" 2010 SANTA MARIA MISSION NOMAD RAID(CANCEL DUE TO BAD WEATHER)..

 Pages:  1    3

BAJACAT - 1-31-2010 at 09:19 PM

what would be a possible route to do in SF, Matomi or El berrendo canyon.
Punta Final sounds good too..

BAJACAT - 1-31-2010 at 09:22 PM

on the poll at the begining of this thread 6 people think this is a stupid idea, go figure..

Neal Johns - 1-31-2010 at 09:39 PM

OK, everyone,
We (Ha) have decided to cancel on the Baja Mision Trip. We have an Oregon California Trails convention 12, 13, 14 Feb. in Tubac, AZ so we will leave early and explore Arizona instead.

Have a good trip!
The swamp is waiting, waiting....

BAJACAT - 1-31-2010 at 09:47 PM

Have fun Neal, right now the trip is also questionable, due to weather...

TMW - 2-1-2010 at 08:26 AM

Neal have a good trip and remember us as we may get stuck and not make it back.

MoFish - 2-1-2010 at 04:33 PM

Thank you very much! Please post us as often as possible what you see between now and the trip!

The mission is only a dozen or less air miles from Gonzaga Bay!

BAJACAT - 2-2-2010 at 07:26 PM

dAVID HOW IS LOOKING FOR YOU, its a go ...for the trip..

David K - 2-3-2010 at 08:14 AM

Looking good Jose! Seems I paid too much taxes (don't we all) and there is a refund on its way!

Now, there is rain coming and no need to get into a mess... so let's hope it doesn't rain south of Ensenada any more!

Sounds good, lets wait and see what happens...I haven''t done my tax, I will this friday..

MoFish - 2-4-2010 at 09:18 AM

cloudy yesterday clear and cool wind out of the west today

David K - 2-4-2010 at 09:27 AM

Thank you MoFish! Please continue with the daily reports.

BajaRoadrunner - 2-4-2010 at 08:07 PM

:( Bad news! We may not be able to make this trip.

Reason: We just bought a house in Playas  so we are poor and in debt . Have been taking some time off work to do this so I may not get days off on the 12 or 15th. We are working around 70hrs a week now so my boss won't be happy if a leave on this trip.

I'll let you guys know for sure by next week.

First nobody wants to go, then the rain, now the time... :?:

BAJACAT - 2-4-2010 at 08:50 PM

It's looking grim, every day.....
Don't worry"s BRR, the mission will be there,( I hope), when you are ready

TMW - 2-5-2010 at 08:14 AM

My plans have changed a little too. I have Corp. people coming in next Thursday and Friday for budget talks. I had planned to take both days off and head down thru San Felipe to Cocos then up to Santa Ines. Now I hope to leave here Friday morning if possible, certainly before noon (I hope) and drive as far as I can. I still plan on being at Santa Ines by 10am Sat. I'm taking Tuesday and Wednesday off for a relaxed return trip.

David K - 2-5-2010 at 09:22 AM

Baja Angel and I are still hoping and planning to go... We have reservations at Baja Cactus for Friday and Sunday nights (Saturday we will be camping at the mission, hopefully).

Weather forcast for San Diego as of today (Friday) is RAIN tonight and all day Saturday. Sun, Mon, Tue clear. Wed & Thu more rain!!! YECH!!!

However, I am thinking tht this series of storms will not go south of Ensenada... :?:

I REALLY want to take my new Tacoma to the mission and put Toyota's 'Active Traction Control' (A-TRAC) to the ultimate test! Plus it will be fun camping under the stars with amigos... around the campfire.

So, who is still in the running (provided the Baja Highway doesn't get washed away again)?

Baja12valve - 2-5-2010 at 09:37 AM

Looking rather grim for me. As mentioned earlier, SAR has priority. I would really like to come. Last time there, my first and only, I did not drive all the way down. I camped at the top and rode my mountain bike to the Mission. I was the only vehicle and decided against it, but with others, I would like the challenge along with the company. For me, another trip in Spring is in order.

David K - 2-5-2010 at 09:45 AM

Well... I hope none of us is so gun-ho to do anything dumb. If the weather looks bad, then we can re-group in May (Memorial Day Weekend)... That's when we last went in (2007), and it was great!

BAJACAT - 2-5-2010 at 10:31 PM

Sounds good to me,.DK who is up for a change in Dates. IM STILL up for next week but more rain is forecast for next week. so come on nomads let us know what you guys think. Memorial Day sounds good too.

David K - 2-6-2010 at 07:22 AM

If today's and next Wed/ Thu predicted rain doesn't go south of Ensenada, we should be fine. A call to Baja Cactus will let us know how the roads to El Rosario are.

I do want to go, but dryer/ warmer conditions will be more appreciated!

MoFish - 2-6-2010 at 09:26 AM

warm and sunny today in Gonzaga Bay clear on the mountains last 2 days

El Comadante Loco - 2-6-2010 at 03:21 PM

In San Felipe fishing today, lot's of Croakers, Chanos. No rain, some clouds and a light breeze,, Great weather.. may rain tomorrow but not much if any at all.. My plan for now is to travel to Santa Ynez via San Felipe, through Gonzaga and up to SY on Friday.. If the trip is canceled I will just keep going south when I reach 1,,,

David K - 2-6-2010 at 05:19 PM

Okay Rudy... We are on standby based on weather... We really don't want to camp in mud and rain, and would save the dollars for a dryer trip if it looks questionable.

MoFish can see the hills around the mission from Gonzaga Bay, so his reports are MOST appreciated!!!

BAJACAT - 2-6-2010 at 10:25 PM

Yes the trip is on standby due to weather, we will know by tuesday, for sure on my side.. so far a few people have cancel on us...
Neal and Bajaroadrunner have cancel, wilderone have not yet confirm..

[Edited on 2-7-2010 by BAJACAT]

wilderone - 2-7-2010 at 10:30 AM

I'm still waiting on the consensus based on weather. I may go and backpack it again. Or head for Scammons and then maybe Bahia San Francisquito (never been there).

David K - 2-7-2010 at 02:18 PM

Today, I got my Hella 4000s (and light bar) installed on my new truck! Ready for any Baja darkness!!!

David, untill when should have the stand bye on effect. i Think tomorrow should be the final day to make a decision... that way we can make arraingments for this trip.

David K - 2-7-2010 at 08:57 PM

Gang, BajaCat and I talked by phone at Half Time (SuperBowl) and we will see how the next rain (Wednesday) looks for causing any issues in Baja.

MoFish can see the hills around the mission... which is just 10 miles west of Gonzaga Bay and hopefully can alert us of any rain clouds there before we leave for El Rosario on Friday morning.

If we find the road impassable to the mission (after the heavy rains of 2 weeks ago), there are other points of interest in the region (El Marmol/ El Volcan, San Fernando mission and petroglyphs, Las Pintas Fossil and Petro Grotto, San Juan de Dios...) and we can just stay at Baja Cactus for all three nights... or ?

MoFish - 2-8-2010 at 08:09 AM

hey guys yesterday was breezy and dry, today is perfect in Gonzaga Bay

David K - 2-8-2010 at 09:24 AM

Sounds Great...

This morning Ensenada forcasts show some showers tomorrow and Wednesday, then sunny the rest of the week through the weekend.

I think it will be fine for the trip...

I did put a request to Ralph at Santa Ynez, (via Elena La Loca any HAM operator, on Fred's board) if he knows the condition of the road being any worse than 'normal'.

El Comadante Loco - 2-8-2010 at 09:29 AM

Yesterday in San Felipe, no rain... Back in El Centro.
I plan to head back to San Felipe tomorrow then on Thursday head down toward Gonzaga.. I will check the status of trip on Wednesday..

David K - 2-8-2010 at 09:40 AM

Okay Rudy... As it stands now BajaCat, TW and I are going... Meeting up at Rancho Santa Ynez by 10 am.

Wilderone will be there too, and ride in with one of us.

ANYONE ELSE leaning towards going? Please post here so we will watch for you...

If the mission road is impssable becaue of the recent flash floods... beyond what we can fix... then we can explore or visit other sites:

El Marmol Onyx Mine & El Volcan Cold Water Geyser: http://vivabaja.com/marmol

Mision San Fernando & Pertroglyphs: http://vivabaja.com/missions2

San Juan de Dios: http://vivabaja.com/missions3/page9.html

Las Pintas Fossil Grotto, Waterfall, Petroglyphs: http://vivabaja.com/pintas and http://vivabaja.com/406/page5.html

I like the sprit of adventure... and glad you are going David.
All we can do is try and if we can not make the Mission we are all flexible to do any of the options you posted..
I will be at Santa Ynez Friday.. Anyone else plan to be there Friday.. Let me know, I have carne asada, beans, and tortillas for dinner.... just bring some beer...

David K - 2-8-2010 at 03:46 PM

Ham Radio contact with Santa Ynez today...

Elena La Loca has an update from Ralph, posted on Fred Metcalf's board, here: http://math.ucr.edu/ftm/bajaPages/MsgBoard/messages/1802.htm...

Another group has gone in and back out since the rain, but didn't stop at Ralph's to tell him if they got all the way to the mission.

wilderone - 2-8-2010 at 05:26 PM

Who is staying at Baja Cactus Fri?

David K - 2-8-2010 at 06:01 PM

We are and Jose (BajaCat) is... from what I heard yesterday. I think TW/ wife Shirly and Rudy (El Comondante Loco) will be camping at Santa Ynez.

BAJACAT - 2-8-2010 at 09:07 PM

Yes I will stay in BC for 2 nights, Im ready gang. truck is ready, tomorrow I will remove the steps from my truck.. and will get gear ready...

David K - 2-8-2010 at 10:30 PM

Yes! No steps, running boards, or even mud flaps are out of harm on this road!

TMW - 2-9-2010 at 08:06 AM

Sorry but I can't make this trip. I was hoping to get out of the meeting on Friday but my boss said no. After April 1st I'll be retired and won't have to attend anymore meetings. I wish you all the very best. Have a great time.

David K - 2-9-2010 at 08:12 AM

Slowly, one by one... Bummer on that TW... But, I understand fully! I actually wish I had a job to do... money is tight. Thank goodness a Baja trip is inexpensive...

It started sprinkling this morning (TUE.) in Oceanside... They predicted it would be mostly tonight and Wednesday.

KurtG - 2-9-2010 at 09:34 AM

Its all weather dependent for me since I'm on a bike. I had plannned to be in Mulege right now and come north for the mission trip but weather and other obligations have kept me up here on the central coast. My plan if the weather is good and the trip is on was to jump on the bike Thursday and be at Santa Ynez Friday but that big band of moisture headed straight toward Central Baja right now makes me think it is not going to happen. The satellite shot looks like a lot of moisture is headed straight for the middle of Baja and it looks like we could get more rain up here on Thurs. as well.

wilderone - 2-9-2010 at 09:38 AM

Guess Im sticking with BC Hotel, then - would be drier and can shower in AM, and we'll be together.

David K - 2-9-2010 at 09:42 AM

Yah, I am going to call BajaCat and suggest postponement of the MSM part. That is really a bummer, he has been planning this for months, and I wasn't real sure until recently. I will be dumb to go that far only to have it rain on us. I will email Baja Cactus and cancel our reservations... BIG BUMMER!

OKAY, I just called BajaCat and he agrees (he saw the storm front as well).

Mission Impossible, another time!

David K - 2-9-2010 at 09:45 AM

Sorry Cindi... That's the breaks in an El Niņo year! Remember Graham's second book (Journey with a Baja Burro) and how he was marooned at San Isidoro and again at San Borja because of all the rain in 1997?

What to do... well, we will be back!

Baja12valve - 2-9-2010 at 09:51 AM

Sorry to hear of the cancellation. Although I was not able to go, I was very curious to see how the trip went. Since it has been postponed, maybe the second time around I will be more free. Been there once, been dying to go back.

Steve&Debby - 2-9-2010 at 09:53 AM

So the trip is off?? Great, what date did it get moved to? We could not make this trip, off to Hawaii this thursday.

Cyanide41 - 2-9-2010 at 09:53 AM

So, is there an "alternate trip" happening? If so, what are the details? Maybe it merits it's own thread.

Not for BajaCat or us...

The next 3 day weekend that we could stretch to a 4 day might be Memorial Day (end of May). That's when we last went to Mision Santa Maria, in 2007.

No fun camping in the rain or wet ground... I am really bummed as I was very anxious to try out my New Tacoma with its 'Active Traction Control' (A-TRAC) and that road is PERFECT for testing low range four wheel drive!

I am not sure what, if anything we will do this weekend. It is too cold for Shell Island to be fun, maybe we will go to the U.S. desert (Glamis, Moab, who knows?)?

BajaRoadrunner - 2-9-2010 at 10:07 AM

Well, I'm sorry it's not going to happen but happy because I can tag along if postponed.

By the way besides rain and all other stuff happening, my home got burglarized last sunday . This next weekend is just not SMM time for us.

Sorry to hear about the cancelation.. I am off to San Felipe.. and perhaps points south...

KurtG - 2-9-2010 at 10:42 AM

This is a trip I still want to do if it gets rescheduled, since I am retired I am pretty flexible on the timing.

We are still planning our 2 week Mulege and points south in March and I will be doing a bike trip or two after that so will still get my Baja fix.

East Tijuana :(, moving to Playas in a few months if all goes well. Somewhat an improvement.

If the trip gets re-scheduled count me in.

BAJACAT - 2-9-2010 at 05:54 PM

Gang bad weather is forcing us to CANCEL the trip to the mission, it's really a bummer because I always wanted to go there. It's going to have to re-scheduled to another time maybe for MEMORIAL DAY.I might hit the Carnaval in Ensenada and due a quick trip to San Carlos hotsprings.. so untill then Nomads thanks for your support on making this trip possible, but mother nature wins this time, Im sure the mission will be there in may, thats if the storm thosen't blow the last remaning walls down... HASTA LA VISTA, IN BAJA THAT IS...........

TW time to retire, you deserve it!!!!

TMW - 2-9-2010 at 07:41 PM

Thanks Rudy. I'm game for Memorial weekend or any other that we can put together to do the Mission. It's not all lost I have some champaign that I was going to celebrate Neal and Marian's wedding anniversary at the mission so I'll drink it myself at home.

David K - 2-9-2010 at 10:53 PM

Yah TW... when that station finally lets you free... Let's party at Mision Santa Maria!!!

Bob H - 2-9-2010 at 11:39 PM

Looks like a real big front coming that way, huh? WOW. The desert will be so green after all this year's rain - a classic time to go down there to see it later on... April?

Mission Sta. Maria awaits...

Ken Cooke - 2-10-2010 at 09:50 AM

When you guys make it south, the Mission and all the fun will still be there....

David K - 2-10-2010 at 09:59 AM

Nice photos Ken!

David K - 2-10-2010 at 10:07 AM

This is the first real challange, only 1.8 miles from Santa Ynez... the hardest part is just behind the cameraman... a steep pitch... and a gully that P-nched off my mud flap in 2007. I never knew where, but when looking over Squarecircle's photos, I spotted it, after we cam home!

Here's the photo from Roy's camera at the top of that grade, and you can see my mud flap on the ground, a few feet behind my truck, next to the edge of the photo!

I know you don't want to hear it , today there is not one cloud in the sky and calm winds

David K - 2-11-2010 at 09:35 AM

Thanks... better safe than sorry! We really don't have any extra $$ for any trip, anyway... But, Baja sometimes calls to me to return, no matter what!

Pray that the American economy survives this attack on it, so we all can prosper once again!

Thanks MoFish for your reports!

Elena La Loca - 2-11-2010 at 10:22 PM

I notified Ralph XE2/N6MNO on 80m this a.m. that you had cancelled your trip.

David K - 2-12-2010 at 09:28 AM

We are doing various other things like the zoo or Disneyland... Just call me and see if we can hook up. Got any good four wheeling trails so I can use my Active Traction Control/ low range!??

Not a problem. We are going to Anza Borrego park on the 20th with some friends. It should be fun with some good 4 wheeling with definite Active Traction Control test grounds for your new Toyota. We'll find a few places like Diablo Drop Off to get it really stuck.:bounce:

David K - 2-13-2010 at 06:50 PM

Keep me in the loop on these runs Ken. Next weekend (I just remembered) is a Plaster City off road race and Josh (Elizabeth's son) is pitting one of the race trucks he works on at Stewart's Race Works. We had already offered to be there with him.

David, if someone whats to take over, that would be great, as right now I want to go but there are some isues that I have to adress firts. I don't want to star planning the trip and later not be able to go, so if you or somebody else wants to start a new thread go ahead... lets see who is interested....@ this point Im about 70% sure that I can do it..

David K - 4-29-2010 at 09:00 AM

Okay Jose... we are probably 90% sure of going... although I could use more work until then! Will it ever stop raining? LOL

Bajatripper - 4-29-2010 at 03:16 PM

So, David, are you going to start a new thread on this, or count on this one being checked by those who might be interested in going? I was hoping to make it out to the mission with the group so as to meet some of the Nomads whose words I've been reading during the last few years (long time lurker). I'll keep checking to see what develops, but you'd probably be better-served with a new thread.

I second that, Bajatripper
