During Baja Grande 2008, my group stumbled upon a gasping Subaru that couldn't make it up from Gonzaga to Puertecitos.


Us Jeepers had to help out, and here is what it all looked like.


This Subaru was also gasping, and hesitating. Is this problem endemic with Subarus?


Ronni's JK Unlimited Rubicon helped the Subaru pull the trailer up the grade.

Subaru's were NEVER designed to pull HUGE UGLY utility trailers up the worst grades in the Universe----------poor little Subaru!!!!

LOTS of kids walk to school in Redding, CA----------I see them every day walking past my house, and along the streets. The "danger" is highly over-hyped, IMO. There has always been danger-------it's part of life----------it is what makes us aware, and able to survive.

That's my take, anyway.

I doubt the Subaru was designed for this kind of work. The trailer might have been just a little too much for the sedan. We did not catch up with the driver to learn if he made it back to the United States or not. :?:

Its the only car I ever owned that would give me 30mpg+ at freeway speeds and 300k trouble free miles.although it is difucult to find qualified service people for one in Baja

Well it looks like the Subaru is going to survive at least for a few more miles. Woody helped us crack the magic code and Frank Subaru in National City did a few tests. It also helps that my wife's father works at a Subaru dealership in Auburn so we could compare notes. We're going to replace the plugs and go from there.

Now it's time to focus on packing for our summer trip that starts June 14th.

Put down the crack pipe....my dad has had many jeeps throughout the years....really tricked out jeeps....UNTIL the broke down.....not if....there is a reason I bought a Toyota....

I had the option of buying a pickup truck (Tacoma) for my Baja Travels, and I have seen them travel along some serious 4WD trails (namely, Swamp Lake Trail), and the IFS pickups did great along that trail. But, there is something extraordinary about pulling off the top of your Jeep, and crawling on rocks with your friends. Sure, Jeeps don't go very fast on the Hwys, but they go slow better than any vehicle out there.

Swamp Lake out of Fresno? Now we're talking my old stomping grounds. I grew up on all those trails with my dad and then in my 93 Taco...Strawberry, Swamp, Dusy, Red, Bald Mtn., Coyote....those were good days and my Taco did me well. I remember when my buddy and I did Dusy with our stock Tacos and the Jeeps guys became believers!

A stock Tacoma did The Dusy? The Getting Off 4WD Club hosted the Swamp Lake Trail run, and all of the pickups did great out there. At the time, I was driving a Ford Ranger that I wasted a lot of money attempting to build up. After 3 years of building the Ford to keep up with the Jeeps, I spent the money and bought myself a Jeep with all of the great parts already installed from the factory. I do have respect for the Toyota pickups, but I lean towards the Jeeps in terms of the engineering that went into the '03 Rubicon. I'm still real happy with mine.

When consdidering a vehicle I always look at the amount of after market parts designed to correct the short commings of
an OEM part as a possible detractor.
After market parts designed to augment performance to an already good design are not a detractor.
Most well designed vehicles are good in stock form. I hate the "well a new XXX truck will cost you X $ and another
2 to 3k to make it right.

Two stock Toys...both ways! Well, I did upgrade to BFG Mud but that was it.

When considering the Tacoma, I also figured the cost of a straight axle conversion to the overall cost of the vehicle. $5K - $7K easily - with enough lift for 35" tires, crossover steering, steering ram, and King coilovers.
