We had an eclipse not so very long ago. My guys told me about it the day before it happened so I was ready :lol:

Not sure what I was ready for but at least I knew it was coming.
What I wasn't ready for was to wake up on the day of the eclipse to my trees being clumb by the guys placing red rags at the tops of the mangos. :?:

Upon their reentry to earth I asked what the heck was going on up there. I sure didn't remember putting any bamboo up there and the mangos weren't ready.
Here's the scoop. When there is an eclipse, it is the belief that a red flag/rag deflects the strange light emitted from a partially covered sun :?:

and protects the fruit.
I do not question any of their ideas and try to learn from them no matter how ridiculous I find them to be. But, in this case, I was sure that a really good shipment of mota had washed in somewhere and these guys were seeing if it worked.
Well, after checking all their pockets for Visine and rolling papers, I came up empty handed and they assured me that this was not the case at all. They were serious about it and it affects aguacates as well.

So, after the trees being "flagged" they went back to bamboo stuff and carried on. I drove into Los Barriles to check in with the reply counters on Nomads as well as bambusiness.
On the way there, I saw that all the mangos and aguacates in San Bartolo had these red flags. Either it was one big shipment or these guys were serious!
Has anyone (Cinco/DK) heard of this holistic eclipse medicine for trees before or is there some scientific reasoning behind this?
Nevertheless, when you see the red flags in the trees, now you know why they are there.

That is -practiced as well as other things such as not cutting the palm Leaves for a Roof until after a full Moon and After oct. 21st of each year.

Thanks JR. I had seen those flags and thought that they were some sort of political statement. You see a lot of flags in trees in Nicaragua for the political parties.

I'm told by mi amigos is done because the termites leave the trees during a full moon to find their mates - and so there are fewer of them left to lay eggs in the palms that would hatch in one's new roof being made of the fonds...sounds reasonable to me...

hit the nail on the head regarding the full moon and cutting. When I order bamboo, I know it won't be cut until the full moon. Tio Pablos and many others are going to be replacing their roofs soon because of not waiting.
Patience is mandatory in Mexico, for many reasons!

Eclipse in Baja???

When did that occur???

We were there in April for the 'partial eclipse' which we enjoyed through #14 welding glass.

The last total eclipse in Baja (that I know of) was in 1991, and yes, we were there for that one.... drove a lot of miles to see it, and it was well worth seeing!

Partial eclipses ain't eclipses.....
sort of like being partially pregnant _______ or fill in the appropriate phrase.

On April 8, 2005 there was a partial eclips that was visible in the US and Mexico.
It was the last partial eclipse of the sun that will be visible from the continental U.S. until May 20, 2012

in Baja the eclipse on April 8 was 10-35%

Got it!!

At the 1991 Eclipse (the real one) there was some pretty weird stuff going on.
People blowing horns and whistles and stuff to "ward off the spirits."
Guess it worked, we saw no spirits.... other than those in the Carta Blanca bottle.

We were at KM 100 above La Paz, it was awesome.

And yeah, we did see the partial (not an eclipse) in April at Bahia.....
It would have been very difficult for 'natives' to distinguish a 35% partial, since they would not have been able to look directly up and discern the event without some type of lens.

Of course they could have looked in water for the reflected partial orb.

And, they would have had no means to predict this....
