Blanca,

Not that I don't appreciate the updates, as I'm sure it's safe to say most all of us do, I wanted to ask one favor. Please don't start your reports with the above quote. It caught my breath, gave my heart a start! When I started reading, "Sad to report that Gary is...." my mind instantly went to "not with us anymore", and worse.

Nothing personal, like I said, thanks for everything you've done. Thanks to all the others as well.

I'm still hoping for a "Happy to report that Gary is..." kind of ending.

I think several Nomads have really helped in this search. Good humans for sure....................

24baja - 9-28-2013 at 08:07 PM

We drove thru from Tijuana to Bahia De Los Angeles on Sep 25 & 26, looking at each car, town and stop, we did not see anyone or any vehicle matching the description. Will keep our eyes open in LA BAY, and on the way home in two weeks. Let us know if we can help in LA BAY area. Connie & Brett

BajaBlanca - 9-29-2013 at 10:30 AM

Good point Paulina...I was just so disappointed and was venting, but you are so right. Sorry!

DavidE - 9-30-2013 at 12:36 PM

I hate to say this, but I have seen four or five individuals (men) tourists and ex-pats suffer horrid attacks of Alzheimer's down here and literally get utterly confused - dangerously so. I am not suggesting this is what happened but rather trying to encourage keeping an open mind as to causes and effects.

The U.S. Consulate in Tijuana can and will contact the US embassy in México who will in turn twist the proper knobs and access the TEC 2 CPB database showing if that license plate has re-entered the US through a POE. Either it has or it hasn't.

It sure would help to know.

lizard lips - 10-1-2013 at 07:32 AM

Has anyone talked to the family? I'm surprised they have not posted and filled us in on what they did while down here.

I know this is a personal "family thing" and very hard to swallow when a loved one is missing but they were the people who asked for help and now we are kept in the dark. I guess if they didn't post then that is a good thing but it sure would be nice to hear from them.

TMW - 10-1-2013 at 08:16 AM

Their last post was on 9-27, page 15.

lizard lips - 10-1-2013 at 08:22 AM

I know it has been four days TW but a report on who they talked with and what they did would be a benefit for others so paths don't get crossed.

BajaBlanca - 10-1-2013 at 09:03 AM

Good morningmall, there was a sighting of a vehicle matching Gary's in k
La Chorera.

Can someone tell me where La chorera is?

The family that came down, brother and sister to Gary, do not use computers. True to form, Gary does not either. They dropped off flyers at every destination they were at. They went and checked out the abandoned and stripped car on the beach.....and came up with nada.

Next on the agenda is newspapers and today I will get the info to the radio station from La Paz which all Mexicans in this neck of the woods tune into in the mornings.

Thanks all for keeping eyes and ears peeled.

lizard lips - 10-1-2013 at 09:09 AM

Thanks Blanca!

perhaps they can phone in their reports to one of the many people that do use computers, for posting here :light:

where are they focusing search this week?

bigjohn - 10-1-2013 at 09:11 AM

La Chorera - In the San Quentin area I believe.

I know it is a long shot but I have put up posters around town here in Todos Santos. You never know.

BajaBlanca - 10-1-2013 at 10:16 AM

thanks for the above links, Dennis.

You are welcome, LL

SFS, that is precisely perfect! You just never know.

DavidE ...eggzactly eggzukely eggsuckly ... He may simply be fine and dandy and hangin out somewhere fine. Or confused. The bro and sis had to go back to real life but the rest of the family, computer savvy, are persuing other avenues: the announcement will be made over the radio, hopefully tomorrow, and I requested the info be announced in Baja Norte radio too. Newspapers that you gave leads to. And I sent the. Links to online newsfeeds from Todo santos and La Paz area. If there is a local link for San Quintin area, could someone please post it here.

You know what? I just realized we should put the flyer in the Gringo Gazette. I forget about this paper since we cant get it here.....

tripledigitken - 10-1-2013 at 10:19 AM

Any system in place to alert the authorities if his vehicle crosses into US?

It was discussed, though unclear if it was put in place.

If Gary and the vehicle were entered as a missing/endangered person into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), the CBP guy in the booth would get a "hit" on the license plate........

However, since we do not know when the the missing report was filed, and the (remote) possibility that Gary reentered the US before the missing report was filed, it is important that the agency taking the missing persons report to do an NCIC Off-Line Search. This search would indicate if there were any law enforcement contacts before the M/P report was filed.

Thank you Blanca for your continuous support and many thanks to numerous posts that have been made in Gary's behalf from other subscribers. We contacted the Gringo Gazette today and they agreed to run his flyer in their paper. We have another family group that will return next week. We are in constant touch with the US Embassy and the Westminster Police Department in California. We are striving to do everything possible to locate Gary. Thank you again, the Patton Family

Maybe if you can keep us up to speed on a regular basis on what is being done/has been done, we wouldn't be duplicating efforts or offering suggestions that have already been covered.

Marla Daily - 10-1-2013 at 03:47 PM

How was the possible vehicle sighting near La Chorera received?
By whom to whom?

At this point in time, 3-weeks-out, and after having personally searched hundreds of miles of Highway 1 roadside between San Quintin and Loreto, I do believe the best efforts should be concentrated not far from Jardines/San Quintin. The dunes and beach areas south of San Quintin are notorious for unsavory incidents. I recall a gringo fisherman murdered for his new red truck a number of years ago; while car camping in the dunes many years ago two masked men with clubs attempted an assault on us at 3:00 AM. We were alerted and saved by our two dogs! Never again will we visit that area. Too many incidents reported!

happy to have found you all!

tallartist - 10-1-2013 at 08:31 PM

I believe I saw Gary in Rosarito Centro near Obrera on the beach a little over a week ago. He talked my ear off for a long time. Don't know how to reach the family. My email is tallartist@hotmail.com or call 661-123-1173. He was asking about rental prices in the area. Sorry for the delay but I am just not seeing this post.

He has not been seen since altho there have been possible sightings in CampoRene and Punta Abreojos (fishing tournament).

Flyers have been posted between the border and La Bocana, CABOMAGIC kindly posted the pic right away.
There has been a missing person report filed in the USA
The American consulate has been notified.
The Mexican navy has been notified since Gary had a red surfboard and wanted to surf (he is not an avid surfer).

Flyers are at gas stations, checkpoints and in stores. Please print some up if you can post somewhere.

Gary is tall, quite thin and a talker. He recently started drinking a little, which does not work well with his meds, this may be affecting his ability to rationalize - THIS IS CONJECTURE as we do not know if he is still drinking. He is not an avid fisherman either...he just loves Baja, the people, the views.....He does not use plastic, he has enough cash to last him awhile.

MY ORIGINAL POST:

His brother contacted me and they are very concerned! If he is at your hotel or if you see him please tell him to contact his brother. They plan on heading to San Quintin tomorrow to ask around...that was his last known location.

Thanks.....

Here is an update from the family:

1) U.S. Embassy will not report to family or anyone whether or not Gary crosses back into the States; nor will they directly inform us if they find Gary and talk to him unless he gives them permission to talk to us (these are very stringent privacy laws that the State Department must follow). Only exception is if they learn Gary is incapacitated;
2) The Tourismo in San Quintin, however, is not bound by those laws so they can share with us anything they learn and are the ones who told us about a senora seeing a car looking like Gary's 2 days last week (M&Tu) in La Chorera beach.
3) Gary could be surfing, he could be fishing, on the beach or on a boat, he could be somewhere taking pictures, and he is definitely camping so he would typically not be in a hotel til just before returning home;
4) Cell phone companies will not tell me anything even though I am the account holder (same privacy BS), not without a court order and that will take 3 weeks; their are no call records since the day he left here; he doesn't text and he does not have a smartphone. He typically would call home from a pharmacy or landline down there. Many times in the past, phones would not get thru.
5) Lastly, Gary knows where he is going; he's been doing Baja his whole life. We're not concerned because he's a rookie, we're concerned because he said he would be back to San Quintin by Sunday 9/6 and he was not, nor did he call anyone here. If he lost his phone or broke it, he may only remember 2 phone numbers but we would not expect him to use his cell anyway.
Gary's nephew is getting married this Saturday, another reason for major concern. We're pursuing more options next.
Newspapers and radio have been notified; police and emergency road services, NAVY, Army, hotels, hospitals as well.

IF anyone is in or near Bahia de Los Angeles as a possible site on east side, please keep an eye out for him there. Again, he should have black racks on the roof, and a surfboard hanging slightly out the back window or inside the car. THANK you, everyone, for your concern.

Thinking of Gary, if he is tech challenged, he may have sent a message that didn't go thru or maybe an unheard voice mail to someone.

Bi-lingual?
Those things are like car alarms. No one listens in this day and age, but your point is well made.

The flyers for Peter Jeffries worked in the past up there. I think a flyer in Rene's would get results if any results are available.

Yup, English and Spanish recordings, give the driver a handful of posters and plaster the car with the posters

If tallartist did talk to missing Gary a week ago in Rosarito Beach, wouldn't it be a safe assumption Gary is not interested in letting others know where he is? Plenty of telephones in Rosarito Beach.

It's just more of the mystery. That's why I asked about his funding. He ain't living on his good looks.
If we don't get a reply to the question about his most recent online banking activity, which by this time should be accessible for his local P.D....or whoever the family is in touch with, I'd say there is more wrong here than meets the eye.

I believe Gary has undisclosed mental issues. Doesn't make him a bad guy....so do I.
We've asked, but it's been kept more or less quiet. Nothing candid.

We don't know anything yet. Those people in the south be vigilant and continue to do whatever you've been doing until it's CONFIRMED he's ok. If he doesn't want to call home then that is his decision. There were times in my life I would have liked to just leave for a few weeks, or months, but I certainly would not put my family through all of what they have been through. It's obvious the family is not telling us everything about Garys current mental condition. I hope we all learn everything once he's found. Is anyone doing anything in Cabo and that area?

I'm beginning to think this is one big fantasy. Who's?...I don't have a clue, but the reality aspect is diminishing rapidly.

Anything to add to this, Gary's people?
You invited us into this....so join the discussion.

The question has come up about Gary's general disposition and outlook on this journey he has taken. He left in good spirits with the family, has a nice apartment and enjoys life in general. The family did not encourage him to travel alone, this was his choice. Our family is very close with each other and Gary knows he can phone anyone, anytime and receive our support. His over health is good, with several prescriptions relating to heart issues, i.e. blood pressure. Our concern is possible disorientation and confusion due to lack of daily routine. The police are monitoring any withdrawals from his account, and at this time no activity. We are relieved whenever we receive sightings, but frustrated because he still has not contacted the family. We can't thank you enough for your continued search for Gary. We do have another close up photo of Gary to post, but we were not successful, could someone please explain how to upload this photo. thank you

Here is a copy and paste from David K's post:

"Attaching an image from your PC here requires it to be under 50 kb... and you are limited to the one photo per posting.

THERE IS AN EASY WAY TO POST BIGGER PHOTOS, and the file size isn't restricted, just the pixel width... as well as posting more than one picture per post here.

Join photobucket (free), create albums and upload your photos to the albums that you want to share here.

BEFORE uploading, click on: Customize your upload options and select 640x480 (nice size for most photos) or 800x600 (max size for Nomad, for max detail, such as maps).

Select the IMG link under your photo (move mouse on photo you want to post here), and copy that IMG link...

Paste that link here where you type on Nomad... you can type in text between photos,... and you can post multiple photos in one post.

Just pre select 800 pixels wide or smaller so the Nomad page isn't distorted by giant photos, as we sometimes see here."

In response to an inquiry, Gary is approx. 6' 2", and we don't remember Gary talking about scuba diving. I have not heard absolute confirmation from Gretchen that it was Gary she spoke to. It did sound like his mannerisms, talks a lot and speaks very fast. It still does not answer the question why he has not contacted the family. Gretchen saw Gary 1st. then the flyer, so she was not able to directly ask him to phone home. We continue to believe he has possibly lost track of time, including the month ! Gretchen saw Gary 1st. then the flyer, so she was not able to directly ask him to phone home. We continue to believe he has possibly lost track of time, including the month ! What's the priority: finding him physically or finding out why he hasn't contacted family? I think most here are interested in helping with the former; I may be wrong.

OK............ So .............. We wait on a response................. Did she meet Gary or not .Tallartist has the photo. GOD I hope he's ok n just lost time in Rosarito,Like many of us have in the past.
Unfortunately most of us either told our Family good bye take a hike or I'll write you when I can. This is part of the sad tech dependent world we live in, our expectations demand contact at all times, Where Are You !
My heart is so hurt for you Patton Fam. I can't get my head around the possibility that the people and families of this great peninsula would have left this soul stranded. Yes there are the exceptions to the rule, especially in this day n age, but his demise at the hands of another would usually be dealt by someone familiar.

Marla Daily - 10-3-2013 at 05:06 PM

Sorry, but having read the recent Facebook posts of Gretchen Smith
aka "Tall Artist" in Rosarito, I am less than convinced it was Gary Patton with whom she spoke. Since she posted his missing poster on her Facebook page, and this without mention of her alleged contact with Gary Patton, she has added lots and lots of other stuff. Judge for yourself. It will be interesting to see if she returns the family's call to her. Wouldn't she have gone to the authorities if she saw him?

Gretchen saw Gary then saw the flyer/or this thread thinking it might be him.

BajaRat - 10-3-2013 at 05:13 PM

Lets hope to hear from her and end this track or move on to the next clue.....

Thanks, Ken, for clarifying that.

BajaBlanca - 10-3-2013 at 08:00 PM

Sorry this is so late, it was a busy day:

Blanca,
I spoke to tallartist in Rosarito near Obrera who confirmed that she talked to Gary for 30-40 minutes at the beach, more than a week ago and described him very accurately by height, weight, mannerisms and fitness (she said good).

Cars were not nearby so that is not confirmed, nor a surfboard or camera. They discussed surfing because she surfs as well. She has received the flyer now and is helping to distribute that information in her circle of friends there. He did not indicate where he was headed, nor where he'd been, but memory of the conversation was very scarce.

This is the best news yet because it confirms Gary is okay as of a week or more ago. We're optimistic now that Gary should surface at some point soon, so thanks to everyone for keeping the word out in hopes this can be resolved soon.

Kimberly

BajaBlanca - 10-3-2013 at 08:01 PM

And another note:

Blanca,

People should be advised to contact their own banks to learn how little information will be shared with their family members if they were lost or just wanted their family to get money out for them. Gary's son is his beneficiary on his bank account, but unless you are co-owner of the account, nothing is shared. And even then, since individuals have their own ATM cards, banks will not share the activity w/ each other card's unless by court order.

Also, please clarify that there is no diagnosed "mental condition" -- it is Gary's behavior of not calling anyone, friends nor family at home for such an extended period of time when he promised to call by 9/9, that has all concerned and looking for him. And, we are not being "close-mouthed" we don't know anything more than those reading and writing the postings, and the negative speculations about us are truly unfounded.

We're encouraged by the woman Gretchen reporting she spoke to Gary for 30-40 minutes at the beach but more than a week ago. Eventually, we hope to hear something more real time, but he can last a long time without a lot of money because he camps and surfs. Still appreciate those with helpful words of encouragement. Rest assured, family will report one or the other back to this site once situation is felt to be resolved, in gratitude for all the helpful suggestions.

Thanks, Blanca,
Kim

I don't understand all the negative towards this Gretchen and her Facebook page. She has two pages, personal and professional. The interpretation of her personal page here is confusing.

She is from Kentucky...bible belt.

and Self employed...THE GOD WE FOLLOW IS A BARRIER BREAKER , A STRONGHOLD DESTROYER

Artist...pictures...lots of pictures
Works with animal rescue groups and others...more pictures

Taught in high schools...friends...lots of friends
Professional...friends
Self employed...friends

Doesn't appear to look to be a "hero"...Hey I met this guy!

and She's in Baja looking for a little latitude like the rest of us.

Justbozo - 10-3-2013 at 09:24 PM

Gretchen spoke to the family and owes this forum nothing.

BajaLuna - 10-3-2013 at 10:24 PM

I don't know why some keep saying/thinking there is some big mystery, it all seems pretty clear to me.

Thanks for your help, Gretchen! And thanks to everyone else as well!

BajaLuna - 10-3-2013 at 10:27 PM

Let's not shoot the messenger!

shari - 10-4-2013 at 07:35 AM

Great news this morning then....a confirmed Gary sighting!!! thanks Gretchen...by the way, I have had some conversations with her on another baja forum and love her art...she's different that's all! a free thinker....so sounds like a pretty happy ending here to me.

BajaDixon - 10-4-2013 at 08:50 AM

To the family of Gary Patton- At this point I'm not sure if this was actually Gary in Rosarito or not. In any event, this is what I can offer: I am a off road traveller who is arriving in the San Quintin area next Wed. I have a new off road machine and know the area between San Jacinto ( the shipwreck area) and Santa Maria bay( near Jardines) like the back of my hand. I will scour the entire area.
On the weekend on the 12th some friends of mine and I are traveling backroads between San Quintin and Catavina.
On the weekend of the 20th I've organized a backcountry trip that circles from San Quintin to San Felipe down to LA Bay, over to the Pacific and up through Catavina to San Quintin.

If you have not heard directly from Gary by these dates please respond to this post on the open forum and I will gladly take extra steps to search these areas.

My thoughts are with you and your family as you work through this difficult time.

24baja - 10-4-2013 at 09:26 AM

We spent the day quad riding out at La Gringa and behind the main road towards the dump. we travelled as far as our quads would take us up washes yesterday and we did not see the vehicle or Gary in the North Bahia de Los Angeles area. Will keep our eyes open tomorrow when we head out towards south bay Gecko area tomorrow. Best wishes for a happy and safe return!! Connie

SoCalPattonCrew - 10-4-2013 at 10:34 AM

BajaDixon,
I imagine the entire forum will know if he has been found by the start dates of your two trips, but I have noted on our calendar to post to you by Oct. 10th. & Oct. 18th.
Thanks for your very kind offer, and once again to the entire, amazing Bajanomad forum. Thanks, too, 24Baja.
The Patton family

If in fact that was a valid Gary sighting, someone should be putting up posters in stores, taco stands, surf spots and PEMEX stations from Playas to Ensenada along the coast and free roads and the police stations, Cruz Rojo and hospitals in Rosarito, LaMision and Ensenada. If he is in that area he will either see them or someone/surfers will see him.

It was mentioned that there hasn't been any recent banking activity. What could he be living on?

tripledigitken - 10-4-2013 at 01:36 PM

I just looked in the Baja Western Onion published today online.

I did not see anything re Gary. Wasn't an advertisement supposed to be placed?

They've made it clear he'd be able to live on a beach for some time to come.

I don't think they need to outwardly (and specifically) state much else.

Knowing the cost of survival down here, I have no idea what that means. Nor do they. Nothing is for nothing down here anymore.

DENNIS - 10-4-2013 at 06:28 PM

Still missing the psycho-makeup of this man. Is he one who isolates? Or, is he one who requires interaction.
That info would be requisite in an effective search plan.
