bajaruby - 5-3-2005 at 04:15 PM

Hello anyone with any knowlege,
Will be leaveing Jackson, ca. on the 12th of May to meet Cydarough in Julian, at 3 A.M from here. I want to avoid as much traffic as I can. Will be comming down hwy- 99. Hope to meet up at maybe 10 .A. M. I will be comming by myself and my husband is worried about me. I really don't want to come down I-5, had some bad experiences. Was told to take Mohave turn off and head toward to Barstow. But I think that is WAY out of my way. HELP PLEASE!
I hope that some off the nomads will be in the area, as I would REALLY like to meet some of you.:?::?::?:
:yes:I'm comming to Baja, and I can just taste those tacos now:bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce:

NICE PLACE...

Take the 15 south to the 78 then west to Julian
Nice drive thru the hills

Get a CA map or use MapQuest online...

Here is how I would go (I did live in Fresno a couple years): 99 south and at Bakersfield head east to Mojave then on east to Hwy. 395 and then go south on 395 to join I-15... which you take to Escondido...

Use Hwy. 78 east from Escondido, or quicker continue on I-15 to the south side of Escondido and take the signed exit for the Wild Animal Park (Via Rancho Parkway) and head east, past the mall entrance and follow signs to Wild Animal Park (a right turn is made before San Pasqual High School, not far from the mall)...

Pass the Wild Animal Park entrance and continue on 78 up the mountain to Ramona. A left turn is made in Ramona for Julian (still Hwy. 78)... and continue higher into San Diego's back country! Julian is about 5,000 feet, in the pines... A fun place!

what is wrong with I 5? it seems to be the fastest way.

David K - 5-3-2005 at 04:39 PM

I-5 goes through L.A. (!):O:O:(

elgatoloco - 5-3-2005 at 05:13 PM

528.79 miles
8 hours 44 minutes

Going the back way will be more scenic and probaly take longer.

:no::no::no::no: L.A. is the slowest part of the whole trip

99-58-395-15 is the only way to go!

I can't advise you on how to get through LA, but I live in Ramona and I tell eveyone to ignore the signs to take 78 to Ramona. Most people get lost going those two routes through Escondido...

Exit further south I-15 at Poway Rd/Rancho Penasquitos Turn East/left. Go straight through town and up the hill. Poway Road dead-ends at Hwy 67. Turn left. That road will take you all the way to Julian.

It might be a few miles longer but it's a no-brainer and the absolute easiest way to get to Julian from the freeway. Hwy 67 (Main Street - Ramona) turns into Hwy 78 in the middle of town and continues to Julian.

Have some apple pie for me.

Just hit 15 south, take 79 east at Pechanga Casino sp. head east. If you do the all the way to 78 in the morning its a parking lot. I mean moving so stop and go no fun. Take 79 head east stay on 79 aprox 57 miles, until Santa Ysabel go left, at the stop.road T's, go to town park call from liquior store or apple alley. LOL go to the Chamber tell Chris or Nancy you need to call. Hugs drive safe. No problem finding any of above town is two blocks long.

IF you mean 'do all the way to Poway Road', following jeans route (staying on I-15 to Poway Road).. Yes, that is a nightmare, sometimes until 10 am, from Escondido to San Diego on I-15! Your idea of using 79 from Temecula (Pechanga Indian Res.) into the moutains (past Warner Springs) is unique and sound like a winner to me!

Cyndarouh - 5-4-2005 at 06:50 AM

David, Traffic out of Temecula going south in the morning is stop and go. Can take for ever to get to Escondido. 79 is a nice country road. We always come home that way from Bear Mountain. Not any shorter but less traffic in the morning. Threw the rez's partrolled by radar heavy some days. I set curse and just cool it on the straights.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the feed back. I just can't waite to get to Baja. It's been almost 6 mo. GOT TO GOOOOO:bounce::bounce::bounce::tumble::tumble::tumble:

Here's the route I would take

Hook - 5-10-2005 at 02:21 PM

I would avoid 79 as, on the whole, it is more winding than the route I am about to recommend. And 79 has seen an increase in signals due to all the development west of Dripping Springs.

Take I-15 to 76 and head east. When it deadends at 79, turn right. Now, stop at Dudley's bakery in San Ysabel and buy a dozen chocolate croissants, IF THEY HAVE ANY LEFT!. On weekends they sell-out and you will know why when you taste one. Seal them in a large ziploc and they will last well into your Baja trip. Maybe even work as a mordida; they are THAT good. Now proceed up hwy 78 into Julian.

There are long stretches of 76 that you can average 50-60 mph. Virtually the entire area from Pauma Valley to San Ysabel is like this, except for one small grade past the Valley Center cutoff that is over in 5 minutes.
