Happily tooling along the toll road just south of Rosarito Beach and we come upon one of those wonderful 'checkpoints'
They got our box of oranges, box of grapefruit, big bag of apples and some bunches of bananas.
So, what if we had bought that stuff at Gigante in TJ?
Anyway, beware, it is a quick and efficient extraction.
Also, while we were getting our visas at the border one guy started poking around in the back of my pickup, spotted a Sunkist box that we were
carrying utensils in, made me rip the side off the box to prove no fruit.

Enforcement of the laws in Baja is arbitrary and capricious. but it always has been. The only difference in the old days was that you simply paid
some Mordida and got to keep your stuff. Now, that's not as likely, although every once in awhile I'm pleasantly surprised to come across a corrupt

If you buy your fruit in the local store just keep the receipt and show it to the people at the checkpoint . If you bring fruit from the U.S it will

I thought these checkpoints were originally set up because of a fruit fly problem in Tijuana. So are you saying they're permanent? They announced

Not necessarily. If you tell them you are going to Ensenada or points further south they will confiscate. They don't want you transporting certain
fruits out of the TJ/Rosarito area, period.
I had an argument with them last week. Bought fruit in TJ and they wanted to take it. I told them NO WAY. After determining that it was going to my
restaurant near Puerto Nuevo they reluctantly let me go.

Conclusion:
Just don't be a visitor bringing fruit.....
by the by, they never asked if we had guns or drugs, just the dreaded fruit salad...

All the inspections on the Mex 3 from Tecate to Ensenada are for northbound traffic only.
