It's the movement of the eye that needs attention. In Shark's latest link, it does appear to mean tracking West a tad.

All hatches battened down!

oxxo - 9-1-2009 at 12:54 PM

Report from the corridor, halfway between San Jose and San Lucas.

Jimena is reprted due west of us at the moment, approx. 100 miles out to sea. It is now moving out of our area. Rain has been light and is dry right now. Winds are variable at 20 to 30 knots, and never more. Surf is about 8 to 10 feet.

We have the windows and sliders in the casa open to catch the breeze. Our local arroyo is essentially dry. This has been pretty much a "non-event" at our location. I've seen tropical storms worse than this.

Hurricane Henrietta, a Cat 1 three years ago, which passed directly overhead, was much more interesting.

Downtown San Lucas road construction must be a mess right now - one big mud pit.

shari - 9-1-2009 at 12:55 PM

I'm not liking that latest model either sharks...looks like entering in San Ignacio lagoon at 75 mph...which is still a hefty wind...and every report the models move further north...i'm not looking forward to the next one.

but the good thing is with all this great info, we are ready a day early...good thing cause it will hit a day earlier than we thought too and looks like it might be at night.....ewwww.

Cypress - 9-1-2009 at 12:59 PM

Sharksbaja, That's one heck-uv-a storm graphic. Stormpulse! The best I've ever seen. Hope your casa on the Rio in Mulege will be OK. Good luck. Thanks!

Bill Collector - 9-1-2009 at 01:03 PM

It's raining really good right now, winds are 38 East to West. People using duct tape should be Ok for now. We have gotten 2" of rain so far, have some great pictures trying to download them..

DT.IN.LB.BAJA - 9-1-2009 at 01:03 PM

Our prayers and thoughts are with all our friends and neighbors in the East Cape. Hopefully this will pass with little wind damage and very little flooding. Please be safe and batten down the hatches!!

I like it too. someone on the Nomads recommended it a while back. When you go there, play around. It has all sorts of features.

It is getting lighter here. Gusty wind to maybe 15, no rain.

Large water gap to cross to get to San Jose which will probably become wider and wider.

2:00pm power, phone and water.

You Pacific coast folks stay safe. I guess for this situation the saying would be "one man's treasure, is another man's garbage". Sure looks like you will get the garbage.

oldjack - 9-1-2009 at 01:11 PM

In the other Jimena post OXXO is saying that the weather has passed the San Jose Area... L.B. should be in the clear momentarily.... has anyone seen the arroyo(north) with so much rain in the mountains it should be really running!!

HaciendaCerritos - 9-1-2009 at 01:13 PM

The surge is not bad here, just very slowly rising sea levels.

About hurricane winds: I remember as a kid living on Okinawa, there was a hurricane coming right at us and we were all getting ready for it. I was near the door and I heard a loud sound outside so I went out to see what it was all about. I was totally shocked and amazed (and frozen in place) watching as down the street coming at me telephone poles were snapping in half and it sounded like a train coming. It was dead still where I was - not a wind to speak of. Within seconds I was slammed by the wind and knocked down a small embankment. Actually it was rather thrilling. But this is the nature of the beast - never underestimate the power of Mother Nature. She can be sneaky.

Good luck to everyone up and down the coast(s).

DT.IN.LB.BAJA - 9-1-2009 at 01:14 PM

Paul,
Thanks for posting the pictures and please add more, if possible and remember safety first!!

We're all praying for you, dear lady.
You've got the front row seat.

shari - 9-1-2009 at 01:18 PM

the discussions are also very detailed on Stormpulse...here is the latest...discussion 16...the best part of it....NOT

THE NEW TRACK CALLS FOR LANDFALL ON THE CENTRAL BAJA CALIFORNIA
PENINSULA IN 36-48 HR.

THERE IS A CHANCE THAT JIMENA COULD INTENSIFY SOME AT THE END OF THE
EYEWALL REPLACEMENT CYCLE IF THAT HAPPENS BEFORE THE CENTER REACHES
COOLER SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURES. OTHERWISE...THE HURRICANE SHOULD
WEAKEN OVER STEADILY COOLER WATER UNTIL LANDFALL...ALTHOUGH IT IS
EXPECTED TO REMAIN A MAJOR HURRICANE UNTIL THAT TIME.

Skipjack Joe - 9-1-2009 at 01:23 PM

I think you'll be OK, Diane. It looks to me as though you'll have winds of 70mph or less. Your place should handle that fine. We had a storm like that in Half Moon Bay one winter and although the windows shook real bad, none of them broke. Boarding them up, or even taping them, may be a good idea. The roof is good as I recall.

Shari, being on that bluff like that could mean you'll that get the full force coming from the ocean. But Juan knows what he's doing.

shari - 9-1-2009 at 01:30 PM

luckily we are tucked down by the berm that the vigilancia shack is on...that is due south of us and offers us a good amount of protection...our own little hurricaine hole and the isand and reefs there break the big waves...if in fact there comes a 10' swell and it hits at high tide....the beach houses are in for a rough time.

DENNIS - 9-1-2009 at 01:37 PM

I hope the Hit rate on this thread is the only thing that breaks records. All of you folks down south are in our thoughts. Be careful.

akbear - 9-1-2009 at 01:40 PM

My thoughts and prayers are with the beautiful land and wonderful people of Baja California.

My heart aches to think these people who have so little to lose could faces losses.

Please be careful and get away from danger while you can. The stuff can be replaced.

Don't be a hero....Run Forrest, Run!

I know the people of Baja will face this challenge bravely and overcome as they always do.

They always amaze me

Cypress - 9-1-2009 at 01:51 PM

About the storm surge? For some reason or another the storm surges along Baja, east coast and west coast, don't do as much damage as those along the northern shores of the Gulf of Mexico. Alabama, Florida, Lousiana, Mississippi, and Texas get major flooding etc. Must be due to the topography?

Oso - 9-1-2009 at 01:54 PM

Latest projection I saw on Mexican TV shows it crossing mid peninsula and then heading straight up the middle of the SOC. Looks like it's coming to Yuma this weekend. Parts of Sonora are on alert. Hope it's petered out by the time it gets here but warm water often revitalizes. We can always use the rain but...

Unrelated I'm sure but it was overcast with a few showers this morning. Just enough to screw up opening day of dove season. Sux. First time I've skunked out in years. Now it's too hot to go back out for the afternoon hunt.:fire:

JESSE - 9-1-2009 at 01:54 PM

I just got a call from the CFE, they wanted to make a reservation for tonight, honestly:wow:. Lady said the national sub director is here. I told her no, we are not open, and reminded her the reason why he was here.:O

Would love to know whos the a**ho*e who opens tonight and endangers the safety of his employees.

Incredible.

Thanks Igor. Wish we were there, but a close friend has boarded up our windows and moved a few things inside.

We do think our place will be OK and as you know, we are up high enough from the ocean it should not be a problem.

We are far more worried about the safety of our friends---our place, of course, is open to them if need be.

AREA...GENERALLY WITHIN 36 HOURS.

INTERESTS ELSEWHERE IN THE BAJA CALIFORNIA PENINSULA AND IN
NORTHWESTERN MAINLAND MEXICO SHOULD MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF JIMENA.
ADDITIONAL WATCHES AND WARNINGS MAY BE REQUIRED FOR PORTIONS OF THE

FOR STORM INFORMATION SPECIFIC TO YOUR AREA...PLEASE MONITOR
PRODUCTS ISSUED BY YOUR NATIONAL METEOROLOGICAL SERVICE.

FOR STORM INFORMATION SPECIFIC TO YOUR AREA IN THE UNITED
STATES...INCLUDING POSSIBLE INLAND WATCHES AND WARNINGS...PLEASE
MONITOR PRODUCTS ISSUED BY YOUR LOCAL NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE
FORECAST OFFICE. FOR STORM INFORMATION SPECIFIC TO YOUR AREA
OUTSIDE OF THE UNITED STATES...PLEASE MONITOR PRODUCTS ISSUED
BY YOUR NATIONAL METEOROLOGICAL SERVICE.

AT 200 PM PDT...2100 UTC...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE JIMENA WAS
LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 21.9 NORTH...LONGITUDE 111.2 WEST OR ABOUT
110 MILES...175 KM...SOUTHWEST OF CABO SAN LUCAS MEXICO AND ABOUT
210 MILES...340 KM...SOUTH-SOUTHEAST OF CABO SAN LAZARO MEXICO.

JIMENA IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTH-NORTHWEST NEAR 12 MPH...
19 KM/HR...AND THIS GENERAL MOTION IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE FOR
THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. ON THE FORECAST TRACK...JIMENA WILL BE
NEAR OR OVER THE SOUTHERN PORTION OF THE BAJA CALIFORNIA PENINSULA
TONIGHT AND WEDNESDAY...AND BE NEAR OR OVER THE CENTRAL BAJA
CALIFORNIA PENINSULA WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND THURSDAY.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE DECREASED TO NEAR 125 MPH...
205 KM/HR... WITH HIGHER GUSTS. JIMENA IS NOW A CATEGORY THREE
HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE. A GRADUAL WEAKENING IS
FORECAST DURING THE NEXT 24 TO 48 HOURS. HOWEVER...JIMENA COULD BE
NEAR MAJOR HURRICANE STRENGTH WHEN IT MAKES LANDFALL.

HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 45 MILES...75 KM...FROM
THE CENTER...AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO
140 MILES...220 KM.

ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS 951 MB...28.08 INCHES.

10 INCHES OVER THE SOUTHERN HALF OF THE BAJA CALIFORNIA PENINSULA
AND PORTIONS OF WESTERN MEXICO DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS...
WITH POSSIBLE ISOLATED MAXIMUM AMOUNTS OF 15 INCHES. THESE RAINS
COULD CAUSE LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODS AND MUDSLIDES.

A DANGEROUS STORM SURGE ALONG WITH LARGE AND DANGEROUS BATTERING
WAVES WILL PRODUCE SIGNIFICANT COASTAL FLOODING ALONG THE BAJA
CALIFORNIA PENINSULA.

...SUMMARY OF 200 PM PDT INFORMATION...
LOCATION...21.9N 111.2W
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS...125 MPH
PRESENT MOVEMENT...NORTH-NORTHWEST OR 330 DEGREES AT 12 MPH
MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE...951 MB

AN INTERMEDIATE ADVISORY WILL BE ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL HURRICANE
CENTER AT 500 PM PDT FOLLOWED BY THE NEXT COMPLETE ADVISORY AT 800
PM PDT.

BajaNews - 9-1-2009 at 02:34 PM

HURRICANE JIMENA DISCUSSION NUMBER 17
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL EP132009
200 PM PDT TUE SEP 01 2009

EARLIER DATA FROM AN AIR FORCE RESERVE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT
INDICATED THAT JIMENA WAS COMPLETING ITS EYEWALL REPLACEMENT
CYCLE...WITH THE INNER EYE DISSIPATING AND THE NEW EYE ABOUT
25-30 N MI ACROSS. THE AIRCRAFT DATA SUGGEST AN INTENSITY NEAR
115 KT AT THAT TIME. SINCE THEN...THE CLOUD TOPS NEAR THE CENTER
HAVE WARMED AND THE EYE HAS NOT CLEARED OUT. BASED ON THIS...IT IS
ESTIMATED THAT JIMENA HAS WEAKENED A LITTLE MORE...AND THE INITIAL
INTENSITY IS REDUCED TO 110 KT.

THE INITIAL MOTION IS 330/10. JIMENA IS FORECAST TO CONTINUE IN A
GENERAL NORTH-NORTHWESTERLY DIRECTION DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF
DAYS BETWEEN A MID/UPPER-LEVEL LOW WEST OF THE BAJA PENINSULA AND A
MID-LEVEL RIDGE OVER NORTHERN MEXICO...WITH ALL THE TRACK GUIDANCE
REMAINING IN AGREEMENT WITH THIS SCENARIO. THE FORECAST BECOMES
LESS CONFIDENT FROM 72 HR ON DUE TO A LARGE SPREAD IN THE GUIDANCE.
THE GFDL AND GFDN STILL CALL FOR JIMENA TO TURN NORTHEASTWARD
ACROSS NORTHWESTERN MEXICO AND THE SOUTHWESTERN UNITED STATES. THE
REST OF THE DYNAMICAL GUIDANCE EITHER STALLS THE CYCLONE OVER
CENTRAL BAJA CALIFORNIA OR TURNS IT WESTWARD INTO THE PACIFIC.
THIS APPEARS TO BE DUE TO HIGHER PRESSURES DEVELOPING NORTH OF THE
CYCLONE...AND THE SYSTEM SHEARING APART AS STRONG UPPER-LEVEL
WESTERLY FLOW DEVELOPS. THE NEW FORECAST TRACK IS AN UPDATE OF THE
PREVIOUS THROUGH THROUGH 72 HR...AND THEN IS SLOWER THAN THE
PREVIOUS TRACK THEREAFTER. THE NEW TRACK IS JUST RIGHT OF THE
CENTER OF THE DYNAMICAL GUIDANCE THROUGH 72 HR...AND CLOSE TO THE
MODEL CONSENSUS THEREAFTER. THE NEW TRACK CALLS FOR LANDFALL ON
THE CENTRAL BAJA CALIFORNIA PENINSULA IN ABOUT 36 HR.

IT NOW APPEARS UNLIKELY THAT THERE WILL BE NOTABLE INTENSIFICATION
AT THE END OF THE EYEWALL REPLACEMENT CYCLE...AS JIMENA IS STARTING
TO MOVE OVER COOLER SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURES. A FASTER WEAKENING
SHOULD OCCUR AFTER LANDFALL...AND AN EVEN FASTER WEAKENING SHOULD
OCCUR WITH THE ONSET OF STRONG WESTERLY VERTICAL SHEAR IN ABOUT 72
HR. THE NEW INTENSITY FORECAST IS SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER THAN THAT OF
THE PREVIOUS ADVISORY...AND THERE IS A CHANCE THAT JIMENA COULD
WEAKEN MORE THAN FORECAST AFTER LANDFALL.

INTERESTS IN THE HURRICANE WARNING AREA ARE ADVISED THAT STRONG
WINDS WILL PRECEDE THE ARRIVAL OF THE CENTER BY SEVERAL HOURS...SO
PREPARATIONS NEED TO BE COMPLETED VERY SOON. REMEMBER NOT TO FOCUS
ON THE EXACT FORECAST TRACK SINCE DANGEROUS IMPACTS EXTEND SOME
DISTANCE FROM THE CENTER. THE FORECAST TRACK OF JIMENA IS ALMOST
PARALLEL TO THE COAST OF BAJA CALIFORNIA...AND SMALL DEVIATIONS
LEFT OR RIGHT OF THE TRACK COULD RESULT IN LARGE ERRORS IN BOTH THE
LOCATION AND TIMING OF LANDFALL.

FORECAST POSITIONS AND MAX WINDS

Extremely heavy rain in La Paz.

HaciendaCerritos - 9-1-2009 at 02:58 PM

The wind has arrived! It's been steady now for about 20 minutes - I'm not very good at estimating mph of wind, but it hasn't knocked any of our palm trees over yet so that's good. The Pool Palapa is holding it's own being tied down on 10 points to the railing around the deck.

Water is creeping up - hasn't gotten to the Beach club yet and isn't affecting any of the dunes that I can tell. Rain is intermittent.

The waves are AWESOME!!

Sad, really sad---there are always those around who mainly look to profit from a disaster-----bigger the disaster, more rewards for them.

yes, for real hurricane experience, one needs to be on the lowlands (perhaps the salt flats) at laguna san ignacio.
sure hope the lagoon people are tieing things down, the lagoon is predicted ground zero.

i wonder what happens at gurrerro negro when the salt production ponds flood -- will the bay be poisoned by the high salinity runoff?

They where dissapointed the Hurricane wasn't as strong and missed Cabo. Then the idiot probably rented a car and was "rushing" to San Carlos to see if he could catch it. What a loser, he ain't going nowhere in our roads with this weather. Hes staying in Cabo after the storm so, if anybody sees the guy vacationing in Cabo, flip him off for me por favor.

People gather at a beach in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California peninsula, northwestern Mexico, Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009. Hurricane Jimena strengthened into a Category 4 hurricane off Mexico's Pacific coast Sunday, and forecasters said it could hit the Baja California as a major storm in the coming days.

Can't agree - some people stay in their rocking chairs and criticize and some don't and adventure out into danger -- the list of those that do is endless, but the arm chair warriors far out number them.

HaciendaCerritos - 9-1-2009 at 04:40 PM

Here are a couple of shots I just took from the Hotel

True, but the sad part, I believe, is when people like them are sad that the hurricane is downsizing----what does that say about their humanity?

If someone does not expect to be rescued and ventures into the face of danger, so be it----but when they are mostly concerned about making a profit for themselves, well, I think that is different.

Around any disaster, there are always those who see it as a mainly a money making opportunity--

i am amused when old people say "youth is wasted on the young," then same old people complain about the irresponsibility of youth.

storm chasing sounds like a good adventure. good luck to them!

HaciendaCerritos - 9-1-2009 at 04:49 PM

While I was out taking these pictures there were 3 pretty beefy looking guys on the beach (non-Mexican) with official looking camera gear shooting pics as well. I wonder if they were the hurricane hunters? My guard at the gate just told me that some Americans were there a few minutes ago asking to come onto the property to take photos. He told them no and they left. Not sure if the two are connected.

Goat, I say that's the perfect time to criticize someone: He'll be a mile away and you'll have his shoes.

No wind to speak of here in La Ribera but mucho rain. Some local flooding but Lynda and I made preparations and we'll be fine.

aldosalato - 9-1-2009 at 04:58 PM

A pale sun came out through the clouds at 6pm in La Paz. Till now it seems we only had some nice badly needed rain with some wind.
If there is not an abrupt change of direction hope hurricane will keep cooling off on the Pacific side and probably we will only receive a few more rain in La Paz during the evening-night.
Probably schools will be closed tomorrow with sun shining again. All kids will be happy!!

hey Guys, ...

First, (certainly) hope you all down there are able to weather this daughter .. through until she weakens.

Other, ..

I just logged on here to say - otherwise, that ..

In general defense of the attitude/s expressed by "Josh", and friends, regarding "Jimena" - (Noted where you have, in fact .... not entirely sure), ....

Essentially, these guys (some ladies in fact), are in fact primarily meteorologists, .. together with "weather enthusiasts" of different levels - more generally, .....

And with this, the main expressions that you're noting - or have noted perhaps ... (where considering their more meteorologically-focused appreciation of "Jimena"), ....
.. have certainly all - I'm sure, been registered with a high—(certainly the highest I would guess)—regard for others, general safety and well-being.

Beyond this, I can only reiterate this idea myself again, whole-heartedly.

They don't get upset when a Hurricane doesn't kill several hundred people. Or risk other peoples lives and much needed equipment, purposedly getting into trouble.

If anybody wants to pursue stupid hobbies, thats fine, just don't get in the way or wish things go bad so you can have fun. Maybe he would love to go up to California and try to get in the middle of the fire zones, and then get upset when houses don't burn down. I bet the homeowners would beat the hell of out him if they found out.

The easiest way to share a video on here is uploading the video to Youtube or Vimeo, etc.... and then using the Flash code in the FAQ to post it here.

Personally, I find Spanish more comprehensible. I wonder what the post said before being "edited." Is this a typical Alaska way of speaking? I've heard this syntax before!

Nothing...light wind, and light rain off and on. Will see tonight, but looks like a complete miss. Everyone is so tired from getting ready they don't want to have a Pacifico!!!

Skeet...I think you may have met your match. Although with his good spelling and lack of preaching, you are still entitled to a wrong way lap with the checkered flag.:lol:

I'm glad that "so far so good", with Tia Jimena.

frizkie - 9-1-2009 at 05:51 PM

Ha!! I was just gonna say that I hoped those newly planted palms were going to hold up!!

The beach seems to be getting shorter, alright. I hope Juan is not in his office.

HaciendaCerritos - 9-1-2009 at 05:53 PM

Pacside: the water isn't close enough to worry about. Most of the water is coming in on this end. I am shocked to hear that Todos Santos has nothing - we are getting hammered here.

I just told my foreman that everything will be just fine as long as we don't hear Crash, boom, bang and glass flying. So far, so good on that end. The wind is really whipping right now.

I'm working on those videos.

HaciendaCerritos - 9-1-2009 at 05:57 PM

I'm a little worried about the new palms too. Hard to tell from here, but I think we lost at least one of them. We're trying to stay on top of these up here. None have fallen on the villas - thank you God.

So far the Hotel is holding it's own and we have no property damage that I have found. It's a little scary going outside right now.

Cypress - 9-1-2009 at 05:58 PM

mtgoat666, Fact is, I've been thru more hurricanes than you will ever have the "thrill" of experiencing. Ever heard of Camille, 1969 on the MS Gulf Coast. Just one to mention. You probably don't recall that one. They're exciting. But seeing your home destroyed? Yea, I'll take take a pass if given the choice. It's easy to view these storms from your "arm chair". You can always switch to "Dances with the Stars" and try a new step or two.
