MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The death toll in Mexico has risen to at least 10 people from Hurricane Marty, which battered the northwestern part of the
country earlier this week, emergency officials said on Thursday.
Earlier counts put the death toll at three, with several missing from the storm, a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. A Category 2
storm can cause moderate damage.
Mexico's civil protection agency said in a statement that four people died in the Baja California peninsula, four in the state of Sonora and two in
the state of Sinaloa.
Marty caused widespread flooding and damage to buildings when it landed on Monday morning with 100-mph winds and torrential rains. It was later
downgraded to a tropical storm.
Marty was about the same strength as Hurricane Isabel when it came ashore on the east coast of the United States last week, killing at least 28 people
and cutting power to more than 5 million homes and businesses.
