Hi,
We exchanged money last night in Mexicali. We used a new place out of convenience. It was the first time we’ve been asked for ID. They took a copy
of it. Is that normal?
Thanks,
Jennifer

Depends on the amount. If changing a large amount, they ask for ID and make a copy. If asking for smaller amount, they dont want ID info. What
amount triggers ID check? Dunno.
I think the money changers dont want to run afoul of money laundering laws.

That must have been it. We changed a larger amount than usual. Thanks for responding! It was in the back of my mind all morning…sounds like I was
worried about nothing.

Last time I used Cambio in Mexicali, I felt out of place. Mexicans were all withdrawing from the ATMs, I understand they are allowed to open US
account if living near the border. They did ask for ID when I wanted to change $US 900.

Is Mexicali better than the Calexico ones?

My bad, I meant Calexico cambios just before Mexicali crossing. Mexicali ones were actually worse, lower rates. Mexicans in Calexico were getting
USD from ATMs, didn't use cambios.
