thanks, David--nice stuff

BajaVida - 5-19-2005 at 08:28 AM

all I need now is San Ignacio (and the Laguna)

San Borja would be nice too;)

Dave - 5-19-2005 at 11:04 AM

David, WAY COOL!

now I can think of where I'd rather be rather than where I am

BajaVida - 5-19-2005 at 01:29 PM

Packoderm - 5-19-2005 at 02:09 PM

I have found that all you need is one of those maps, and then you can scroll all around the world if you want. Very cool. You can almost see individual hippies as Haight St. goes into Golden Gate park. I can also see my house.

thekookbuster - 5-19-2005 at 02:31 PM

You would think with this beautiful weather you wouldn't have so much time on yer hands. lol

Frigatebird - 5-19-2005 at 03:52 PM

Anyone know if the archive is being updated regularly with the high resolution photos?

Imagine how big some the files must be. Amazing stuff. Now if I can only get my hands on some of these without going broke.

Updated high res photos + Ozi + GPS + Baja = Heaven

bajajudy - 5-19-2005 at 04:22 PM

Daivd
I would really like to see the estuary in San Jose.
They just broke it through again....dont they know you cant mess with mother nature.
Thanks

Packoderm - 5-19-2005 at 06:07 PM

" Anyone know if the archive is being updated regularly with the high resolution photos?"

The photos for the map are old. It shows cars parked on a parking lot that is currently torn up. It also doesn't show the light rail stations that were built years ago.

Frigatebird - 5-21-2005 at 11:24 AM

Perhaps I should have written "upgraded" photos.

Ken Bondy - 6-6-2005 at 10:02 PM

David these are fantastic. Breathtaking. Thanks so much for doing this.

latitude26n - 6-7-2005 at 04:43 PM

Ah heck. Looks like we left the garage door open again!

Well not quite, but I can see the green of my Palo Verde trees.

Thanks for doing these quick links. I loose my position sometimes when I'm scrolling thru the open desert areas so this is much easier.

David K - 6-8-2005 at 07:33 PM

I have added Puerto Calamajue, Punta Remedios/Bahia Guadalupe, and Santa Rosalia to the list of Gulf side locations from space....

Remember, you can zoom in or out and scroll any direction to see beyond the image I have a link to. This list is just to make your Baja search faster, from a known starting point.

I will be adding more points in the center of the peninsula next, to what I have already started!

green patchz

jide - 6-9-2005 at 09:42 AM

Cool links David!!
I was checking out the punta abreojos link, and I remember driving by old volcanoes in the area and thinking about potential palm canyons there..
I scrolled around the area on google map, and I found a couple green patches.

http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=26.711884,-113.574257&spn...

Can anyone tell me if this green is actually from plants?

The sat. photo of our area (san juanico) doesn't zoom in very much but I can follow familiar landmarks right to where the trees are in our yard. The surrounding landscape is brown or dusty-white so it's easy to pick them out. I don't know if anything else would show up as green in the photos.

Taco de Baja - 6-19-2005 at 10:47 AM

Cool images, David.
If you zoom into the max in El Rosario, you can almost see people walking around the Baja Cactus Pemex! :o

Thanks

WOW, Way cool. Thank you very much

Baja Bernie - 8-18-2005 at 09:00 AM

David is the only guy that I know who says up until 1-3 am just thinking of Baja and how he can dig things like this up to help fellow Baja nuts in their prusuits.

I don't even completely understand this 'stuff' but thanks to it being posted I am learning and enjoying Baja even when I am forced to stay home in my cramped office.

Thanks David--this is what you do best--help your friends.

David K - 8-18-2005 at 08:24 PM

Thanks Bernie... ignore those with sour grapes. Of the dozens of positive replies, his was the only negative, and note the link at the bottom of his post... Baja Nomad continues to grow as the positive here still outways the negative.

Now, do you have a request? La Salina? A rock painted to look like a frog? Heck... As good as these satellite images are I could probably show your van in your driveway with those Baja stickers on back! (don't worry, I won't)

David K - 9-11-2005 at 11:07 AM

Okay amigos, I have added a few more to the Miscl. list. including Mike's Sky Rancho, Meling Ranch, and the observatory. This central region is not available in the highest resolution, but you can make out some structures and the roads.

David K - 9-25-2005 at 10:39 AM

Still adding...
By the way, someone said you can 'tilt' the image and get a 3-D effect... How do you do this, as I don't see an icon to click for the 3-D.. Thanks!

Baja images

BajaRob - 9-25-2005 at 12:54 PM

Thanks David............ especially enjoyed Bahia Santa Maria. Go figure. Hope to see you down our way soon. Rob

David K - 9-25-2005 at 01:20 PM

Rob, are you back there now?

Bahia Santa Maria

[Edited on 10-18-2005 by David K]

BajaRob - 9-25-2005 at 02:01 PM

David................ Not yet, we are still in the other BC. We're headed to Newport 10/4 for some world class cioppino @ you know where. Then to SLC for some family time, then to Branson for some more family time. We will hook up with 8 of our SM neighbors in Las Vegas on 10/19. On 10/21 we will caravan to Bahia Santa Maria picking up more neighbors on the way. It's been a great summer here in the great frozen Pacific Northwest but now it's time to go home. Come see us and we'll crack a couple XXs on the beach.

On a rainy day, flying over Baja with your PC and these satellite images is the next best thing! (a fish taco in L.A. Bay is actually better)...

David K - 11-22-2005 at 11:49 PM

Make good use of them to plan you Baja explorations!

I am using them to help make the El Rosario map... The resolution is so high around that area, I can recognize each building as I drive to it when there... then note what the building is...

David

Baja Bernie - 11-23-2005 at 09:22 AM

Would you plot a trip by 'foot' from around Popolta to Neji and on to Campo then one from Neji to Yuma area.

Yes! I am working on another story and this would sure help.
Think about water as you play with the possible route.
Thanks

wornout - 11-23-2005 at 01:58 PM

Playa Santispac with some www.bajagps.com waypoints AND a geocache waypoint in upper right part of picture (little brick with green circle). Ah, the power of the internet.

Not a problem!
La Ribera

It is also added to the list, just after Los Barriles... Welcome to Baja Nomad!

CurlyGirl - 12-5-2005 at 03:33 PM

That's fantastic--thank you, David!
And thanks for the welcome--I've been lurking for months ;D

I added the Tijuana/ San Ysidro border to the 'Along Hwy. 1' section, per request of a Nomad... here it is, also:

Agua Caliente Hot Spring (off Valle Chico)

David K - 12-27-2005 at 08:47 AM

I had Agua Caliente Canyon listed in the Miscl. Baja Sites section, but I just added a zoom in at the hot spring to the list... Remember you can scroll out from each of these photo maps by holding down the mouse left key... You can also zoom in and out in most cases...

David K - 12-27-2005 at 05:54 PM

De nada my friends!

It really is easy... but you have to know what a place looks like or match up the land with the topo maps...

Remember, I do requests! Where in Baja would you like a quick link to see it from space?

Santa Maria/Mag Bay

Juan del Rio - 12-27-2005 at 07:17 PM

Hey David, can you get a photo of Santa Maria Bay (Mag Bay area?) Thanks!

David K - 12-27-2005 at 07:48 PM

Hmmm... Well, there is a Bahia Santa Marina in the Baja Almanac (note the 'n') at the south end of Mag Bay. Puerto Chale and Puerto Datil are on the shore... Isla Creciente is the barrier island that seperates it from the Pacific...

Here it is: Bahia Santa Marina

woody with a view - 12-28-2005 at 07:13 PM

has anyone fiqured out when these sat/maps were created? are they a year/month/week old?

bajalou - 12-28-2005 at 07:48 PM

If you scroll down to the bottom of the "Layers" in GoogleEarth, you find 4 layers DG Coverage 2005, DG Coverage 2004, DG Coverage 2003 and DG Coverage 2002. If you turn these on one at a time, you can see when they got pictures of various areas - These are the Digital Globe images. - Go to your place and then turn these layers on and see if DG made these images and when. A lot of GoogleEarth images are not Digital Globe images though and I don't know how to get history on them. I can timeline the one of my place by what's in the driveway etc. This is in Google Earth, not Google Maps but suspect both using same satellite data.

:?:

David K - 12-29-2005 at 09:34 AM

A request for San Bartolo was received... it has been added to the 'Along Hwy. 1' section... Unfortunately, there isn't high resolution images in this part of Baja... so a real close zoom in isn't yet possible.

David

Baja Bernie - 1-2-2006 at 12:10 PM

Still waiting for my route.

Popotla page 1 D6 (where the new truck road will come out from Tecate

Neji page 2 M4/5 South and east of Tecate.

Not being a smart ass--you have always know the answers to everything I have asked you in the past and I assumed that you would know these.
Sorry!
I really do not know how much work this is so if it is unreasonable just let me know. To me it seems like you just wave a magic wand and it is there.

David K - 1-3-2006 at 11:22 AM

Okay Bernie, I knew Popotla but not the rest... Let's see how I can help!

Unfortunately, the resolutution is not good beginning just south of Rosarito.
Here is Popotla (not very sharp) from Fox Studios to the point where you can see way south to Cantamar... this is also added to the list 'Along Hwy. 1': Popotla area

Okay, here is a zoom out where you can see Popotla in the lower left corner and the land going inland towards Neji...
Popotla and area northeast, high view

Stand by for more...

Okay, in this view you can see Rodriguez Reservoir in the top left corner... and the land any trail would traverse between the two points... You can easily see Arroyo Las Palmas which is the main 'river' into Rodriguez... Neji is east northeast of Valle las Palmas on Hwy. 3.
Arroyo las Palmas

Here is further along Arroyo las Palmas, the likely route of any trail to Neji...
Arroyo las Palmas II

Here is the area between Valle las Palmas and Canon el Alamo... If you have any place names for this trail, it may help pinpoint the route...
Southeast from Valle las Palmas

Stand by for more...

Las Parras and El Alamo Canyons... west southwest of Neji...
El Alamo Canyon

Best zoom in, but not clear of Neji (?):Neji, south of El Hongo

[Edited on 1-3-2006 by David K]

Thank you David

Baja Bernie - 1-3-2006 at 09:00 PM

Your response jogged my memory and I now remember an old road that winds east and north from Cantamar up toward Rodriguez Dam and Valle de las Palmas.

That will work with some other stuff I have for my new book.
Again, Thanks

David K - 4-22-2006 at 09:00 AM

ANY REQUESTS?

Fantastic David!!!

frizkie - 4-22-2006 at 02:55 PM

Thank you so much for your efforts here !! These shots are awesome.......Great stuff!!

Could you find El Chorro near Agua Caliente for me? And by "Agua Caliente Hot Springs" would you be meaning Santa Rita Hotsprings near San Jorge, or the Hotsprings at El Chorro.

A shot of Canon de la Zorro would be KEWL too

This is what I meant is what I typed: "Agua Caliente Hot Spring (off Valle Chico)". Almost every hot spring in Mexico is called Agua Caliente, so it is important to add some other reference point to the name.

Valle Chico is the valley southwest of San Felipe at the foot of the Sierra San Pedro Martir. The north end of Valle Chico is Diablo Dry Lake and the south end is Arroyo Matomi.

El Chorro is just west of the town of Agua Caliente which is just southwest of Santiago in Baja California Sur.

Santa Rita and San Jorge are just west of Santiago....

I will do my best to add these sites to the list, stay tuned!

Hi Marie-Rose, just scroll up this page and see the post be BajaRescue... He linked the image to Todos Santos just fine... You can zoom in or out and scroll around with your mouse from all the images.

By the way, Sunrise Cafe in Vista has new owners who are keeping things pretty much the same as when you where there.

San Jorge & Agua Caliente (near Santiago)

David K - 4-23-2006 at 09:11 AM

Okay Frizkie, in this image are both arroyos (San Jorge on the top and Agua Caliente on the bottom) where they exit the sierra. On the right, between them, is Mesa Cerralvo.

This is an area without high resolution, so a zoom in to show much more detail isn't happening here. The town of Agua Caliente is near the lower, left edge of the mesa.

San Jorge & Agua Caliente (near Santiago)

I also added Santiago to the list, as it is easy to pinpoint even without high resolution because of the airstrip just west of town and the riverbed curve...

Santiago

frizkie - 4-23-2006 at 11:19 AM

This is so interesting!! :wow:

I am trying to find my little Rancho near El Chorro Hot Springs.

I just bought it a few months ago and it is like the garden of Eden in that area. It is a ten minute walk to the Hotsprings. The locals call my place Rancho Chivarito.

JR would be so proud of me as it is definitely not a "Gringo enclave" Hee!! Hee!! I am the only one in town with blue eyes.:o Giggle!!

David nice stuff a quick question what happened to okies landing was down near isle huerfinos (spell) i think it may be named nachos campo now ?:?:

David K - 6-11-2006 at 10:51 AM

No, Okie Landing (or Okie's Landing) is south of Nacho's El Huerfanito and just south of the Miramar gold and onyx mines.

All that remains of the 1960's fisherman's resort are some cement pads along the rocky little cove and the cave that once was the ice room.

I will post some pictures in a day or two.

Last time we drove by, there was a sign announcing the name Okie's Landing. Perhaps a resort will return?

Russ - 10-1-2006 at 06:55 PM

Or... go to googleearth and down load it FREE. It has been upgraded and you'll spend hours exploring.

Yes, and from each location link you can zoom in or out and scroll off the edge of the posted image and 'fly over' Baja... Follow roads you wondered where they went, etc.

Iflyfish - 11-29-2006 at 03:10 AM

I just went to Ascuncion and looked at the point that I think Shari and Juan are on. If that is the point then you can see how it relates to an island off the point and to the topography inland from them. Very interesting.

Thanks again, I know I will spend a lot of time with these. What a great resource.

Happy that this Thread has been brought up again - I didn't notice it, when sifting through diverse threads last couple months.
Great to see that David has taken his time to provide direct links, for those who can not spend much time on the PC.
I'm a map addict, love to search for places from space. Then go there and see them for REAL.

SO , NOW which bay has Dough been!!!!!!!!
I wan to go there for REAL, with my family!!!!

I just noticed that the photos of L.A. Bay are fairly recent as they show the new gas station and traffic circle that are not much more than a year old...

David K - 1-31-2007 at 11:29 AM

East Cape Region now high resolution!

I was just checking and saw that many more areas of Baja have been upgraded to high resolution on Google's satellite images... I updated San Ignacio and Santiago and added Agua Caliente (near Santiago) and Miraflores to the list 'Along Hwy. 1'...

Tinaja de Yubay------

How much of a walk (how far) is it from the end of the veh. route to the actual "historical" water hole?

It looks like there are several smaller water holes downstream from the "big" one-----true???

Yes Barry... if it has been wet not long before your hike, then there is one big and other small tinajas before the true Yubay... Which you will know by the wild fig growing from the rock cliff to the left of the famous waterhole.

The hike is about 1/2 mile... You park where the road ends in the big sand arroyo... then find the Camino Real shortcut to Yubay by hiking straight across the arroyo from where the road drops into it. Zoom in with Google image and you can see some of that trail, which goes over a rise and drops you into the true Yubay arroyo... there you simply hike upstream.

See my web page from when we hiked in (Mike Humfreville and his son Miguelito, El Camote, Desert Rat, my kids and I)... Debra passed out a few hundred feet short of the water hole (see humorous photo of her with a cell phone and Viva baja sticker): http://vivabaja.com/van1/page5.html with GPS data.

A better collection of photos at Yubay (with more GPS waypoints, incl. the Camino Real) was taken by Neal and Marian Johns at http://vivabaja.com/neal2

GPS DIRECTIONS TO YUBAY (WGS 84)

JCN. hwy.1 & L.A. Bay hwy. N29°02.76' W114°09.17' 0.0 mi.

TURN NORTH onto dirt road N29°04.31' W114°02.41' 7.0 mi.

FORK right (left is Desengaņo, 0.3 mi.) N29°06.84' W114°01.65' 10.0 mi.

JCN. go right (ahead to rock palm hill, 4.2 mi.) N29°09.17' W114°01.40' 12.8 mi.

RIDGE TOP, 4WD only beyond N29°10.19' W113°59.77' 14.8 mi.

END OF ROAD in arroyo/TRAIL is straight across N29°10.29' W113°59.65' 14.9 mi.

TINAJA DE YUBAY N29°10.69' W113°59.26' 15.5 mi.

note: milages are direct, not road miles.

========================================================

Note that the map datum is at WGS84... so enter it at that setting... Since then, I always use NAD27 to match with the Baja Almanac, etc... Plus Neal Johns told me to do it that way!

I used the GPS to give the straight line distances between each point... From the road end in the arroyo to Tinaja de Yubay it was 0.6 mi. (1 km.)... So the actual walking distance would be a bit more, but under a mile.

Okay, one of the newest additions is the mine west of Puertecitos at the end of the long road from Mex. 1... that we hope might be a shortcut across Baja, using Arroyo el Canelo off Matomi.

A toda madre David! How about San roque?? I think this should be a separate lpermanent page on Baja Nomad site so we can always refer to it without looking for this link in the Forum. Way cool and it has helped our visitors find our remote place. Buen trabajo! Te felicito

Yep, lencho, the world is converting to ITRF92. The good news is (from Dr. Will Featherstone):

"The ITRF92 is a more recent datum than the WGS84 datum and is considered to be an improvement upon WGS84. Also, the ITRF92 is internationally recognized and endorsed through the International Association of Geodesy (IAG). In fact, the WGS84 datum was modified in early 1994 and is now coincident with the ITRF92 at the 10cm level (Malays and Slater, 1994). Therefore, for all practical purposes, (WGS84) is fully compatible with (ITRF92) in terms of spheroid and datum."
For those metrically challenged, 10cm is about 4 inches.

You also see an occasional reference to WGS83. This is WGS84 referenced so that is not affected by long term position shifts in tectonic plates. Therefore in your lifetime (unless you live in California :?::( ) it is the same as WGS84.

Also, I have been building a long list of links to photos of the Camino Real from space... they are in posts in the Baja Nomad Historic Interests and Literature Forum... http://forums.bajanomad.com/forumdisplay.php?fid=24

El Camino Real, near Gonzaga Bay: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=22982

El Camino Real, near San Borja: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=23117

El Camino Real, north of Santa Gertrudis: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=23118

El Camino real, Santa Gertrudis to San Ignacio (east route): http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=23433

El Camino Real, San Ignacio to Santa Gertrudis (west route): http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=23468

Thank you, David K! What a labor of love... Or is that your Baja Fever that's making you do that? You must be a Virgo or have a lot of Virgo in your astrological chart...

I understand the convenience of having it near the top of the board... However, if it isn't you can either scroll down the General Baja forum or use Nomad search... 'Baja Locations From Space' by David K

Thank you David K. for the super google Earth links. You are indeed a Super Nomad. These have been a great help to me. Thanks CaboRon

Peloncito - 5-19-2007 at 08:49 PM

Nice work David..... "Google Earth" is great for mapping out our favorite portions of Baja. I actually downloaded Robby Gordon's pre-running course for the 2006 Baja 1000 and followed it down just after the race. Of course, I was just a bit off his and Andy McMillan's pace. Download Google Earth for free from Google's site, its so much fun.

And no, the federal government will not allow Google to update their sat images too often for "reasons of national security".

David K - 5-20-2007 at 09:23 AM

I am anxiously awaiting them to get high resolution in the area between Cataviņa and Gonzaga Bay... Mision Santa Maria area, to see the road, El Camino Real, mission, etc! This is really great country... I am looking forward to next weekend, going there for my third time and Baja Angel's first time!

CaboRon - 6-3-2007 at 03:30 PM

Great site, I wish the resolution were better in Baja Sur....... Keep up the great work. Ron PS:I know you have nothing to do with the photo resolution,,
