Looks like Amazon Leo is coming very soon. Will be great to have an alternative to Starlink, especially after Musk went all political, and joined the
dark side.
Anybody tried the Leo beta units yet? JDCanuck - 10-20-2026 at 05:56 PM
Apparently not available til 2028, but definitely good to have competing options to choose from again.JZ - 10-20-2026 at 06:32 PM
Have Starlink on my truck. It's a mini we can take out of it's case and take on international trips.
LEO satellite systems are incredible. JDCanuck - 10-20-2026 at 07:18 PM
From the little bit I read about LEO is it's designed for standard smart cell phones. Is it already available in Internet form? I do know Starlink
when we first got it was a huge improvement over Hughesnet which tended to fall off line a lot and was far slower(and more expensive as well)pauldavidmena - 10-21-2026 at 04:47 AM
When I joined my erstwhile employer Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the research fleet relied primarily upon Iridium satellites, late 80s technology that never quite scaled to
meet the demands of image and audio data collected by marine instruments. Starlink, and later Starshield, changed the game. Right now the R/V Atlantis is sending nearly real-time data to the WHOI data center from the West Galapagos Ridge.
Of course the funding picture for Science has dramatically altered the research landscape, and while this hasn't yet included the fleet's
communications technology, the timing of Amazon's LEO offering could be fortuitous.
Leo......low earth orbit?

JZ, what do you pay for your hardware and monthly service? I would look it up, but I don't want to start another flood of advertising.lencho - 10-21-2026 at 11:39 AM
