Pompano Fish Report

Hook - 4-28-2005 at 11:43 AM

Are you thinking of relocating to one of these Central American countries after the sale of your Coyote digs?

Thanks for the exploratory. Have you heard about the consistently good yellowfin tuna and marlin fishing out of San Carlos? They are catching them at 25-30 miles on a 180 degree heading out of the bahia mouth. If you do another exploratory, you might head in that general direction from your side; maybe there is good blue water in that direction. Not suggesting you try and drive all the way over, of course.

BTW, what was the color of the water that you saw?

dirtydieseldave - 4-28-2005 at 12:59 PM

Pompoano check out the Marshall Islands the fringe is waiting for you.

Pompano - 4-28-2005 at 03:19 PM

dirtydieseldave....(do you know a brokenlegdave?)......I do know of the Marshall Islands in the southern Pacific. I met a family of singers from there who were camping next to my house in Coyote Bay many years ago...in 1984, I believe..and in particular, a fetching young gal named Lanoeeti who lived on the island of ...Pinguino?? The family was on a US tour the next year and stopped to see me at my home in Fargo, ND. after giving a concert in Minneapolis. That is a nice place in the world, I'm sure...but a little 'hot' for this Norski...and my skin is not as sunproof as those natives. Beautiful ebony bodies with stunning teeth and eyes. Voices like angels.

But you have to wait a bit....I am thinking of a 'remote' getaway. Will post when I find the right one.

On the fringes

latitude26n - 4-28-2005 at 07:47 PM

Pompano, you'll be hard pressed to find a place that rivals your location.

But here's a place still on the fringes, where they speak Spanish with a funny accent and welcome signs are everwhere.

Sometimes you have to double park your panga

But a hand always appears to help you on to the dock

but there's plenty of shade

Pompano - 4-28-2005 at 08:40 PM

Damn, latitude26n, maybe it's just me, but I don't see any photos...if that's what you are sending? All I get is a box with a red X. I appreciate the thought, however.

Okay, got them now...thanks for the U2U. Great pics and how's the fishing? Looks like a place I have been to...near Gulfo de Dulce?

As a wannabe Tico let me quess Quepos CR or north of there.
BAITCAST

Let me guess...do they catch these nearby?

Pompano - 4-29-2005 at 06:30 AM

by the way...can you guess what this fish is? Caught in very warm waters!

Or it could be in sight of this island....?

Pompano - 4-29-2005 at 06:42 AM

latitude26n - 4-29-2005 at 07:02 AM

The photos were only meant to spark the desire to go searching-
something I'm itchin' to do myself right now.

The location in the photos is still way off the radar for most people, and to keep it on the fringes we'll answer
"oh yeah it's Costa Rica", like we always do.
If anybody recognizes it, you probably love it as much as we do. So please smile and play along.

I haven't heard of the fish in your photo being caught on a regualr basis Pompano. There aren't as many big rivermouths along this stretch of coast and climatic conditions are a little different.

have fun

Not what it used to be

Bajalero - 4-29-2005 at 07:57 AM

Pompano:

I think were out of here too. The wave is upon us and the whole reason for going to baja in the first place is rapidly disintigrating. There is no getting away from it all anymore.
We go out onto the back roads and boonies and run into everything and everyone you can imagine- numerous other "explorers" smugglers and lately the ever present military. The peace and quite and solitude is gone along with the placid innocence of a wonderful people. Oh , did I mention that the fishing is NOTHING like it used to be. Yep , Viva Baja

Place in Chivato is for sale. Wife and I are looking to roam costa rica for a look around. Hear there's an ample supply of good cigars in C.A.

Bocas and beyond

latitude26n - 4-29-2005 at 08:35 AM

I'd be curious to hear what you thought of Bocas del Toro if you get there Pompano. There's been such a huge real estate push for that area over the past couple of years I wonder if it's still enough of a "fringe" location. But if you go there and it's a winner, please make something up if you give a report online!

I asked my Dad what his favorite place was when he sailed from Cali. to Isla Mujeres (via the Panama Canal) and without hesitation he said it was the islands off Panama on the Pacific side .

A few piratas, but they keep out the riff-raff !

backninedan - 4-29-2005 at 01:03 PM

Im sure we will see an Inner Dolpo chat room any day now.

all you folks complaining about how much much baja has changed obviously dont live in oarnge county,ca.....a place where i'm told as recently as the 60's was almost all oarnge groves is now as chaotic and frenzied a place as one might imagine...try to find a nice out of the way place to unwind or do some exploring, wont happen because where ever you go and whatever you do there will already be some one else there....i do alot of mt.biking and offroad activity and were basically very lucky that there still is places to ride at all due to the fact that every where you look they are building, what was once open space or a forested area is now either a housing development or a strip mall(not joking)...oh and the beach, dont even bother in the summer time because if you can actually find a place to park and a little sand patch not taken you might not be to thrilled to see cops in shorts patrolling the beach handing out tickets to people who play smashball or dig holes in the sand(again, not joking)are you kiddiing,i'll take baja over this madness any day of the week

Where do you think alot of us folks grew up?

You'll know them in Baja as people who are always complaining of neck pain- from looking over their shoulder to see if it (the big orange) is following them.

Pompano - 4-29-2005 at 07:35 PM

eetdrt88... I couldn't agree more. Although I have never been a fan of anywhere within 200 miles of Orange County, I once stopped at a beach to let my well-behaved and trained Lab out to romp, pee, and take a dump on the beach. I was right there with my pooper scooper and baggie to pick up the land mines. Well, that didn't stop the cute young cop in the shorts from giving me a $200 ticket for letting my dog run loose on the beach..she had to have been all of 15 feet from me for the entire 10 minutes we were there. I told him in Norwegian where to shove that ticket...I think he got my meaning! Anyway, I will never get another ticket like that, because I never have re-visited that area and never will in this lifetime.

As crowded as Baja has become, it's light years away from Orange County...the place where Mother Nature inserts the suppositories. I feel your pain.

hey pompano,

eetdrt88 - 4-29-2005 at 09:11 PM

i'm on my way,i'll be there in about 10 minutes and guess what....when i get there i'm never goin' back:lol::lol::lol:no not really but trust me when I say that i go to sleep every night dreaming of getting down to where you are(and surrounding areas);D

Well, here's a photo to go to sleep by....

When was the photo taken? This year?

YFT would NOT be a good sign at this point in the game!
It would indicate a poor dorado season.

No YFT till late July please!!!!

Pam,

Can you explain these statements, please?

What are the migration patterns of YFT and dorado during a 'normal' year versus a year when YFT appear early?

If the dorado don't show up in good numbers this summer does that mean it will be a good YFT year instead?

I guess this is all related to the flow of warm currents but I would like to know more about it.

Thanks

elgatoloco - 5-5-2005 at 03:37 PM

Pompano, thanks for the report.

You are a lucky guy.

YFT question for Pam

Skipjack Joe - 5-9-2005 at 09:55 PM

For anyone interested in that question regarding why early YFT appearance in sea of cortez could lead to a weak dorado summer. I got this U2U from her.

You probably didn't notice it.

Hi there-

sorry I just got this now. I'm not on the board very much, only when I have some free time which is rare, but I tend to shoot of my mouth which may not be a good thing...

in 1998 Loreto had lots and lots of YFT due to La Nina wether patterns that followed the last strong el nino in 1997. The water was extremely cold so we had the YFT come in nice and close and there were lots of great quality fish.

Unfortunately the commercial fishermen took everything! How could I report factory boats with spotter planes and purse seines taking absolutely everything. After they took those fish, there was nothing to go for.

Yes we had yellowtail and bottom fishing that we'd notmally expect in January instead of July but no dorado or billfish what we normally expect. It was simply the worst year to be in business, clients took the bad fishing out on me and they went home with empty cooler chests.

The poor gy that makes lead weights usually is off in the dead heat of summer, but he was cranking away trying his best to keep up with avery high demand for his product. As a result it was very difficult to get lead weights to fish the bottom so fishing was poor due to inability to properly fish for what was actually there.

Bottom fishing is miserable in the heat of our summers too.

So I hope we don't see any YFT in the near future.

Hope that explaination helps.

Pam

Thanks

I don't know... On the another hand a good YFT year wouldn't be bad either.

YFT-

flyfishinPam - 5-13-2005 at 12:08 PM

well 1998 wouldn't have been such a bad year if we had a better chance at getting those YFT that were here. But the commercials were to blame for taking everything. Despite reports by pangueros to authorities those commercial boats kept fishing and taking and nothing happend. In early July of 1998 the YFT were gone. We had another significant school of 60 pound class YFT later that summer in the month of August. The commercials took those too!

Yellow Fin y Dorado

LaTijereta - 5-13-2005 at 03:02 PM

Pam,
I remember that 1998 season, and comercial boats that wiped out those 6-7 schools of tuna:fire:

But go back to the early 80s, and Loreto always had a healthy mix of Dorado and Tuna durning the summer months. I remember try to decide to go south for tuna, or out for Dorado. The old Mission Hotel used to have a Dorado/ Yellow Fin tournament in July each year.

Let's just hope for the fish..without the comercial boats:yes:

1983

Skipjack Joe - 5-15-2005 at 05:47 AM

I caught my first yellowfin that year... and second ... and third ... and fourth... and lots more.

It was my first time on a Tony Reyes trip (July). The tuna were thick in the BOLA channel and we caught them all around the Midriff islands.

Later on, in October, I drove in to San Francisquito through Arco and the tuna were still there and I fished for them from a tin boat.

If I,m not to mistaken you wrote a trip report about that trip on the old Amigos board, that was one of the  funnyest things I have read on these boards.
Your description of the trip out of there on the hill was hilarious.

Yes, that's the one to San Francisquito.

It sort of reminded me of your experience conquering "The Three Sisters" a bit, on the way to Gonzaga.

I guess if you've experienced it then these stories click in a personal way, otherwise - it's just amusing.

You gotta try, baitcast. I, too, wouldn't buy that color a few years ago when Gene recommended it. But, the guys at the Jigstop have a boxes of extra pink ones laying around because it outsells all the other colors put together, verdad.

Besides, they troll down 25 feet and who knows what color they appear to the fish down there. I think you lose your red color in the top 10 feet of the water column.

Like most guys I just experiment with something lures. If it works then it becomes a keeper.

Best colors for dorado proved to be green/yellow or mexican flag. I found the feathers worked better than plastic ones.

Wait till you see my new boat launch wheels this summer. They look like something from our space program. Speaking of that ... gotta go downstairs and put the final touches on the work.

The irony, it turns out, was that the people from "Amigos de baja" were not amigos.
