extrañar

Today's Spanish word of the day from SpanishDictionary.com was extraño, translated to "strange." Easy enough. Then I remembered the verb extrañar translated to "miss," as in "Mi hijo extraña mucho a sus perro." or "My son misses his dog very much." However the verb extrañar is also translated to "surprise," with the reflexive extrañarse becoming "to be surprised."

Suffice to say, these meanings are very different. How does one tell which is being used? Is it mostly by context?

As is the case in many situations.

Consider "tu", "tú", "two", "to", "too".
