Looking for a report on Grey Whales in Ojo de Libre. I am not seeing very many migrating past Encinitas. Thxmtgoat666 - 2-12-2025 at 05:51 PM
I heard this week there are high numbers in mag bay, and reduced numbers in SI and GN -- due to la nina cold water (up to -4? deg C water this year),
so whales went further south this year in search of warmer water.

I went out with Shari's Whale Magic around the end of January, maybe the 31rst, and saw and interacted with several whales.
While heading out from the launch area we saw them spouting and off in the distance we saw them breaching several times, and saw maybe a dozen or more
spyhopping.
Those were all seen at a distance.
Up close the boat I was in 'petted' at least two whales. Everyone in the boat 'petted' a whale and some folks were able to 'pet' them 2 or 3 times.
We also saw two mothers with calfs and they both approached very close to our boat.
We also had a couple of whales swim under our boat.
Per Whale Magic's pre-trip talk they said it was a little early in the season for much, if any, hands on experiences, so we were very fortunate.
Also, the impression I got was the numbers were on the low side of average perhaps but not drastically low numbers. winnebago 2 - 2-13-2025 at 02:43 PM

Does anyone know if the road out to Scammons boat launch and camping is open as usual (given the shift in saltworks ownership) ?Fatboy - 2-14-2025 at 10:48 AM
Not sure what road that is, but our tour van had to check in with the salt works to continue on.
But maybe the road you are referring to goes a different way.....
