This just in from Los Barriles

Power was restored to Los Barriles and Buena Vista yesterday PM. My Compadre
Rene came back with reports from Agua de la Costa that all is well but
pruning and clean up needed. You'll probably want to give your gardeners a
bonus for this month as the storm did create a mess. Waiting now on the
water as the arroyo passed over the pump house so they'll need to dry every
thing out first. Just talked with SAPA, the water co and it seems that most
of the connections on the hill from the Delegation to Tio's are washed out
so they'll have to be repaired first. Probably late PM for water here in
town but north is another story as Buenos Aires is still not accessible.
School will probably not open till Monday. The sun is out now after having
sprinkled most of the day yesterday and at 8:00 AM this morning it was 85
degrees. Water very dirty due to the major arroyo dumpings´ so no fishing
for a couple of days. That's all for now.

Not bad here on the beach in Nopolo. Two of the public palapas blown down ,with other ones lots of ojas missing. And only did see one corner of a Loreto Bay building ( in progress ) blown down. :?:

That's one of the ones with the " concrete foam " type construction. Rebar bend over like a pretzel.

While riding the bus from Urapan to Lazaro Card##as on the mainland a few years back the bus I was on suddenly veered off the main road. There was a little dirt track that went through a river right next to a perfectly good looking bridge. A sign next to bridge read, "Use bridge only during times of high water."

The $500,000.00 bus forded a 3 foot deep river and my bag underneath got wet. Somehow, even though the bridge looked fine, I think the river ford was the better choice.

You gota love Mexico. Don't think of the "Mexican Way" as not doing things the right way... think of it as doing things until they have failed enough to ensure that a better way must be found. Sorta like Infrastructural Darwinism.

An interesting sidelight to this storm many of you are using EEBmike weather site he used to live here in La Paz but then moved to Florida so his children can have an education in the USA, he still maintains the website and someone talked to him after the storm and he said his site was getting 1000 hits an hour during the storm.

I would feel better if we heard from Judy, in Cabo. Assume she is very busy and probably power is out where she lives. I hope the books stayed dry. If anybody can get over there, please report.

info has been sparce on Los Barriles area. Glad to hear this wasn't another John. For all of you with a lot of work to do down there , may it go well for you all . To everyone who posted here. Thanks for eyewitness accounts , awesome photos and more . Nicely done

Hi all, maybe a little late, but here is all of the info on Los Barriles I have. I have been on the phone with several friends who work @ Palmas or other hotels in the area. Obviously, cell phones were up and down so the info I got was periodic.

Power was restored late yesterday afternoon on town and farther north this morning. Water is still out due to broken water lines up by the delegacion and damage to the pump house on the road out north of town. The Buenas Aires arroyo is still flowing pretty heavily and has been avoided by driving up the San Bartolo arroyo, which receded pretty quick, and back down the highway into town. A few people have passed through the arroyo in their 4WD, but water was up to the bottom of the side windows. SAPA (water co.) says a few more days before water is restored.

Downtown is a muddy mess with all of the street improvements they have been making. Apparently, the water rushed out off the main drag as designed and out to the ocean through the street opposite of Otra Vez (cannot remember the name). Mostly palm frawns down and other plants but no word of any structural damage to anyone.

So, all in all, just a big clean up. Call your gardners and have them do a once over on your property and I am sure that wil cover any evidence of the storm.

IMHO & in my experience, any storm that involves major clean-up & minor repairs is a good storm! :bounce:

Very happy all of us appear to have gotten off lightly!

If Palo blanco is where I think it is then we are neighbors almost . You will have to stop by for a beer this winter . We are going to return in Feb.

La Ribera Report

We saw the eye go by us a few miles to the west so we got what I will call a direct hit -- guess the eye went right up highway one to Los Barriles. Power was out for 72 hours. Lynda and I were stressed because my 12 year old palapa was threatening to leave the property and my 30 year old roof was sure to follow out of sheer loneliness. During the storm I interrupted my worry routine to write a little story about the nasty weather -- it will appear here as soon as I can type it up. Waiting for a report from Baja Judy saying everything is A-OK -- hope I hope.

We have been in contact with bajajudy and Jim by cell phone on an off during and after the storm -- including a call from inside the eye. They are ok, but cut off, of course. Some damage to the palapa atop their house, but nothing else major. But no ice means no cold beer. Maybe Jim will buy a generator for the next one (hint).

They say that the pangas at La Playita have have been running to Palmilla for supplies, and I think maybe some of the helecopters that are flying over San Jose are also bringing in stuff.

For the record we do have a generator but it was not a happy machine for this storm. AND if we hadnt gotten power we would not have had cold beer but thanks to many frozen water filled milk containers we didnt have to face that dreaded condition.
We are now back on the grid but still no road. The post I made this morning was on the laptop on dial up.
Still dont have time to read all the reports because of the clean up going on here but I look forward to reading how others fared.
I have pix and will upload and resize them soon.
One thing...the left jetty became a rock island...as I predicted. Hook, the ocean was pouring down that boat ramp.

We live full time here, 10 kms north of Los Barriles, on the beach and our electricity was just restored yesterday afternoon(Sat. 8th). The town was back on line a couple days previous.
Even with our new storm shutters, we had rain pouring through under 2 doors in the sala and some in the kitchen. After having been through JULLIETTE in 2001, in person, and recovering after JOHN last year (luckily we were NOT here), when we had a couple doors broken after all the old storm boards were ripped off, this one wasn't too bad.....but it started raining shortly before midnight on Monday and hardly stopped for the next 24 hrs.
I believe the "slide area" just to my south, is impassable, and the new paved road through the mts. is being cleared by crews with Caterpillers and dump trucks, etc.
Our biggest problem is the FOAM which forms in the water and washes over and blows over the casa, etc., and creates a lot of clean-up----we have had to re-paint the casa 2-3 times since JULLIETTE.
***Wondering if anyone else felt the EARTHQUAKE around 9pm, Tues. 4th?

Just wondering if any of you in La Paz have any info on the extent of the damage to the vehicles at the La Paz Mini Storage near the airport? I am due to pick up my car in early Oct. and have received word that all the hundreds of vehicles there were filled with mud and gas tanks damaged. If this is true, does anyone have info on how to get that problem resolved before arriving there? Thanks.
