For anyone following the tuna bite out of Puerto Los Cabos, the main areas in our October 18 update are Iman, Gordo Banks and San Luis Bank. Tuna
fishing continues to be excellent, and it remains our main focus when discussing trips with visiting anglers.
Having several areas in the report gives the crew options. The final destination should still depend on the latest information and the conditions on
the day, rather than choosing one bank simply because it produced on a previous outing.
The fishing approach also matters. Smaller tuna are being targeted with sardine chumming, while trolling small skipjack remains the method for larger
fish. There is plenty of skipjack around as well.
We recommend the smaller-tuna option for visitors and anglers getting started. For experienced fishermen who want to concentrate on a larger fish,
discuss that goal with the captain before leaving the marina.
There have been some tuna lost to sharks. The interference is present, but it has not been particularly aggressive in the current update.
Beyond tuna, sailfish and cubera snapper are also part of the local action. Mahi-mahi and the marlin species have been slower, and wahoo have not
appeared in our recent catches.
The bank names are useful, but matching the target to your experience is just as important. That is the conversation we recommend having before your
next day offshore.

I eternally respect the belief behind he thought of catch and release.
Personally, my fish for dinner was always limited to what I could consume that day.
I caught a flounder at Scorpion Bay from my surfboard that barely fit into my frying pan and it was as delicious to consume as any fish I ever caught.
My fellow campers at Pescadero back in the day caught a few Sierra off the beach that came close. They were as tasty a fish an any.
Are there still fish swarms like those around?
I have speared a few fish at my heaven on earth former east cape residence.
Relying on a fish camp close by was always guaranteed to provide a source of fresh seafood and it was only a couple of miles away.
I hope the East Cape sea life is surviving the greed of modern appetites for glory by depicting a hanging fish that rarely survive the catch and
release program that should be mandatory at this point in time.
Commercial interests are always welcomed to join in.
As a prime example of forethought, Juan at Bahia Ascension has provided a way for other fishing cooperatives to have a future.
Bravo to all who support a future that we have enjoyed on a non-commercial basis like mine.
I took what I could consume and nothing more.
What more does anyone need when camping on your own?
Camping on your own may be history these days. I hope not.
Paddling out on my own for an hour before the townies made it out, was always a gift.
I hope those moments of solitude remains a gift to those who took over.
Lastly, this seasons untypical number of SE swells is a gift I hope the current locals can appreciate.
