Near 100 in San Diego. Homes up in flames in Carlsbad. Very windy conditions. My gratitude to firefighters everywhere. They just had to abandon houses engulfed in flames. Sad for folks who are probably watching tv and seeing their homes go up.

Sad indeed. Just watching this unfold now on FOX news. So far 6 homes/structures have burned and 15,000 homes and businesses have been ordered to evacuate. There is a fire burning alongside I-5 now.

We have a few Baja friends who live in that area, plus near Escondido. Our hopes and prayers go out to them.

Fires everywhere! Not sure which route to take to get home.

danaeb - 5-14-2014 at 02:37 PM

30 homes +/- lost in Carlsbad. Man, these firefighters are fighting a war. Tight, narrow canyons with old growth brush and houses perched right on the edges of the canyon walls. The fire is just skipping from canyon to canyon.

THIS IS THE WEATHER HERE. Not good.

No such luck DENNIS....today is supposed to be the hottest. Yesterday, when the Santa Ana's started to blow, I looked across the bay from Ensenada and could see the dust being blown almost totally obscure your location from where I was.

In the evening, when the winds shifted and started blowing in from the sea it was still very hot. I guess all the warm air blown out during the day was being blown back in.

Yeah...that place can be sweltering , but the climate is the least of their problems. The widened road has all but taken away their parking lot and it's said they may lose even more, so that will be the end.

Carbon Dioxide Levels Topped 400 PPM Throughout Northern Hemisphere In April, WMO Says

GENEVA, May 26 (Reuters) - Carbon dioxide levels throughout the northern hemisphere hit 400 parts per million (ppm) for the first time in human history in April, an ominous threshold for climate change, the World Meteorological Organization said on Monday.

The 400 ppm level in the atmosphere, up 40 percent since wide use of fossil fuels began with the Industrial Revolution, is rapidly spreading southwards. First recorded in 2012 in the Arctic, it has since become the norm for the Arctic spring.

The WMO expects the global annual average carbon dioxide concentration to be above 400 ppm in 2015 or 2016. Rising concentrations of the heat-trapping gas raise risks of more heatwaves, droughts and rising sea levels.

"Time is running out," WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud said in a statement.

"This should serve as yet another wake-up call about the constantly rising levels of greenhouse gases which are driving climate change. If we are to preserve our planet for future generations, we need urgent action to curb new emissions of these heat-trapping gases."

Almost 200 governments have agreed to work out a deal by the end of 2015 to slow climate change as part of efforts to limit the average temperature increase to two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial times.

Temperatures have already risen about 0.8C (1.4F).

In April, the U.N.'s panel of climate experts said that greenhouse gas concentrations, led by carbon dioxide, would have to be kept below 450 ppm to give a good chance of achieving the 2C goal.

The level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is seasonal, since plants absorb more in the summer months, causing a peak in the spring. The northern hemisphere, with more human-related sources of the gas, has a more pronounced seasonal cycle.

Carbon dioxide remains in the atmosphere for hundreds of years. It is emitted by fossil-fueled vehicles and coal-fired factories and power plants as well as by natural activities such as breathing.

During the last 800,000 years, the level of atmospheric carbon dioxide fluctuated between 180 ppm and 280 ppm, and has probably not been above 400 ppm for millions of years, scientists say.

With the widespread burning of coal and oil during the Industrial Revolution, the concentration of carbon dioxide rose to about 290 ppm by the end of the 19th century.

That accelerated last century, with levels between 370 and 380 ppm by the year 2000.

hvo.wr.usgs.gov/…nowatch/archive/2007/07_02_15.htm...

"Carbon dioxide is released when magma rises from the depths of the Earth on its way to the surface. Our studies here at Kilauea show that the eruption discharges between 8,000 and 30,000 metric tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere each day. Actively erupting volcanoes release much more CO2 than sleeping ones do."

"Gas studies at volcanoes worldwide have helped volcanologists tally up a global volcanic CO2 budget in the same way that nations around the globe have cooperated to determine how much CO2 is released by human activity through the burning of fossil fuels. Our studies show that globally, volcanoes on land and under the sea release a total of about 200 million tonnes of CO2 annually."

Had to search for this post, Dennis. Warm nights and hot days down south. Todos Santos is known for being the coolest weather this far south because of the sea breezes that usually prevail into August! This year is hotter than last but thankfully we still have our westerlies off the Pacific Ocean. Water temps are creeping higher, 76ish? and now we're looking at a new Storm heading north. Douglas, or Dennis? Hang in there with us.:bounce: Tio

Weather related but not to the thread title....
I have read Weather for Dummies and lotsa stuff on-line but cannot find an answer to this question...I am sure someone here will have one or two for me.
Here in BCS we started our Mid august weather in early July, so, as others have said, we are about six weeks early into the 'season'.
My question is, does this mean that we may be out of it six weeks early or is it just lengthier than previous years? I now, weather forecasting is hit or miss but it is a constant topic for the next couple of months and I had this question.
AND, to fit into the thread, the weather in my 'hood is a lot cooler and dryer than the last few days. Not barely Sunday brunch time and the breezes are already starting to pick up. This oughta dry/cool things down even more. Really a beautiful day at the moment.

BajaGringo - 7-6-2014 at 09:20 AM

If the forecasters are right and it truly is an El Niño year, all bets are off as to predicting length of "seasons" IMHO...
