Don't Blame Columbus for All the Indians' Ills

Europeans first came to the Western Hemisphere armed with guns, the cross and, unknowingly, pathogens. Against the alien agents of disease, the indigenous people never had a chance. Their immune systems were unprepared to fight smallpox and measles, malaria and yellow fever.

The epidemics that resulted have been well documented. What had not been clearly recognized until now, though, is that the general health of Native Americans had apparently been deteriorating for centuries before 1492.

That is the conclusion of a team of anthropologists, economists and paleopathologists who have completed a wide-ranging study of the health of people living in the Western Hemisphere in the last 7,000 years.

The researchers, whose work is regarded as the most comprehensive yet, say their findings in no way diminish the dreadful impact Old World diseases had on the people of the New World. But it suggests that the New World was hardly a healthful Eden.

More than 12,500 skeletons from 65 sites in North and South America -- slightly more than half of them from pre-Columbians -- were analyzed for evidence of infections, malnutrition and other health problems in various social and geographical settings.

The researchers used standardized criteria to rate the incidence and degree of these health factors by time and geography. Some trends leapt out from the resulting index. The healthiest sites for Native Americans were typically the oldest sites, predating Columbus by more than 1,000 years. Then came a marked decline.

** Our research shows that health was on a downward trajectory long before Columbus arrived,'' Dr. Richard H. Steckel and Dr. Jerome C. Rose, study leaders, wrote in ''The Backbone of History: Health and Nutrition in the Western Hemisphere,'' a book they edited. It was published in August.

Dr. Steckel, an economist and anthropologist at Ohio State University, and Dr. Rose, an anthropologist at the University of Arkansas, stressed in interviews that their findings in no way mitigated the responsibility of Europeans as bearers of disease devastating to native societies. Yet the research, they said, should correct a widely held misperception that the New World was virtually free of disease before 1492.

In an epilogue to the book, Dr. Philip D. Curtin, an emeritus professor of history at Johns Hopkins University, said the skeletal evidence of the physical well-being of pre-Columbians ''shows conclusively that however much it may have deteriorated on contact with the outer world, it was far from paradisiacal before the Europeans and Africans arrived.''

About 50 scientists and scholars joined in the research and contributed chapters to the book. One of them, Dr. George J. Armelagos of Emory University, a pioneer in the field of paleopathology, said in an interview that the research provided an ''evolutionary history of disease in the New World.''

The surprise, Dr. Armelagos said, was not the evidence of many infectious diseases, but that the pre-Columbians were not better nourished and in general healthier.

Others said the research, supported by the National Science Foundation and Ohio State, would be the talk of scholarly seminars for years to come and the foundation for more detailed investigations of pre-Columbian health. Dr. Steckel is considering conducting a similar study of health patterns well into European prehistory.

''Although some of the authors occasionally appear to overstate the strength of the case they can make, they are also careful to indicate the limitations of the evidence,'' Dr. Curtin wrote of the Steckel-Rose research. ''They recognize that skeletal material is the best comparative evidence we have for the human condition over such a long period of time, but it is not perfect.''

The research team gathered evidence on seven basic indicators of chronic physical conditions that can be detected in skeletons -- namely, degenerative joint disease, dental health, stature, anemia, arrested tissue development, infections and trauma from injuries. Dr. Steckel and Dr. Rose called this ''by far the largest comparable data set of this type ever created.''

The researchers attributed the widespread decline in health in large part to the rise of agriculture and urban living. People in South and Central America began domesticating crops more than 5,000 years ago, and the rise of cities there began more than 2,000 years ago.

These were mixed blessings. Farming tended to limit the diversity of diets, and the congestion of towns and cities contributed to the rapid spread of disease. In the widening inequalities of urban societies, hard work on low-protein diets left most people vulnerable to illness and early death.

Similar signs of deleterious health effects have been found in the ancient Middle East, where agriculture started some 10,000 years ago. But the health consequences of farming and urbanism, Dr. Rose said, appeared to have been more abrupt in the New World.

The more mobile, less densely settled populations were usually the healthiest pre-Columbians. They were taller and had fewer signs of infectious lesions in their bones than residents of large settlements. Their diet was sufficiently rich and varied, the researchers said, for them to largely avoid the symptoms of childhood deprivation, like stunting and anemia. Even so, in the simplest hunter-gatherer societies, few people survived past age 50. In the healthiest cultures in the 1,000 years before Columbus, a life span of no more than 35 years might be usual.

In examining the skeletal evidence, paleopathologists rated the healthiest pre-Columbians to be people living 1,200 years ago on the coast of Brazil, where they had access to ample food from land and sea. Their relative isolation protected them from most infectious diseases.

Conditions also must have been salubrious along the coasts of South Carolina and Southern California, as well as among the farming and hunting societies in what is now the Midwest. Indian groups occupied the top 14 spots of the health index, and 11 of these sites predate the arrival of Europeans.

The least healthy people in the study were from the urban cultures of Mexico and Central America, notably where the Maya civilization flourished presumably at great cost to life and limb, and the Zuni of New Mexico. The Zuni lived at a 400-year-old site, Hawikku, a crowded, drought-prone farming pueblo that presumably met its demise before European settlers made contact.

It was their hard lot, Dr. Rose said, to be farmers ''on the boundaries of sustainable environments.''

''Pre-Columbian populations were among the healthiest and the least healthy in our sample,'' Dr. Steckel and Dr. Rose said. ''While pre-Columbian natives may have lived in a disease environment substantially
different from that in other parts of the globe, the original inhabitants also brought with them, or evolved with, enough pathogens to create chronic conditions of ill health under conditions of systematic agriculture and urban living.''

In recent examinations of 1,000-year-old Peruvian mummies, for example, paleopathologists discovered clear traces of tuberculosis in their lungs, more evidence that native Americans might already have been infected with some of the diseases that were thought to have been brought to the New World by European explorers.

Tuberculosis bears another message: as an opportunistic disease, it strikes when times are tough, often overwhelming the bodies of people already weakened by malnutrition, poor sanitation in urban centers and debilitated immune systems.

The Steckel-Rose research extended the survey to the health consequences of the first contacts with American Indians by Europeans and Africans and the health of European-Americans and African-Americans up to the early 20th century.

Not surprisingly, African-American slaves were near the bottom of the health index. An examination of plantation slaves buried in South Carolina, Dr. Steckel said, revealed that their poor health compared to that of ''pre-Columbian Indian populations threatened with extinction.''

On the other hand, blacks buried at Philadelphia's African Church in the 1800's were in the top half of the health index. Their general conditions were apparently superior to those of small-town, middle-class whites, Dr. Steckel said.

The researchers found one exception to the rule that the healthiest sites for Native Americans were the oldest sites. Equestrian nomads of the Great Plains of North America in the 19th century seemed to enjoy excellent health, near the top of the index. They were not fenced in to farms or cities.

In a concluding chapter of their book, Dr. Steckel and Dr. Rose said the study showed that ''the health decline was precipitous with the changes in ecological environments where people lived.'' It is not a new idea in anthropology, they conceded, ''but scholars in general have yet to absorb it.''

Okay, that actually bears out what I said. What you posted above says that while it's a myth that all pre-Columbians were healthy, the ones who were healthiest were the ones in North America who followed their traditional way of life. And those are primarily the ones who died of smallpox.

Of course infection and disease wasn't unknown before that. All human cultures have had some of that.

As for gnukid's assertion that I am ignorant, or that all the natives weren't wiped out, I never said they all were. But they were certainly decimated in many areas.

And I was countering his assertion that as long as you eat well, get enough sleep and exercise, Covid isn't a threat to you, which is an absurd notion. There have been perfectly healthy 30 year olds who have gotten incredibly ill or died from Covid. Strong specimens who ate only healthy food, worked out, had no underlying conditions.

Of course healthy people with strong immune systems are better able to fight off illness, but it's not some magic pill.

It was implied that Native Americans were wiped out due to lack of smallpox vaccinations, broad Native American vaccination was in place beginning in 1832 that precipitated an increase in deaths.

CDC WHO et al state that children and those under 50 are at virtually no risk from covid flu like infections, in fact, less so than common flu, though, those at high risk, from pre-existing illness were at higher risk, such as from obesity, heart disease, hyper-tension, diabetes, cancer, respiratory illness. Those people who died were dying, and lack of proper care associated to covid hastened their deaths. There has been no justification for quarantine, restrictions, closures, face masks, social distance, alcohol hand wash, or vaccines.

Many health care management errors occurred that we must acknowledge based in fear, ignorance, and arrogance, to make this debacle much much worse, those who were ill with covid flu type illness were told to stay at home and wait it out, isolated, seniors were either isolated, some seniors were transferred to nursing homes that were understaffed without adequate staff training.

Nurses were afraid to go near patients, some patients were immediately intubated resulting %80 of those dying.

Remedies that were historically successful around the world were denied by Fauci and CDC, outpatient care, use of the family of Lysosomotropic agents, steroids, adequate nutrition, hot soups, juices, aspirin, anticoagulants etc.

We now know much more, Government health care failed, Fauci et al intentionally caused harm, flip-flopping policies, causing confusion, speaking privately in emails very differently from publicly, Fauci failed miserably on purpose, CDC Director admitted that they incentivized false case positives, intubation and death while failing to train staff how to care for covid outpatients or in hospital.

Government Health Cares actions to isolate, quarantine, restrict families visits, and provide no specific outpatient care plan, are attributed to increased deaths, in particularly in metropolitan areas such as in NYC, Italy and Spain where high risk seniors with pre-existing co-morbidities were isolated, ignored and left to die. Gov Cuomo is an example of those types of failures, he was ignorant, arrogant and failed miserably.. We could go on naming other politicians..

CDC admits that the Covid Guidelines recategorized typical illness as Covid based on assumptions, without testing or evidence.

PCR RT created case false positives due to high cycle thresholds and failure to understand the test could not be used for covid.

Today, with hindsight, and the email release of thousands of Fauci emails, we now know, there has never been an increase in risk from a covidl flu like illness, there is no increase in macro flu like deaths regionally or globally, BUT, there was intentional premeditated, planned, and executed, health policy to cause harm in the form of mental, physical and financial injury to individuals, families and especially to those at high risk while globalists and biopharma profited.

If anyone remains unaware of the fraud associated to covid they are not paying attention by personal choice.

It's up to each individual, evolve their thinking from the initial fear provoking simulated predictions of Fauci's Event 201 of millions and millions of deaths in the USA and instead note the errors, the fraud that created confusion, to support harmful health policy that exacerbated, through manipulated virus gain of function research, that made a bad flu into a global reset.

If you remain stuck in the idea that isolation, social distance, alcohol hand wash, double face mask and now vaccines are your solution to health, that is your decision, and you should accept it and be happy that you made a decision and you feel happy and protected.

No one else needs to agree with your isolation theory for survival for you to feel protected.

The rest of us are happy socializing, making contact, focusing on managing personal health with high quality diet, exercise, rest and fresh air and disregarding disreputable Fauci, Gates, CDC and Who.

I noted data errors, identified the obvious with isolation and restrictions of those at high risk, the problem with ignoring outpatient needs, shared thousands of peer reviewed studies to call into question Gov Health Policy and focus on personal health, and this entire time I worked hands on the front line in Baja to deliver care to those at risk along with everyone else, daily, in the form of delivering healthy food, visiting those left alone, and provided assistance for basic medicine because people were afraid to go to the pharmacy to pick meds.

These efforts to highlight Government health failures led us to move forward sooner with personal health management, and it saved people from mental, physical and financial harm.

I got my shots (Pfizer) when they became available through the VA system. The VA lagged behind some of the major healthcare facilities such as Kaiser and Dignity Health in our area, but I believe that the right people were eligible to be immunized first.

I know a couple that are near retirement age, that declined the shots because of the possibility of adverse long term results of this new concept! They have also made the decision to avoid travel, or situations where they would have a high risk of exposure to the virus, or where they could pass it on to others.

The wife and I and our 3 kids are vaccinated. Wife and I did J&J. Two of the kids had Covid. It was very mild for them.

Everyone I know is vacinated, save for a few healthy ppl who already had it.

CDC pausing J&J was really dumb. We'd have a bunch more vaccinated if they didn't.

The wife and I both got our 2 shots as soon as we could! That said there are and have been lots of anti-vaxers on the left as well as the right! The loudest of the anti-vaxers prior to this were well to do Progressives who wouldn't risk vaccinating their kids for the good of society and yes there were those sort of people on the Right too! That said you expect that from “Red Necks” not college grads like Kennedy!

Got my second Pfizer shot Feb 6 through VA in Los Angeles which meant I had to do two 350 mile round trips to get the shots. Did so willingly since no other option in my area right then and I had decided to go with the first available.

Smallpox vaccination in the 1800's was still extremely dangerous. Germ theory had not even been considered at that time. John Adams own family was vaccinated and the ordeal was less than pleasant, nearly fatal for some. And they had the best "doctors" of the time.

People risked getting smallpox through vaccination, or more likely, a secondary infection that led to further complications. I would assume vaccination of Native Americans was not carried out under the most antiseptic conditions. They were treated like cattle.

Since I wouldn’t be here were it not for an then “untested surgical procure” when I was 2 1/2 years old I’m not adverse to new medical treatments! However there are individual risks involved in this approach.

The current problem is complicated by a lack of faith in the veracity of the civil authorities largely based on current and past admitted bad practices and misstatements.

Demanding Citizens wear masks, or not wear masks in an ever changing series of often contradictory statements, be tested and if positive quarantine while those issuing these demands ignore them personally can’t do anything but erode public confidence!

Some reasonably ask why they and there families should take risks for the public good when those asking it of them on the one hand are on the other allowing hundreds of thousands into the country with no health screenings, testing for COVID or vaccinating them for anything! In fact without even knowing who they are or where they are!

Canada certainly isn't doing anything like this! Yet many there feel the US should!

There was no vaccine for Chickenpox when I was a kid, so I got them! I don't know if there is any long term side effects from the vaccine they now have, but the side effects of having the Pox can be Shingles, forty or fifty years later!

By the way, I had to get the new two shot Shingles vaccine earlier this year, and it was way more brutal than the Covid shots!

I got the shingles shots and I got the COVID shots. My wife had shingles for almost 4 years before she died. I would not want anyone to get it or the virus. I had no side affects from either.
