Planning trip - lots of questions

aletarw - 4-23-2005 at 05:08 PM

My husband and I are planning our trip to Baja. We are planning on visiting Loreto, LaPaz, Todos Santos, and Cabo.

We wanted to fly into Loreto and fly out of Cabo, but that appears to be too expensive. So, we are flying into and out of Cabo. Current proposed itinery is

Thu 6/30 Fly in to Cabo (3pm) (2 nights)

Sat 7/2 Todos Santos (2 hrs drive) (2 nights)

Mon 7/4 La Paz (2 hrs drive) (2 nights)

Wed 7/6 Loreto (all day drive) (4 hrs) (3 nights)

Sat 7/9 LaPaz (2 night)

Sun 7/11 Depart Cabo airport

Questions:
Does this make any sense?
Do we need to make hotel reservations at that time of year?
Can you suggest any hotels that are moderately priced?
How long does it take to drive from Lapaz to Todos?
How long does it take to drive from LaPaz to Loreto?
Are police vigilant about speeds on highways?
Can you suggest real estate agents in Loreto and Todos Santos and Cabo?

Thanks,
Aleta

Figure on 4 1/2 to 5 hours drive time from La Paz to Loreto, depending on your driving style.

Yes, it makes sense; it sounds like a winner of a trip. I think you'll probably be fine arranging accommodations as you go. You'll probably want to have your car rental situation in order sooner than later.

It sounds good, but you should make reservations or be VERY flexible about where you stay. We are in those area's every year at that time. Sometimes there is a fishing tournament in Loreto or La Paz and rooms get scarce. It's better to plan ahead. Since you are flying into Los Cabos, rent your car at the airport, it is the easiest and the cheapest way to go. Don't forget to get insurance on the rental car. It's illegal to drive without it. When in Cabo, we stay at Mar de Cortez or The Hacienda. Both more like what Cabo used to be like. Have a great trip...

If you haven't been to Baja before, Cabo is a great way to acclimate yourself to Mexico. We loved staying at the Bungalows in Cabo. Read some of the reviews at tripadvisor.com. The family that runs the Bungalows, Estella and her son Eric, will help you feel very welcome. They're also good for objective advice. Of course there's the breakfasts which are a whole other topic.

Not knowing where you are coming in from....The trip can actaully be made at almost the same cost flying in or out of Loreto and in or out of Cabo. Are you aware the generally speaking it is often cheaper to fly in/out of La Paz than Cabo? Very comfortable 2 hours from La Paz to Todos Santos. If you are set on your trip do make reservations. If you want to wing it, your best odds are always to arrive earlier in the day. I have yet to fail finding a room if you arrive by 2-3p ish (again, may not be your first location choice).

I would avoid Los Cabos altogether (it's going to be hotter than the "hubs of hell", and unless you like very large expencive exploitive cities , cut over from the north to Todos Santos , you can get cool there,....visit La Paz (for a day or 2), again very hot at that time of year, and spend most of the short time you have in Mulege.....well, not Mulege, at a beach and in the water! It's beautiful and that makes the heat okay (as long as you are close enough to jump in to the Sea!
