So far the Hotel is holding it's own and we have no property damage that I have found. It's a little scary going outside right now.

Sorry to hear your getting it hard...a little more wind here now.
Not a lot yet and still no rain. Hope it holds for you too.
The clouds above look to be moving faster also and wind noise is picking up. :(

Wind is howling and hasn't let up one iota - some gusts are really bad. I have 270 palm trees here and they are getting a real beating. The pool palapa is doing good so far.

The main pool looks like the water is boiling because it's moving so much by the wind. I'll post a pic in a minute.

Paulclark - 9-1-2009 at 06:48 PM

Wind is now 45 with gusts to 55 and building on the East Cape--SSE --and rain is coming.

HaciendaCerritos, Your place looks great. The weather,so far, does not look as bad as we had thought it would be. A palm tree or two would seem like getting off easy. My house is in La Bocana, and I think it looks like we will be hit hard. Keep hoping for the best.

Hacienda Cerritos,

The sound effects of the wind crackling really augments the visual depiction of your in-the-moment video. Thank you.

Regarding the palms. When Hurricane John came down the Mulege River in a surge it knocked over two of my newly planted palms. If yours end up like mine, you can save them. I tied a rope to the rear bumper of my pickup and stood them back up. Then I shoveled in the dirt/sand that was nearby, and the tied them up to stakes until they had time to re-assimilate.

What a beautiful hacienda you have there!

I hope the worst is over for you by now.

Tony

HaciendaCerritos - 9-1-2009 at 07:07 PM

Geesh - never thought about CNN - you know - out of sight, out of mind. I did it so other Nomads could see what's coming, and we're pretty far away from the eye. You're right, a few palm trees are nothing. We are all safe and that's what matters most.

Here's the pool - looks like it's boiling.

BajaNews - 9-1-2009 at 07:08 PM

As of 5pm PDT - notice it looks to have cleared any possible hard hit on Los Cabos at this time.

just back from boarding up the casita in San roque...which is evacuated now. The swell is increasing and it is high tide right now and has already breached the area closest to the main street....tomorrow we might have Rio benito juarez!!...this is by the gas station where the segundas set up and where it floods a river once it starts raining...no wind...very hot...rain on the horizon in different places.
still selling beer!!

BajaNews - 9-1-2009 at 07:52 PM

From Pedregal (?), looking down towards Playa Solmar and Lands End - look at all the whitewater.

HaciendaCerritos - 9-1-2009 at 07:53 PM

I just went outside to look down at the Beach Club - with their lights on you can see the surf. The water is licking at their main steps right now. I can't see down the beach, only right here, but the waves are crashing in and the wind has not let up at all. I had to hide behind a pillar to keep from being pushed around.

Be safe people

Bob H - 9-1-2009 at 07:56 PM

Interesting Utube presentation, but I don't think you've seen nothing yet! I can't believe all of these people are hanging out at the waterfront with a CAT3 approaching! Wow.

Thank you all who have been posting on Jimena. I have been following faithfully. We have a casita in Los Barilles, north beach, and have been wondering how much rain/wind has been falling.
I feel the need to be there to help clean up. Any updates for this area would truley be appreciated!
Stay safe all!

HURRICANE JIMENA DISCUSSION NUMBER 18
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL EP132009
800 PM PDT TUE SEP 01 2009

SINCE THE AIR FORCE PLANE LEFT THIS AFTERNOON...VISIBLE AND INFRARED
SATELLITE IMAGES INDICATE THAT JIMENA HAS CONTINUED TO WEAKEN. THE
EYE HAS BECOME OBSCURED AND THERE HAS BEEN A GRADUAL SHRINKING OF
THE CONVECTIVE COVERAGE. FURTHERMORE...THERE HAS BEEN AN APPARENT
DETERIORATION TO THE INNER CORE. DVORAK T-NUMBERS HAVE FALLEN TO
T4.5 AND T5.0 FROM SAB AND TAFB...RESPECTIVELY. BASED UPON THE
DEGRADED SATELLITE APPEARANCE BUT ALSO USING CONTINUITY...THE
INITIAL INTENSITY IS LOWERED TO 100 KT.

THE INITIAL MOTION ESTIMATE IS 345/11...SLIGHTLY TO THE RIGHT THAN
BEFORE. THE TRACK FORECAST PHILOSOPHY IS UNCHANGED. ACCORDING TO
THE TRACK MODEL GUIDANCE...JIMENA SHOULD CONTINUE MOVING NORTH-
NORTHWESTWARD
BETWEEN A MID- TO UPPER-LEVEL LOW WEST OF THE BAJA
PENINSULA AND A MID-LEVEL RIDGE OVER NORTHERN MEXICO FOR AT LEAST
FOR THE NEXT 24 TO 36 HOURS. INCREASINGLY DIVERGENT MODEL
SOLUTIONS SUGGEST A FORECAST OF LOWER CONFIDENCE BEYOND 48 HOURS.
A MINORITY OF GLOBAL MODELS TAKES JIMENA NORTHEASTWARD OR EASTWARD
INTO NORTHWESTERN MEXICO...WITH ONLY ONE TAKING IT INTO THE
SOUTHWESTERN UNITED STATES. A LARGER NUMBER OF MODEL RUNS EITHER
STALL JIMENA OVER CENTRAL BAJA CALIFORNIA...LIKE THE GFDL...OR TURN
THE CYCLONE NORTHWESTWARD OR EVEN WESTWARD INTO THE EAST PACIFIC IN
RESPONSE MID-LEVEL RIDGING BUILDING TO ITS NORTH. THE NEW OFFICIAL
FORECAST TRACK IS SIMILAR TO THE PREVIOUS ADVISORY BUT SHIFTED
INITIALLY TO THE RIGHT DUE TO THE CURRENT MORE NORTHERLY MOTION.
THE FORECAST IS SOMEWHAT SLOWER AND TO THE LEFT OF THE PREVIOUS
TRACK BEYOND 72 HOURS AS A RESULT OF THE MODEL CONSENSUS WHICH HAS
BEEN TRENDING MORE WESTWARD.

THE WEAKENING CAUSED BY AN EARLIER EYEWALL REPLACEMENT CYCLE HAS
CONTINUED...LIKELY AS A RESULT OF GRADUALLY COOLER SSTS AND
INCREASING WESTERLY SHEAR. UW CIMSS ANALYSES SUGGESTS 10-15 KT OF
WESTERLY SHEAR OVER JIMENA...WHICH SEEMS BELIEVABLE GIVEN THE MORE
ASYMMETRIC ORGANIZATION OF THE CORE CONVECTION DURING THE LAST FEW
HOURS. PRIOR TO LANDFALL IN 12 TO 24 HOURS...THE GUIDANCE AGREES
WELL ON A CONTINUED...STEADY WEAKENING. THEREAFTER...STRONGER
WESTERLY SHEAR AND THE CENTER TRACKING MOVING OVER LAND SHOULD LEAD
TO A MORE RAPID WEAKENING... WITH THE OFFICIAL FORECAST NOW CALLING
FOR JIMENA TO BECOME A REMNANT LOW BY 96 HR. THERE REMAINS A
CHANCE THAT JIMENA COULD WEAKEN FASTER THAN FORECAST AFTER
LANDFALL.

INTERESTS IN THE HURRICANE WARNING AREA ARE ADVISED THAT STRONG
WINDS WILL PRECEDE THE ARRIVAL OF THE CENTER BY SEVERAL HOURS...SO
PREPARATIONS NEED TO BE COMPLETED VERY SOON
. REMEMBER NOT TO FOCUS
ON THE EXACT FORECAST TRACK SINCE DANGEROUS IMPACTS EXTEND SOME
DISTANCE FROM THE CENTER. THE FORECAST TRACK OF JIMENA IS ALMOST
PARALLEL TO THE COAST OF BAJA CALIFORNIA...AND SMALL DEVIATIONS
LEFT OR RIGHT OF THE TRACK COULD RESULT IN LARGE ERRORS IN BOTH THE
LOCATION AND TIMING OF LANDFALL.

FORECAST POSITIONS AND MAX WINDS

No action in La Paz, relatively calm, no rain.

It continues to look like...

Mexray - 9-1-2009 at 10:36 PM

...Mulege is in for it's third tropical 'flushing' in four years! Continued reports of 5-10 inches of rain in that whirling formation to be dumped over Baja Sur don't bode well for the estuary below town...I sure feel for all of you that may face another 'mud' intrusion, along with the high water in your casa's...it's just not fair!

Too bad there's a not a huge reservoir back in the hills to the West to contain and 'save' some of this run off for later use...

JESSE - 9-1-2009 at 10:45 PM

Anybody in San Jose or Todos Santos that can give us a report?

woody with a view - 9-1-2009 at 10:49 PM

a year and a half ago we headed west from muleje and the arroyos were still full of trees that had been uprooted. it was scary even then to imagine what caused all that destruction. with water roaring through the mountains i can't even imagine how bad it really was/is.....

buena suerte amigos!

The thing is breaking appart, i doubt its going to be a Hurricane at landfall.

At the very least, the bastard should drop more rain, havent had any rain since 4pm or so.

aldosalato - 9-2-2009 at 01:42 AM

2.30am stronger wind in La Paz but no rain
maybe Jimena started already to cross the peninsula and we are getting the back winds

JESSE - 9-2-2009 at 02:13 AM

3:12 wind picking up, stronger gusts, starting to rain a bit.

Russ - 9-2-2009 at 02:21 AM

What mulege marv said but at 2:15. Now..3:15 dead calm had .4" of rain and high gust of 54mph now 86º ~ 91% hum

oldlady - 9-2-2009 at 05:19 AM

Quite windy in Centenario too, but we are on a bit of a rise. Gotta be a steady 25-30 kts with a real whacker of a gust every minute or so. Much cooler than Russ, I think. (I'm a penguin; only know two temps, with A/C and without..right now it's without.)

aldosalato - 9-2-2009 at 05:29 AM

6.30am La Paz had strong wind till few min ago but now dropped down a bit. Almost no rain the whole night.
I just called Ciudad Constitucion and they had already 3 hours of very strong winds. Electricity is out but phone working. Some rain but much less than other hurricanes.

oxxo - 9-2-2009 at 05:32 AM

6:00am west of San Jose.

That WAS a weird storm, at least at my location. Lots of angry clouds but very little rain, I would guess about an inch. There were wind gusts of maybe 30mph but lots of periods of 10mph. Looking out at the ocean, I would give it a 6 on the Beaufort scale: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaufort_scale

CFE shut off electricity at 7pm last night, something about protecting the grid. It came back on sometime in the middle of the night. Since no fans or AC, we slept with the sliders open and had a pleasant sleep, outside temps in the high 70's.

Absolutely no damage at our location. I can hear traffic out on the 4 lane this morning between San Jose and San Lucas. It is dry this morning with a light, variable breeze. Should be a nice day - hot, humid, and partly sunny.

I'll give a call to Marina de La Paz this morning to see what's up with the boat.

It's now time to start looking at the next one coming down the chute!

HaciendaCerritos - 9-2-2009 at 05:33 AM

Thanks oldlady - sometimes I think I should be more like them. I would have thought that with the storm where it is now, we would be pretty much wind-free, but that's not the case. I guess being out here on the point and open to the Pacific Ocean, we're a little more susceptible to the wind conditions.

I just stepped out back to check on the pool palapa (which survived!!) and there is still a stiff breeze. No big deal, just a comment. It feels good. When the sun comes up we'll take a final tree-down count and start putting them back up.

I'm really glad this thing petered out and thankful that so far, so good on all counts for people on the Pacific Coast of Baja. I know she's not done yet, but looking good from what I can see.

Bajagypsy - 9-2-2009 at 05:36 AM

It sounds like it isn't as bad as everyone first thought, I'm still thinking positive thoughts, and hope that everyone is safe, in the homes.

Anyone else have any other thoughts?

Bajagypsy - 9-2-2009 at 05:40 AM

I'm hoping that everyone in Mulege, is ok, You guys don't deserve another flooding of your homes. My thoughts are with you all.

BULLETIN
HURRICANE JIMENA INTERMEDIATE ADVISORY NUMBER 19A
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL EP132009
500 AM PDT WED SEP 02 2009

AT 500 AM PDT...1200 UTC...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE JIMENA WAS
LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 24.5 NORTH...LONGITUDE 112.1 WEST OR ABOUT
30 MILES...50 KM...SOUTH OF CABO SAN LAZARO MEXICO.

JIMENA IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTH-NORTHWEST NEAR 13 MPH...
20 KM/HR...AND THIS GENERAL MOTION WITH A DECREASE IN FORWARD SPEED
IS EXPECTED OVER THE NEXT 24 TO 36 HOURS. ON THIS COURSE...THE
CORE OF JIMENA WILL BE NEAR OR JUST OFFSHORE THE WEST COAST OF THE
SOUTHERN BAJA CALIFORNIA PENINSULA TODAY...AND NEAR OR OVER THE
CENTRAL BAJA CALIFORNIA PENINSULA ON THURSDAY.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 105 MPH...165 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER
GUSTS. JIMENA IS A CATEGORY TWO HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON
SCALE. WEAKENING IS FORECAST DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS...BUT JIMENA
IS STILL FORECAST TO BE A HURRICANE WHEN IT MOVES INLAND.

HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 50 MILES...85 KM...FROM
THE CENTER...AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO
140 MILES...220 KM.

ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS 970 MB...28.64 INCHES.

JIMENA IS EXPECTED TO PRODUCE TOTAL RAIN ACCUMULATIONS OF 5 TO
10 INCHES OVER THE SOUTHERN HALF OF THE BAJA PENINSULA AND PORTIONS
OF WESTERN MEXICO DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS...WITH POSSIBLE
ISOLATED MAXIMUM AMOUNTS OF 15 INCHES. THESE RAINS COULD PRODUCE
LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODS AND MUD SLIDES.

A DANGEROUS STORM SURGE ALONG WITH LARGE AND DANGEROUS BATTERING
WAVES WILL PRODUCE SIGNIFICANT COASTAL FLOODING ALONG THE BAJA
CALIFORNIA PENINSULA.

...SUMMARY OF 500 AM PDT INFORMATION...
LOCATION...24.5N 112.1W
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS...105 MPH
PRESENT MOVEMENT...NORTH-NORTHWEST OR 340 DEGREES AT 13 MPH
MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE...970 MB

THE NEXT ADVISORY WILL BE ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL
HURRICANE CENTER AT 800 AM PDT.

ibannie - 9-2-2009 at 05:54 AM

OH boy, CNN says that no one lives on the coastlines where Jimena is going ashore and that the only places that are going to really be affected are inland......... well sheesh
Thinking of you all..... stay safe!

BajaNews - 9-2-2009 at 05:55 AM

HURRICANE JIMENA DISCUSSION NUMBER 19
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL EP132009
200 AM PDT WED SEP 02 2009

THE SATELLITE PRESENTATION OF JIMENA APPEARED TO BE DETERIORATING
SIGNIFICANTLY SEVERAL HOURS AGO...BUT RECENTLY A NEW CONVECTIVE
BAND HAS DEVELOPED THAT WRAPS AROUND THE WESTERN SIDE OF THE
CIRCULATION. RECENT TRMM PASSES AT 2340 UTC AND 0612 UTC SUGGEST
THAT A MID-LEVEL CENTER OF CIRCULATION WAS SHED OFF TOWARD THE
NORTHEAST BUT THAT THE LOW-LEVEL CLOUD PATTERN REMAINS LARGELY
SYMMETRIC. DVORAK T-NUMBERS HAVE CONTINUED TO DECREASE...AND AN
AVERAGE OF THE SUBJECTIVE AND OBJECTIVE TECHNIQUES YIELDS AN
INITIAL INTENSITY OF 90 KT.

THE 0612 UTC TRMM OVERPASS INDICATED THAT THE LOW-LEVEL CENTER HAS
MOVED A LITTLE TO THE WEST OF THE PREVIOUS FORECAST TRACK...AND THE
INITIAL MOTION IS ESTIMATED AT 340/11. THE MODEL GUIDANCE IS IN
GOOD AGREEMENT FOR THE NEXT 24 HOURS AND SHOWS THE CENTER OF JIMENA
MOVING NORTH-NORTHWESTWARD VERY NEAR CABO SAN LAZARO. ONLY THE
UKMET IS AN OUTLIER BY SHOWING A MORE SUDDEN NORTHWARD TURN INLAND.
BEYOND 24 HOURS OR SO...THE NORTHWARD MOTION OF JIMENA IS EXPECTED
TO BE IMPEDED BY A MID-LEVEL ANTICYCLONE LOCATED OVER THE
SOUTHWESTERN UNITED STATES. CONSEQUENTLY...THE MODEL ENVELOPE
SHOWS JIMENA SLOWING DOWN CONSIDERABLY BY 36-48 HOURS FOLLOWED BY A
SLOW WESTWARD DRIFT AT DAYS 3 AND 4. THE NEW OFFICIAL FORECAST IS
SLOWED DOWN AND SHIFTED SOUTHWEST FROM THE PREVIOUS TRACK AND NOW
INDICATES A SLOW WESTWARD TURN BEYOND 48 HOURS.

SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURES CONTINUE TO DECREASE AS JIMENA MOVES
NORTH-NORTHWESTWARD PARALLEL TO THE BAJA COAST...AND THE
THERMOCLINE ALONG THAT PART OF THE COAST IS VERY SHALLOW DUE TO
NORMAL COASTAL UPWELLING. COMBINED WITH POSSIBLE LAND
INTERACTION...THIS IS EXPECTED TO CAUSE JIMENA TO CONTINUE TO
WEAKEN OVER THE NEXT 24 HOURS. HOWEVER...THE OFFICIAL FORECAST
STILL SHOWS JIMENA MOVING INLAND AS A HURRICANE. ONCE
INLAND...WESTERLY UPPER-LEVEL WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO STRENGTHEN
CONSIDERABLY...AND JIMENA SHOULD SPIN DOWN TO A TROPICAL DEPRESSION
BY 48 HOURS AND A REMNANT LOW BY 72 HOURS. THE NEW FORECAST SHOWS
DISSIPATION BY DAY 5 SINCE MOST OF THE GLOBAL MODEL FIELDS LOSE THE
SURFACE CIRCULATION BY THEN.

INTERESTS IN THE HURRICANE WARNING AREA ARE ADVISED THAT STRONG
WINDS WILL PRECEDE THE ARRIVAL OF THE CENTER BY SEVERAL HOURS...SO
PREPARATIONS NEED TO BE COMPLETED VERY SOON.

INITIAL 02/0900Z 23.9N 111.9W 90 KT
12HR VT 02/1800Z 25.3N 112.5W 80 KT

It Look like the east coast will miss the main storm but look at San Ignacio

HaciendaCerritos - 9-2-2009 at 06:34 AM

For those of you who wondered about the Beach club and their generator and diesel fouling the water: Looks like that area made it above ground.

Our Courtyard came through with just debris.

We still have some angry clouds hanging out in the distance and a good breeze going. I'm proud of the Palapa - Yea, it made it!

shari - 9-2-2009 at 06:43 AM

buenos dias todos...I am so happy for all of you down south who escaped danger and losses....hurray! We currently have wind about 15 knots from the southeast(I had to get up and take the tent down but managed a pretty good sleep last night in it)...very cool clouds everywhere...some blue sky peeking through...rained a few drops last night....only problem is that if it goes inland and swings back on us, the wind and rain will come from the opposite direction....which means all our nicely boarded up windows will be on the wrong side and all our unsecured windows will be exposed...dang.
We are still tying roofs and garages down today just in case.

rbwrivers - 9-2-2009 at 06:50 AM

Buenos dias, Shari. I'll be checking in when I can today. Thanks for keeping us posted and for all you've done to help us.

shari - 9-2-2009 at 06:55 AM

buenos dias todos...I am so happy the south enders didnt suffer much damage or losses...except some serious anxiety perhaps.

This morning we have 15 knots of wind from the southeast and stunning clouds with blue sky peeking through.
Only problem might be that if Jimena goes in and comes out to sea here...all our nicely boarded windows will be on the wrong side to help stem the rain and the uncovered windows will be exposed....sheesh.

We'll see what happens but sure am glad she's weakening, wobbling and stalling...she hasnt dropped all her rain yet though and hopefully doesnt stall over mulege for long.

Kevin is looking forward to kayaking down Rio Benito Juarez at sunset!

have a great day all.

bajajudy - 9-2-2009 at 06:59 AM

Cloudy, a nice breeze and....oh no, here comes the sun....sauna time.
We got very little rain, very little wind. BUT we were ready as you always have to be. Now we have to live with our storm boards until Oct.
oldlady, I am with you....right now without but, with that sun peeking through, will be with very soon!

akbear - 9-2-2009 at 07:00 AM

Hola Nomads, Everything Ok here in Buena Vista, just some water run off & ruts.

Any road reports on Hiway 1 north or south ? I live near the hiway here & have not seen a simi truck since yesterday about 4pm. No fuel tankers, buses or beer trucks.

Hope everyone has a safe time as the storm makes it's way north !

shari - 9-2-2009 at 07:00 AM

CNN just reported that it just made land fall at Santa Margarita

shari - 9-2-2009 at 07:27 AM

jeepers...she's an unpredictable woman all right....the models looks like drunks arguing in a bar....
the salt works in GN get trashed and they lose a bunch of pesos...all the roads turn to mush and the evaporation ponds are ruined with fresh water. I'm sure they have been scraping up salt like mad the last few days to get the crop in....The danger there is if the dykes overflow, break and let very nasty naturally occuring heavy metals into the lagoon...hopefull the sea turtles arent feeding there this time of year as they are the victims of poisening when this happens...hundreds die or toxic shock...ooops....maybe Munoz can report them.

Hurricane Jimena swirls past southern Baja resorts
By MARK STEVENSON (AP) – 1 hour ago

LOS CABOS, Mexico — Hurricane Jimena pounded the middle of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula on Wednesday after lashing the Los Cabos resort region with driving rains and thundering surf.

Further up Baja's west coast, Juan Arce Marron said he was prepared for the hurricane to roll into his small campground in the Bahia Asuncion fishing village later in the day.

"We're starting to feel the wind this morning," he said, "but we're prepared for a bigger hit this afternoon."

Marron said windows were nailed shut, doors were locked and boats already up on land. More importantly, he said his family had stocked days of food and water, because dirt roads in the region, which is in the heart of the massive Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve, tend to wash out in large storms.
