menudo

menudo is a small word that means a lot of things. The expression used in today's Spanish Dictionary word of the day was "a menudo", which was translated to "often." In Mexico, we know that menudo is a hearty stew made with tripe, often touted as a hangover cure. In Puerto Rico, it means "small change," and the inspiration behind the name of the PR boy band that gave the world Ricky Martin.

Has anyone heard any other usages - slang or otherwise?

La entrada en el diccionario de la RAE, es interesante.

También existe "menudencia", término relacionado. ;)

@lencho - thanks for weighing in! Indeed, the Academy adds many shades of meaning I've never heard before, including a small or slight person.

I tried it once... and once was enough, LOL! I know there are differences in how it is made or tastes... and it was Antonio, 'Baja Cactus', who took me to his Sunday morning menudo spot. So, it is one of the few (very few) Mexican foods I will pass on. Give me birria, any day!

I think that Menudo is one of the few dishes that is improved by the canning process. A pressure cooker can work wonders with weird ingredients!

I've never tried Menudo myself. If I overindulge to the point of la cruda, the combination of Excedrin and black coffee usually sets me back on the right path.

Ahhhh... well, it is very rubbery. Reminds me a bit like calamari.
