Age of constibuters to this board

 Pages:  1

Baja Bernie - 5-20-2005 at 06:06 PM

As the only 'normal' Nomad around I thought it would be fun if everyone would post their age, if you are not afraid, and any other bull pucky that you want the rest of us to know--like how long you have been visiting OR living in Baja.

I'll start--68 years young--had a place in La Salina for over 25 years and just recently sold it (the worst thing I have ever done) so I could be closer to the VA hospital (joking). Still lovin' and wandering to Baja after over 45 years.
I even write poems and other junk about it.

Woops! Lurkers sure are welcome!!

I am now logging 54 years on plant earth.

My Papa brought me to Baja for the first time in 1958.

From that time to date the confusion insued as to if I am Sally, so sez my birth certificate and most gringos. Or is it Sara, as the folks of Mexico have called me every since tha first walk on the beach with Papa Fernandez. You see, Sali gets you in call kinds of confusion, like in sali forth or do you mean Sally the person, sigh...........Sara

72 this week.

First time to baja was the required trip to Tijuana from Naval Hospital in San Diego in 1952. Then a few trips in mid 60's while I lived in So Cal returning in 91 or 2. Moved to Baja full time in 1995.

And still here-----------

wornout - 5-20-2005 at 06:35 PM

pokey - 5-20-2005 at 07:20 PM

I'm 36 . I first started coming down to Baja inbetween fishing seasons when I was a commercial fisherman up in Alaska about 9 years ago. You now how it is after 3 or so months on a boat up in the gulf of AK or the Bering. A person will do anything and go anywhere to get warm again. Eventually I met my future wife in Ensenada moved north, settled down and had two daughters. After seven years of that my wife was desperate to be in warmer climes and suggested that we move closer to her family  So here we are!!

We've been here less than a month and most of that time was spent looking for a house to rent and moving our stuff down from Oregon. Moving is always a pain in the you know what but moving out of country was very stresssful and I'm so happy to be done with it  Now I have time to get out and explore this amazing place.

Barry A. - 5-20-2005 at 07:50 PM

I am 67, retired for 9+ years, and loving every min. of it. I lived my first 30 years only 11 miles from Tiajuana, so I will not count our many trips to TJ, Ensenada, and Rosarita Beach when a kid with my Mom and her friends. In 1955 I made my first big trip in Baja to the plateau of the San Pedro Martir with my aunt and Bud Bernhard (and others), where we wandered about for 8 days in the high country, with horses out of Melings Ranch-----we walked, and the horses carried all our gear. I was hooked!!! Been going back ever since. My Mom, a Navy widow, and her sister, a single girl (never married), took me all over Baja as a big kid (15 to 19) in their International Travelall 4x4----what an experience. My Mom and her sister owned a second home in Punta Banda right on the ocean for 13 years, selling out in 1980. That's about it.

Neal, I remember Jack Smith, too

Gypsy Jan - 5-20-2005 at 07:54 PM

Age: Old enough to know better, but then again, maybe not

Jack Smith's books about his adventures in Baja lit a fire inside me to find out more about this amazing, miraculous place and Fred Hoctor's columns and books added fuel to the fire.

I have owned several copies of all their books and lent/given all of them out.

I wish that they weren't out of print.

rogerj1 - 5-21-2005 at 12:15 AM

47 today!

My Mexican love affair began when I went to school in Mazatlan during college. We stayed with a family there, and quickly picked up Spanish thanks to total immersion. Afterwards, my compadre and I set off on a grand adventure which eventually ended on the beautiful island of Isla Mujeres. I don't know if I could handle the 2nd class bus service at this advanced age. I got my first taste of Baja when we took the ferry from Mazatlan to what was then the sleepy little town of La Paz. It took twenty years to make it back to Mexico. I took my family down for a vacation in Baja Sur last year and have been stricken with the fever since in a big way.

49, and I have a great birth date: December 31. First trip to Baja south of TJ was in 1975.

Osprey - 5-21-2005 at 06:32 AM

I'm 68. First trip to Baja 1969 -- Beech Bonanza to strip at what is now Los Barriles. Retired just a few miles from that spot 10 years ago. I have not been back to the states since.

Santiago - 5-21-2005 at 06:46 AM

54 - born and raised in Bakersfield so when I first drove thru TJ many years later I felt right at home........

Let's have some fun here and guess the age of some Baja-Babes who seem to be avoiding this thread:

Jeans would be about 35.

TravelPearl must be, well,,,,, how old is dirt? Least that.

M: requires some math: add up the age of all the old parts plus the age of all the new parts and divide by the total number of parts - maybe 15? :)

Baja Nana: hay-sus kreesto - not only do you have new parts but she's been smoked a bit too - and you gotta take trblmkr and add 25 - so must be close to 100!

MAH: this is hard - being married to MH must age you in dog years - just vehicle hassles alone would do it. But then think of all those years and all those smooth stones - gotta count for something.

[Edited on 5-21-2005 by Santiago]

Age is in the mind!

Jack Swords - 5-21-2005 at 07:36 AM

Hard to avoid this thread without seeming to hide the age factor. Will turn 64 this October, ran the 12K Bay to Breakers last weekend (clothes on!). Do 20 miles a week here in the Nipomo sand dunes, do several 70-80 mile backpack trips in the high Sierra each summer. Sure happy to be able!

Did Baja in mid 50's with parents, spent summers after started teaching on mainland Mexico by car down to Yucatan, Belize, to Costa Rica. Many, many years spent summers on the mainland on both coasts, N to S and E to W. Started Baja in earnest in early 80's, had a home in Todos Santos for 11 years (when they spoke Spanish in that town), and now spend a month in the Baja dirt hiking and backpacking with buddies, then 6 months in La Paz and environs living aboard our small sailboat during the winter. Nice to be in the company of so many wonderful Baja folks on this board!.

First trip was when I was a tiny frijole......... been in love ever since.
I was actually kidnaped in Baja when I was a few yrs old...kinda.:wow: A woman grabbed me and ran off into an alley with my mother screaming behind us. The woman noticed I was turning green inside her shop and ran me out to get sick in the alley. Poor mom thought I was gonna be sold into slavery.

burro bob - 5-21-2005 at 10:37 AM

I'm 51, thats almost 20 in burro years. First time in Baja in 94 on a trip to San Felipe via Ensenada with my Mom to check out the piece of desert we had won in a National Pen Corp. promotion. We liked the wide open empty desert of San Felipe better than the crowds on the Pacific side.
Things change. Moved out of El Dorado about 4 years ago when the place got filled up with retired postal workers, you never know when one of them might loose it.
Mom moved to the beach in town because she decided she liked crowds and crazy people. I moved into the ejido poblado. We bought a ranch in Valley Chico so I could fulfill my lifelong dream of being a hermit.

Looking at the "Baja Almanac Atlas" I can find "El Dorado" and "Valle Chico", but I cannot find the ejido you refer to. Is that at the mouth of Canon Cajon in Valle Chico?

bajalera - 5-21-2005 at 11:41 AM

I'm older than anybody [and by one more year on Sunday].

First went to La Paz in 1963 with my archaeologist husband, lived there with my three children as an undocumented alien until 1968, made many trips after that, have lived in La Paz again for a couple of years.

comitan - 5-21-2005 at 12:14 PM

Bajalera your only old in years, they only count if you act old.

lindsay - 5-21-2005 at 12:59 PM

I'm 36 soon to be 37 in July and my first trip was in elementary school with my parents on a day trip from SD to TJ for lunch and exploring. I thought my dad was so cool when he whipped out his Spanish and told the taxi driver at the border to take us to Avenida Revolucion. I remember the taco tray at the restaurant and brought home my first pinata and ceramic piggy bank from the border line...big fun when you're 7 :)

bajajudy - 5-21-2005 at 03:08 PM

Ok, never been afraid to say my age so why start now....57
First came down to San Jose in 1986 when a friend of mine was helping get the Tropicana Hotel kitchen set up so she could be their first chef. Stayed right on the square in her apartment and fell in love with the town.
My husband(we were not married then) and I continued to come down whenever we could get away for 5 or 6 years, then we missed a few.
We decided to buy some land in 96 and then built a small house in which we live today. Moved down permanently in 2000 and have never regretted it for a moment.
We enjoyed retired life until last year when my husband got bored and started our book business...Baja Books and Maps.
Now we get to travel Baja and write it off.....now that is cool!
Today is one of those picture perfect days that make you sigh and thank whoever you thank that you are here in this beautiful place....
Thank you!

burro bob - 5-21-2005 at 03:09 PM

Barry A
I am refering to the Ejido Plan National Agrario. It is the second largest Ejido in Mexico. It buts up against Ejido Saldana to the north (the land behind La Ventana is Ejido PNA land) to the south it goes down to Ejido Delicias (close to Campo El Vergel), to the west it goes to the Siera San Pedro Martir and the National Park.
The "Poblado" is the area of the Ejido that has been designated as a residential area. It is the area south of El Dorado, going a little bit beyond where the big water tank is on the hill. The east boundary is the highway ( for the entire Ejido as well as the poblado). The west boundary is the small range of hills known as the Sierra Abandonada.
If this isn't confusing enough the Ejido PNA is subdivided into Groupos. Each Groupo is in charge of one or two communal zones. I am in an area covered by Groupo Cajon and they control the access to the canyons north of Barroso and south of Provedencia. It is why David found the gate closed when he and Jide went to Canyon Cajon. Someone was trying to round up some stock.
Agua Caliente is a Groupo, part of Ejido PNA.
East Valley road is a state maintained road. All other roads described by the people that post here are private ejido roads.
All ranches, regardless of how "abandoned" looking they are, have someone that has been given the rights to that property by the Ejido.
Sorry to get so far off topic.

with multiple personalities, should they state the age of each of their personalities or just their real age.......because my actual B-day was in '70 but after a day of work in the heat like today i'm feeling about 65 or 70,but sometimes after a few great days in baja i start feeling about 20 or 21....yea,i guess i like revisiting those moments sometimes:yes:

I'm 55 at this writing, which I've been told is old enough to know better but to young to resist. First time in BAJA I was 10 or 11. Made a day trip to TJ. As a constibuter to this board, I need to ask if anybody else likes that new word as much as I do? I am fixating on it, already used it several times in casual conversation in the last few days. It simply ROLLS off your tongue, KAHN-STIB-YOU-TER, and has so much potential: conspirator, contributor, con job, distributor, constant, whatever. The actual meaning is invenereal to me when a word sounds that good. Thanks for creating this Bernie, best new word I have seen in ages :biggrin::biggrin:

Ken: same here - love it. But which syllable gets the emphasis? maybe depending on the usage? I'm using it as kahn-sti-BU-ter. But once in a while it rolls off as KAHN-sti-bu-tor (as in one who constibutes). I've been playing around with the mexican version, kahn-STEE-bu-ter, and like that also. Lots of good nitches to use this one.

Ken Bondy - 5-22-2005 at 08:21 AM

Santiago: I would put the emphasis on the second syllable in both English and Spanish. I agree, the applications are endless, and I haven't even gotten around to fiddling with the Mexican version, thanks for reminding me of that.

Bernie: You've done it again, "fildubbed"!!!! Now I've got to go to work on that one. Keep 'em coming :light::light:

I must tell you that it was an 'intended' accident. So far you get an A+ in paper grading.;D

bajajudy - 5-22-2005 at 12:19 PM

When I first looked at the topic, I thought that it had something to do with bodily functions and shied away from it....you know the older you are the more constibuted you become.

But then the fish dont care about that either

Will a bowl of prunes cure constibution??

BJ: If I catch your drift, turns out the fish do care. In the late 90s (1990s, Neal) my two boys and I flew into La Paz, rented a pickup and drove to Las Arenas for a few days of fishing (if I recall, Las Arenas closed a few months after that). On our first day of panga fishing, we were into bull dodos real good - I'm talking 50 pounders here. My jr high kids were plum tuckered. Somewhere around noon the pangaro (sp) started looking very agitated, pointed to the front of the panga, yelling "banjo, banjo!" Now, I've been in quite a few pangas, even super ones, and never recall anything of the sort. After a strange few minutes of our guide getting more and more anxious, now practically screaming, "Banjo, Banjo" and pointing to the bow, it dawned on me that he needed to go numero dos and wanted us to face the front, away from him. We did, he did, and after the 'OK' was given, we returned to our posts, no one commenting on the trail of toilet paper behing our boat. The bite promply stopped, never to return.

Started running around North Baja on dirt bikes in the early seventies. Started building a little place to hang-out in San Nicolas after I drove 8200 miles R/T to Belize on my honeymoon and decided was wasn't going to do that again for a long time. A month and a half a year now for the past dozen years. Not enough time, but at this point I can't start going when I was younger, and I ain't gettin' any. (younger)

Age: 51

First trip to Baja: Same year I was born I think - I'll have to ask my mother.

Still don't know a 'am thing about the area. Might as well be a foreign freaking country.

48 last March....

1972..rudely woken up in the middle of the night by "federales" banging on the side of the VW van.....everyone out and the van searched at gunpoint...stack of Playboys gets us out of the jam.......

been going back ever since!!!!!!

bajapablo - 5-22-2005 at 09:11 PM

36 going on 37 June 18. First trip was a vanilla run to TJ for my mom, a puppet/marionette thingy for me and a ukelele for my bro after a family trip to the San Diego zoo in 75 or 76. Various TJ runs for blankets and vanilla every few years on family trips to SoCal. Took my own family to La Bufadora in 2000 and in 2003 and 2004 went on brotherhood trips to San Felipe, Gonzaga Bay, and San Quentin.

I wanna do this survey of old gents and broads! I am 51 with four kids?youngest being a 10-year-old Einstein! The oldest is a system engineer with Yahoo.com I have owned Night Clubs and Landscaping businesses in California. Been exploring Mexico for about 19 years, but not Baja. I discovery of Baja three years ago?and we all fell in love with the area. It?s primitive in a sort, undiscovered, and it?s not commercialized much. I will call this place home in the future.

What's a constibutor?

Hook - 5-23-2005 at 12:31 PM

A person who clogs up the board with unnecessary posts?

Are you 'positive' you made it to Baja?? Sorry, couldn't help but laugh at those ideas. So much so, I had Julio bring another pina colada to our beach cabana here at the resort.

p.s. you WERE kidding, right? If not, more power to you..hope you enjoy your beginnings in Baja.

Me? Kid? You got to be kidding!

Yankee, that looks like it's right infront of Bahia Santa Maria! With drive up delivery service like that, does anyone still have a problem with beach driving in Baja???:lol::lol:

Hi, I have been reading the posts for a while to get the flavor of the board. I first went to Ensenada and the Rosarita & Estero beach areas-- camping & hoteling -- in the late fifties as a 16-year-old. Continued to visit, adding Tecate & San Felipe, until the late sixties. Then spent many years on the east coast; back now in northern CA. A few years ago I asked son Bajaboy to take me for a Mexico journey from SD. We ended up at the Half-Way House for lunch. I was taken aback by the changes to the coast.

Since then I have visited several times, going to Cabo & the Todos Santos areas, and to Barra de Navidad, Guadalajara, Ajijic, & Lake Chapala inland. By the way, I add my vote to the others for Hotel Mar de Cortez in Cabo, an affordable and congenial place in walking distance of most things, with a pool and good food and drinks.

I have enjoyed reading all the good information from the knowledgeable folks on board, and I'm using suggestions to put together my next visit, I think to La Paz or Loreto. I must say that I was quite relieved to finally hear from the women on the board, because at first when I tuned in, it seemed Very Male. Now that stuff goes to off topic (which I also read, but only in small doses)and the info and pictures are easier to access.Thank you to the poets, writers and artists among us for your lovely gifts.

I still haven't quite figured how to get logged on as a member, but I am definitely in the wings and hovering around. Thanks once again for giving background, history & experience. I am very interested in tracking down information on the very large (3 inches) blue black wasp (I think) that was sucking nector from the white flowered shrub by our patio in the Cocina Pacifica area last October. I have not been able to find it identified on the net. (Smaller versions exist, but none of the size I saw.) Does any one know any good insect books for that area (southern Bajac oast)? Or online collections? Bye, Zoe

I know where the edit button is and could have easily changed my goof---But I decided not to because I felt that Ken Bondy's post added a certain flair and zest to this thread. Well over 2000 hits makes it appear that it did just that.

Now it is someone else's turn to coin a new word, make fun of themselves and bring a bit more haha to our simple little lives.

It will also make me pay much more attention to the Preview Button.

Ken Bondy - 5-23-2005 at 07:13 PM

Bernie I hope you realize that my post was in jest and just for fun, albeit somewhat at your expense. Nothing personal, you know I consider you a good cyberfriend. Plus I have read both of your books several times ;D;D

Eye, great post. You should copy and paste this to the who you are thread at Baja.net. Check out the photo gallery there. It is the best there is. If anyone needs a baja fix. The pictures there will at least get the monkey off your back.

Ken Bondy - 5-23-2005 at 07:20 PM

OK I confess. I spelled "friend" wrong in my last post and, unlike Bernie, chickened out and corrected it!
