1998 Johnson 25hp electric start.
I hooked up my battery leads backward and a lot of smoke came out from under the motor cover
. I cannot see or smell anything burnt. I tried starting the motor and no problems, she ran great. The charging system seems to be
working well also. Could I have damaged something? Is something electrical going to fail on me soon when I least expect it? Should I worry about
either of the two coils?
Thanks for your help, I really hate to admit to such stupid actions.

Really check your battery connections with a voltmeter to absolutely make sure you are charging the battery close to 14dcv.
The charging diodes can blow very easily in the rectifier curcuit.
If you have this 14dcv voltage charging, you got lucky.
Were there sparks which caused the smoke on the battery posts?
Check all the fuses you have and make sure all are a-ok and not bent or discolored.
Something was burning to cause all that smoke.
Do you mix the 2 cycle oil in your gas directly and manually, or is there an auto injection auto mix on the motor?
The power pack on your motor also normally blows up, but this didn't happen either. Amazed.
Sounds like a really tough 25 hp. A Keeper!

The charging system is actually puts out about 11 VDC at idle and much higher than that at speed. Can this cause th charge system to put out to much
voltage, can the voltage regulator if there is one go bad?

11vdc is too low at idle. What is the voltage, say around 2500 to 300 rpm.
The regulator circuit is part of the selenium rectifier charging apparatus.
If the voltage doesn.t come up, you will have to get the charging parts and have installed. Sounds like time to get it to an outboard mechanic.
The parts are expensive.

Since i have no tach, I am just guessing on the speed. At 2500-3000 rpm, the system charges at about 16 vdc
