California's El Camino Real went to San Diego and on to Monterey and the San Francisco Bay area.
The Jesuits were heading to the Colorado River with it but that all changed after the Franciscans replaced them in 1768 and the King of Spain learned the Russians and British had eyes on the Upper California coast. An expedition to establish missions at San Diego and Monterey was ordered and began in 1769.
