3 hour border wait.....

surfer jim - 5-8-2005 at 10:20 AM

Just got home today at 6 AM and tried to sleep...but can't so I will write....about the border crossing early this morning...northbound at TJ.....usual toll road approach and then make the final long sweeping turn as you get to the actual border road where the vendors await....we get to just about the overpass area (about a mile ? away) and it is stopped....looks like a Sunday afternoon but it is 1:30 AM Sunday morning.....and not moving....finally get through at 4:30 AM.....(was expecting 5 minutes max wait at this time)....8 lanes open...but sometime it would take 5 minutes for a car to clear .....this was the worst wait time I have ever had in 30 years....

OUCH!

Whenever I try to cross on Sunday it is very early. Just like you did. I always breeze right through. Like a friend of mine said though, " The border line is a crap shoot, no matter what time".

A tip for people who do try to sneak through there early like us, at a time when all the lanes are not open. The lanes open from the inside ones to the outside ones. If they open any new ones while you are in line, it is best to be on the outside.

Went to US Friday mid day and used Calexico East crossing. 1 hr 10 min wait and some lanes taking a long time per car. My thoughts were along the line of "why does customs want to discourage crossing??" Only 4 of 8 lanes open. There was nothing unusual about Friday to call for increased crossings that I know of. The agent I got asked usual questions about where I was coming from and going and then citizenship of me and my wife. Then slowly walked to the rear to get license no. (AZ doesn't use front plates", Came back and chatted about the weather in San Felipe vs Calexico in the past few days. Then entered lic. no. in computer - another 10 seconds and "Have a good trip" ???????????????

Driving along on Second st. in Calexico saw the line for the downtown border and lines didn't look as long as the one I had been in and this crossing usually has 10 lanes open> ???

surf was so-so this trip...surfed a little Thursday...water very cold...4/3 suit/hood/booties.....hands stinging......waves 3-4 with sets of head high every 20+ minutes.....but too cold/windy to wait for those waves.....

Friday was supposed to improve but it got smaller and lots more wind...never went out.....

same for saturday....held knee-waist high...with some sets bigger but long wait.....never got in water......also early wind....

for surf trip rates a C- to D+.....was better in Huntington beach.....and a LOT warmer.....

Last Sunday crossed Tecate at 2:45 PM took 50 mins. This Sunday yesterday crossed at 6:42 PM took 25 mins.

shoulda stayed home, jim. head high at the beach. dropped a little yesterday (tides, maybe) and every 12-13 minutes today was solid head high.

I was lucky then. On Thursday at 6pm I had five cars in front of me at TJ/San Ysidro northbound. Five minutes. The traffic coming southbound into Mexico was backed-up past the Hwy 5-805 interchange.

Consider this---the delays at the border should be talked up by all---it is one of the most important reasons that we might look forward to a little slower growth in this Paradise. Think about that as you fume as you wait in those lines that protect Baja.

jim, we allmost allways cross at 4am sundays and never have much of a wait. too bad it was that long. many windsurfers at san carlos?

a week ago I came across at Tecate with only 15 minute wait - but had to find the entrance road. Where are the entrance roads finally going to end up going North?

Border Wait

MrBillM - 5-9-2005 at 07:48 PM

In mid-April we returned to the U.S. via the Garita Oriente in Mexicali. The wait was about 25 min at 2 pm, but after clearing us the female Customs Officer stood there and just visited with us, talking about boredom with her job, retirement, etc, etc, etc for about ten minutes, totally unconcerned with the cars waiting behind us. A pleasant conversation, but I couldn't help wonder how often that happens.
