La Paz / Direct TV

Tio Rocky - 4-25-2005 at 01:14 PM

I?m sure this question has been asked and answered a hundred time but once more please??

If I purchase a Direct TV System in San Diego and bring it to La Paz will it work?

Thank you.

It will work if you have a dish at least 1 meter larger is better.

So that means the package you buy in the store will not work... were does one get a 1 meter dish?

Rocky--You can buy them here in La Paz 200-400 depending on size.

Thanks,,,

So, just so I got this straight.... I go ahead and buy the equipment in San Diego... last I looked there was a package deal for $150 for dish and three boxes... sign up and then bring it with me... then once there if it doesn't work as is, I replace the small dish with a 1 meter or larger dish...

Is that the plan?

You may rest assured that the small dish will not work in La Paz, unless you are some sort of miracle worker. Also it is, by treaty, illegal to receive the service here. It's my impression that when you buy the equipment you must have a US address. I wouldn't recommend walking into the place and saying you are taking the system to Mexico. Descretion is advised!

Got that covered Tucker... using my sister's address... actually she will be buying it and signing it up...

The only reason I brought this up was that last month I was there and my XM Radio was fading in and out all over town... but I guess houses don't move.... ;D

I need my Nascar fix!

Would be interesting to see how many if any Nomads are into Nascar...

then you need to lie about your address and so on . why not just git the Mexican direct TV system or Sky that is what I have and it works vary good and it is legal.

Bruce, it's my impression that the quality and quantity of the programming is way different. I used to have DTV but it ain't worth the hassle for me. I just watch c-band wildfeeds, that way if I lose interest it hasn't cost me anything.

I just got off a 18 month contract for Sky here in Ensenada?. Programming sucked and cost me 650 pesos a month?

Direct TV here in Ens does not get Fox, FX and NBC which is what is needed for Nascar. Additionally it?s 50% more money per month?

I would like very much to keep it 100% legal?. But?. Does that mean every car that passes into Mexico with XM Radio is illegal? Maybe so? but Ni Modo?

I was trying to get some info on SKY but everything I can find on the web is in spanish. does that mean that all their programming is also in spanish?

I was hoping to find a satellite service that covers Baja Sur and carries the US or Canadian programming in english, my spanish is next to non-existent.

comitan - 4-26-2005 at 05:37 PM

Sky tv is in Spanish, with movies in English spanish subs, good music channels.

I don't have it but lots do and love it, should work where you go in Baja, its mostly English, or French, its Canadian, carries many sports (no NHL last season though) would be very surprised if it did not have NASCAR, and is called StarChoice, uses a small dish, reaches to Manzanillo where I've seen it working beautifully with a small dish as they all are, but likely would be a problem to aquire in your area. Look for a Stateside version coming your way soon, or it might even be available now if you look hard enough in the right place. Beleive me, excellent programming can be had, those satellite signals are raining down on you too in lovely Baja! Just tune in. You may need a Canadian addy if it hasn't yet been marketed in the USA.
