talked with someone who tried to get into Chametla from Comitan/Centenario area & water over the hwy made it impassable for his Suzuki at the North edge of Chametla...a few higher clearance vehicles were crossing, but from Lencho's pics (thank you Lencho!) they won't make it into La Paz! My builder's stuck in La Paz & he talked with the Highway Patrol who told him they opened "the dam":?::?::?: (WHAT dam...we got a dam??) creating that major runoff at the arroyo in Fidipaz and that they plan to reopen the highway at that point around 2 PM today. Me thinks there will still be too much natural runoff through that arroyo to make that section of the hwy passable anytime today!

oldlady....that brown casa is still clinging to the hillside by it's fingertips!!! I took a few laps in your pool!:lol: but I gotta tell ya those unsecured foam blocks on the lot behind you are history...well, all but for one and a half!;) Naturally, a lot of the roads running up & down the hill have large cuts carved out of them, but all the ones I tried were passable. No workers!

PS According to Hwy Patrol...La Paz airport expected to be reopened later this afternoon/evening....getting to it might be a whoooole 'nuther story!:bounce:

I touched on that subject on last Thursdays BCS radio show and explained about El Cajoncito (the dam), you see, back in September of 1976 La Paz suffered the second wors natural disaster of México next to the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, "El Huracan Liza" were about 20 colonias just dissapeared, due to the arroyo that comes from El Cajoncito, back then there was no canal as you have right now, the one you mentioned by Fidepaz and rumor has it that the dam was intentionaly blown up by the military in order to save the more affluent people living in the downtown area, diverting the water to the poorer newer settlements of La Paz, there is no accurate number as for the people that perished but many were found buried intheire homes, theire cars as they tried to escape and many many bodyes were floating right there on the bay. It was horrilble. Now you know you have a da.

ArroyoTaxi - 9-5-2007 at 11:01 AM

From the BajaPony:
1. It is Wednesday morning and the sun has finally come out. The Hurricane passed right over us again but not near as bad as John last year but with mucho mucho agua. The arroyo at Buenos Aires is still a river but the San Bartolo has gone down. No major injuries reported so far and damage in moderate. Winds only 80 mph so not much destroyed but as I said a lot of water. The arroyo passed over the bridge north of town but it is still intact. They might have to add a few more meters on the north side. The main road, 20 de Noviembre, survived well and did its job by draining most of the water through the Costa Brava road. Generally speaking just a lot of clean up needed in town. My Compadre Rene Cortez is at this moment out in the Agua de la Costa area checking his clients and promised to bring me a detailed report of the area later today. Electric might be back within three days and water soon after. All in all things are not bad and we should thank God for once again watching over us. The road to La Paz should be open by tomorrow. Haven't heard about south yet but maybe later today. This year I suggest you not come down unless already planned as your gardeners can probably handle the clean up. More later if I see this published as I not certain of Cheryl's schedule
Saludos,
Dennis C. Riley

Skeet/Loreto - 9-5-2007 at 11:38 AM

fdt; Thanks for the good Report.
I weathered Hurricane Lisa in a Tied down Motorhome next to Tio Don O'Niels place in Loreto.
The Arroyo to Saragosa was closed for 3 days, the Arroyos just North of Constitution was closed for 4 Days. The Debris from the Mountains was stacked 3 Feet Deep on the Beaches, 80 Tons of Piled Gravel was washed out and formed the Sandspit to the South of the Hotel Oasis.
, the Old road to San Javier was washed away, the Debris went out 7 miles and the fishing was Great with all Species feeding.

The reported number of People lost in La Paz was reported at 500 by the B=Govt. but many knowledgeable Officals reported it was near 5,000!
I had a friend who spent several days picking up bodies, they were washed 2 to 3 miles out of the Bay at La Paz.

Hope they got all the Kids out of the Arroyos.

Does anybody know how things went at Miramar at Loreto???

Surf has been building since my last post. The man door on my boat house got flattened and so the water and junk flows in. 6' waves breaking where the high tide use to be. Others that built on lower lots have water surrounding there homes or some cases it has entered the house. All the arroyos have waves breaking in them. This has turned out to be quite a storm and I've only had a tenth of an inch of rain. 4 photos to follow

Skeet...... The storm came straight up the center of the Sea of Cortez about 70 miles offshore at Loreto. It generated some big seas, but apparently there was little rain in the mountains. There is no water at all running in the arroyo south of town. I doubt the wind ever exceeded 50 knots or so and there was little wind damage.

BajaBruno - 9-5-2007 at 03:18 PM

I checked the roads out from Centenario (just north of La Paz) at 1PM.

The army checkpoint soldiers said that the highway to Loreto was open, although I saw little or no traffic coming from there. There were allowing northbound vehicles.

South into La Paz was a different story. Cars were lined up at the first vado (about 3/4 mile) south of Centenario and although I did see a semi make it, I don't know if he got past the following arroyos. A couple of macho dudes in pickups made the try, but stopped at a high spot about 1/2 way across the first vado and watched the semi, who seemed to be wading water over his axels. No cars, Jeeps, or similar vehicles were trying.

Maybe it's just in the wrong place.

That whole stretch between La Paz and El Centenario is a fine example of highway design as done by Laurel and Hardy: one would think common sense would dictate that the roadway in a vado should be above the level of the downstream arroyo that's supposed to drain it, but maybe gravity behaves differently in Chametla. --Larry

And screw up job security???:O:O:O:O:lol: Does anyone beside me truly believe that the word culvert isn't in the Spanish language? It can't be, they don't use it even when roads that "T" into the hwy sit 1-6' below hwy level!

Tomorrow's forcast calls for offshore seas at 4-5 feet, winds under 10 knots. Warmer water current have been flirting within 4-10 miles west of san Pablo - over 74 degrees.
Good fishing !!!

2030, Los Cabos

I haven't heard of any damage at the RV parks. As far as hurricanes go, it was pretty mild. Not a whole lot of damage anywhere. One death was reported on Medano Beach in San Lucas. Someone killed in the surf, which was monstrous in this area! Around 20 ft. breakers if not more. Don't know if it was Mexican or Gringo.

I tried to drive out to BajaJudy's place today but the road through the arroyo is out. They are building a new bridge over the arroyo but it isn't complete and is still unusable. I know that she and Jim are fine out there. I believe they still don't have power there in the Playita yet. And I'm sure they are busy cleaning up. Winds were reported at 75 to 80 mph late yesterday morning. The eye passed right over the top of us around 1400 - 1430. Very interesting experience. The backside of the storm was a piece of cake. Some street signs and lamposts toppled. Mud on the road in low spots. A few trees were uprooted. I have not heard of any buildings suffering significant damage. We lost a lot of our beach here on the Costa Brava.

Today was mostly sunny, light breeze, and no rain. Temps were in the low 80's. Really a very pleasant day. Things are getting back to normal very quickly.

Thanks for trying to get out to la Playita to check on the bajajudy people.

Henrietta damage/boats/Pto Escondido

rhintransit - 9-5-2007 at 10:03 PM

have just received word of storm damage in Pto Escondido. one boat, Moon Me, sank and total loss.
So far it is known there is damage to Last Mango, La Pettie, Backstreet, Western Sea , Moon Me, Erikazona and Boardroom. It is too soon to tell the extent of damage.
A couple boats, with captains on board, broke lose but were able to anchor. Only one caused damage to another boat.
I'm currently in the states will post more info as I get it.

Light rain early this AM here in T or C New Mex. Cloudy and heavier rain expected today.

What a difference a night will make in my attitude! Low tide now and groups of people are loading up on the clams that rolled up. There are thousands of them (clams). Nice West wind and clear skies and cool temps at 76º. Oh, and some works showed up to start the boathouse clean up. Life is GOOD! Thanks all for your concern! Russ

While riding the bus from Urapan to Lazaro Card##as on the mainland a few years back the bus I was on suddenly veered off the main road. There was a little dirt track that went through a river right next to a perfectly good looking bridge. A sign next to bridge read, "Use bridge only during times of high water."

The $500,000.00 bus forded a 3 foot deep river and my bag underneath got wet. Somehow, even though the bridge looked fine, I think the river ford was the better choice.

You gota love Mexico. Don't think of the "Mexican Way" as not doing things the right way... think of it as doing things until they have failed enough to ensure that a better way must be found. Sorta like Infrastructural Darwinism.

maybe that should be amended to: the mistakes that survive are the solution to the problem
