Here at Daliken Sportfishing in San José del Cabo, the current tuna fishing gives us two useful approaches to discuss with anglers: sardine chumming
for the smaller fish and trolling small skipjack when a larger tuna is the priority.
Tuna fishing continues to be excellent. The usual fish are around 20–40 pounds, with occasional tuna in the 60–80-pound range. For the regular
bite, sardines are the starting point. Let the crew manage the chum and explain how your bait should be presented alongside it.
For someone learning this style of fishing, paying attention to the bait presentation is a good place to put the effort. Ask questions before the
action starts, especially about handling the reel and following the crew’s instructions once a fish is hooked.
Small skipjack trolling is a different plan. It offers a chance at tuna over 100 pounds and makes sense for anglers who specifically want to pursue
that larger-fish opportunity. The tackle should reflect that goal, with a heavier conventional outfit, adequate line capacity and a rig selected by
the captain.
It is not simply a matter of choosing a reel based on the weight of the fish you hope to catch. The rod, line, leader, drag and bait presentation need
to work together. If you are traveling with your own equipment, discuss it with the crew before the trip.
There are other species to consider too. Wahoo and sailfish are beginning to show, and ballyhoo is an option for both with species-specific rigging.
Dorado remain scarce, while shore fishing has been slow.
Offshore is our current recommendation, subject to weather and sea conditions. For the tuna portion of the trip, the main decision is straightforward:
concentrate on the regular sardine bite, or prepare for a larger-fish attempt with small skipjack.
