Latest from noaa

800 PM PDT FRI OCT 10 2008

SATELLITE IMAGES SHOW THAT NORBERT CONTINUES TO HAVE A WELL-DEFINED
EYE SURROUNDED BY COLD CLOUD-TOP TEMPERATURES IN THE EYEWALL.
RECENT MICROWAVE IMAGES NOW SHOW ONE DISTINCT EYEWALL SO THE
EYEWALL REPLACEMENT FROM YESTERDAY HAS BEEN COMPLETED. THERE HAVE
BEEN NO CHANGES TO THE SATELLITE CLASSIFICATIONS AND THE INITIAL
INTENSITY ESTIMATE WILL REMAIN 90 KT. THE CLOUD PATTERN IS A BIT
ELONGATED FROM NORTH TO SOUTH...HERALDING AN INCREASE IN SHEAR
SOON...BUT PROBABLY NOT SOON ENOUGH TO CAUSE NORBERT TO WEAKEN MUCH
BEFORE LANDFALL. A FASTER DECREASE IN STRENGTH SHOULD OCCUR
TOMORROW AFTER THE TROPICAL CYCLONE INTERACTS WITH LAND AND THE
SHEAR INCREASES MORE SIGNIFICANTLY. THIS WEAKENING MIGHT NOT BE
FAST ENOUGH TO BRING THE SYSTEM BELOW HURRICANE STRENGTH BEFORE
LANDFALL IN MAINLAND MEXICO...SO A HURRICANE WARNING HAS BEEN
ISSUED FOR THAT AREA. THE OFFICIAL FORECAST IS BASICALLY AN UPDATE
OF THE PREVIOUS FORECAST AND IS IN GOOD AGREEMENT WITH THE LGEM
MODEL.

THE HURRICANE APPEARS TO HAVE TURNED TOWARD THE NORTH-NORTHEAST AND
ACCLERATED A BIT TO ABOUT 10 KT. A TURN TOWARDS THE NORTHEAST AND
INCREASE IN FORWARD SPEED SHOULD OCCUR TOMORROW DUE TO STEERING
FROM A DEEP-LAYERED TROUGH DIVING INTO THE SOUTHWESTERN UNITED
STATES. MODEL GUIDANCE IS GENERALLY IN GOOD AGREEMENT AND THE NHC
FORECAST IS NOT APPRECIABLY DIFFERENT FROM THE PREVIOUS ONE. AT
THE END OF THE FORECAST...THERE WON'T BE MUCH LEFT OF NORBERT BUT
THE THREAT FOR HEAVY RAINFALL...FLASH FLOODING AND MUDSLIDES COULD
BE SIGNIFICANT OVER PORTIONS OF NORTHWESTERN MEXICO AND THE
SOUTHWESTERN UNITED STATES.

The latest shifts to the south seem to have put San Nicolas' on the fringe of the worst of it. Still, it was just a Tropical Storm that slappd the snot out of us last month! I'll be anxious to hear from Mulege in terms of precipitation.

Snow flurries in Mt. Shasta today, and sounds like a hurricane outside!

Got up to check the intermediate report they're supposed to issue at 11:00 pm to make sure it's going where they said. In San Juanico it's still nearly dead calm, wind out of the NNE at 2. No rain, no visible lightning on the horizon, no moon.

Pressure is still the same 1004mb.

Russ - 10-11-2008 at 04:51 AM

I'm surprised there is NO wind here. What I read this am Norbert has strengthened a bit and they mention it could hit the mainland as a hurricane.

Just received this from Baja Insider:
Hurricane Norbert is currently located near near 22.6N 112.3W and motion is 20° at 13kts. Central barometric pressure is estimated at 964Mb and winds are 90kts with gusts to 110kts. Norbert is now expected to make landfall as a Category 2 Hurricane just south of Magdalena Bay after dawn this morning. It is also likely that Norbert will still be a hurricane when it emerges into the Sea of Cortez near Loreto tomorrow afternoon.
Hurricane force winds extend out 35 miles. Tropical storm force winds extend out as much as 140 miles. Norbert's eye is approximately 30 miles in diameter.
As a Category 2 Hurricane, Norbert stands to be one of the most powerful hurricanes to make landfall on Baja Sur since Hurricane John tore up East Cape in 2006. Let's be careful out there folks!
~~~I hope "when it emerges into the Sea of Cortez near Loreto tomorrow afternoon." is a misprint!!! ~~~
7:15 AM Lomas Centenario ~ La Paz area....wind picking up since 6:30 AM. There was a little rain during the night, but none right now. Sunrise is starting to lighten the sky behind the mountains over the city across the bay. Lots of light to dark clouds 360 along horizon, but sky appears blue & cloudless straight up. Wind feels like it's coming from all directions, but strongest gusts are from SE.
We also had a hurricaine party last night with bajabum et al. Bob gave it to Juan to wear out fishing. Whoa...those guys can party with the best of em.
Norbert briefly regained Category 3 Hurricane Status early this morning, but has now diminished to a Category 2 Hurricane. Residents in the storm's path, particularly those along the Pacific Coast of the affected regions should locate shelters if available and remain in contact with local officials. Although no strengthening is forecast it is still possible that Norbert may again strengthen before making landfall. Norbert is a strong Category 2 Hurricane, just short of Category 3 status. You should not venture out of doors during the onslaught of this storm. Be aware of the potential for flying debris and stay clear of low lying areas that may be subject to flash flooding. Be absolutely certain of the depth of water passing over flooded roadways. Drowning is the leading cause of death in hurricanes.
oldlady - 10-11-2008 at 07:16 AM
My power went off ~9:45 to everything but the computer, modem, and phone, which are plugged into a power strip. All switches are on at the breaker box and the meter. Neighbors say theirs is off, too, but why would the one outlet still be working? Inquiring minds ...
Wind gusts, no rain at present.
Kate
Kate,
If you have one outlet working, then you still have power.
If you have 220 v. service then you might have lost a leg, Test the service in the box to see if both legs are powered up. If not then you may have had one of the three wired between the casa and the pole disconnedted.
If power in tests hot then ....
Go to the service box and recycle all breakers, there may be a trip that is not noticable to you.
11:55 Loreto Just took a drive: Juarez is under water for the last couple of blocks before the malecon. A cop is directing traffic at the dueling tortillerias on Juarez. Cars are double parked, lines are winding way out the door. Went into Juarez market--the shelves will be bare before long. The place is packed. Rain is picking up. Most streets have stretches underwater. Lights are on at the phone company; looks like those guys are working hard to keep things running. Still none of those big winds that were predicted. Will we get lucky?
We have gusty winds but nothing serious. We have occasional rain but no downpours and, at this moment, it is dark as doo doo.
The stormy weather comes and goes. As you can see from the above sat map, we are under a cloud cover but here on the ground it doesnt look as dense as that map shows.
Pretty typical weather for the outskirts of a hurricane.
DUH I forgot I has a barometer...reading 994 right now
Fast moving is a very good thing
bajajudy - 10-11-2008 at 12:05 PM
The good news is that he is moving at 15mph so should not linger too long over the peninsula.
Thought the complete picture from NHC might make some of you feel better
From NHC:
NORBERT IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTHEAST NEAR 15 MPH...24 KM/HR.
A NORTHEAST MOTION WITH AN INCREASE IN FORWARD SPEED IS EXPECTED
DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS. ON THIS TRACK...NORBERT WILL CONTINUE
TO MOVE ACROSS SOUTHERN BAJA CALIFORNINA DURING THE NEXT FEW HOURS.
THE HURRICANE IS THEN EXPECTED TO MOVE OVER THE GULF OF CALIFORNIA
AND MAKE LANDFALL IN NORTHWESTERN MEXICO TONIGHT.
Can someone go up on the telmex tower and clean the lens on the webcam? ;D
Again thanks for the up date Judy and everyone. I just got an email from my grandson in Los Barriles; y confirms that it is a mild wind there, the brunt went North, my sympaties to anyone affected, it is a son of a gun to clean up after a hurricane.
Oh que, so now I am watching what Odie will do before I send those packages. Here in Oaxaca, We had a light rain at dawn, right now some puffy clouds and blue sky, looks like the bulk of the rainy season is over here. Still, we have a few more weeks of offical tropical storm season ahead of us. Seems like one used to breath easy in Southern Baja after Oct. 10th, now we are not so sure anymore.
Rain down pour reported in Palo Verde. And I like your "all this non-technicalese!" longest legs.
On the lite side; Some people down the beach from me decided today was a good day to burn all the junk they collected since the last storm. Well, I guess that would be fine except the wind shifted and I spent a half hour looking for a fire in my house before I went out side and saw the cloud of smoke along the beach to my house. :fire: more later
The tail of this hurricane is really whipping us here in TS. I'll be glad when it moves on. Very little rain right now but some good sized gusts blowing around.
