In past years, I have traveled through most of these States, via public transportation, without any serious problems. However, I was traveling very
light, carrying just a day pack. Other than the cash I had, the total value of all my gear was under $100US. I wasn't much of a target for robbery.
I cancelled my Baja hiking plans because I don't fancy being in remote areas where cartels are reported to be operating, carrying $2,000US worth of
trekking gear.

Sounds like business as usual? I don't spend time near Mexicali, and since I just pass through, I prefer that short drive over passing through
Southern CA and Tijuana/Ensenada.
I usually head south from Northern CA by crossing over to Nevada and explore some of that route on my way to Baja.
