My father taught me to see the beauty of fish when I was real small. He thought they were all beautiful ... especially wet and glistening just out of
the water.
The pompano gets my vote for being one of the 2 most beautiful fish in the Cortez (I don't dive much). I never get tired of admiring these things.
Those long elegant fins. There's almost a feminine quality to this fish.
Unfortunately, for a long time I rarely got to see them up close. Sometimes I would encounter huge schools of these fish at the east cape. The surface
would be yellow with fins. They didn't seem to be traveling anywhere, just suspended in massive groups. We would cast everything we had at them -
Krocodiles, kastmasters, plastics, even flies - not a bite.
A couple of years ago I finally came up with the solution - squid. We would buy a pound of squid and cut it up in 1 inch squares. Every minute or so I
would toss a piece or two and watch it through the polaroids slowly sink and drift. Pretty soon they started showing up. You could see them knifing
through the clear water below. Drop a baited below and you're in business. I let 'em all go. Never had the heart to eat one of these beauties.backninedan - 4-30-2005 at 11:05 AM

Another picture of a pompano, this one with different lighting. It's hard to argue with the beauty of these fish. These fish are also great on light
tackle. The one Alex is holding is really a better size to catch.

Yeah, our kids are lucky to being exposed to Baja so early, but I think we are the lucky ones. I've traveled and introduced many to baja over the
years but none of it has been as much fun as with my kid.
When we stop at the restaurants and tiendas the Mexicans look at us thinking about what he's doing without mom and finally ask:
Es tu companero, no?
I guess that best sums up our relationship on these trips. He's my companero.
Looks like Cody knows her way around fishing. That's a very respectable yellowtail she's got there. She must have had her hands full bringing that in.

Cody very much knows her way around Baja, she and Brendan (my 11yr. old) have been Baja Buddies for about 4yrs. now.....They have spend many a happy
day tide-pooling and exploring. We sure missed her last summer, she and my 5yr. old Grand-daughter would have enjoyed each other.
One of the best parts of Baja is watching our kids explore, learn and love Baja the way we do, and the greatest thing we can do is teach them to
appreciate the beautiful land and sea so it will be there for their kids.

The other fish I never grow tired of admiring are baby roosterfish. Very elegant. The subtle colors in the dorsal fin, a bluish green that the camera
doesn't do justice to, is what I like best. That raised dorsal fin gives them a curious, alert expression. Large roosterfish lose this amiable
expression, they look like thugs.
I've never learned to catch roosterfish consistently. They're always an incidental catch for me.
