FMM/Canje question

digcolnagos - 10-6-2024 at 08:11 PM

I have a temporary residency visa and crossed into Mexico today at Mexicali. But, I didn't visit the immigration office and get an FMM or anything else showing when I entered the country--just went with the flow and drove in after the inspector said I was good to go. Now, I realize I should have gotten an FMM or something else documenting when I entered the country.

I'm in San Felipe now. If I go back to the border tomorrow, can I get the FMM so that the canje process can proceed?

You say you have a temporary visa, but I think you mean you have temporary residency pre-approval from a Mexican consulate and need to complete the process at INM in Mexico?

If that's the case, then yes, you should go back and get the proper paperwork. INM in Mexico will want to see proof that it hasn't been more than 30 days from when you entered Mexico until you present yourself at their office to complete the temp. residency. Make sure they mark CANJE on the FMM, not tourist, or you'll have to start the whole temp. residency application process over again in the US.

Thanks. Yes, it's the pre-approval. Cross fingers, I won't have trouble getting it, or finding the INM office at Mexicali East, where I entered.

UPDATE: Returned to border, easy-peasey. Parked a bit less than a kilometer away and walked in. The INM office was deserted. Not even anyone at the counter for several minutes after I arrived. Took five minutes and away I went with what I needed.
