Mexican Fireworks

Sharksbaja - 6-27-2005 at 03:11 PM

Boy is this topic relevent to my experiences in Baja. As a life-long pyro I must share a little bit of the past. I'm not quite sure at what age I started getting fireworks and "Horsechit" cigarettes but I was around 14. My dad would always drag us down to Tijuana to shop and pick up booze for himself. I started bringing cherry-bombs and cracker-balls back three or four times a year. I loved finding the stores that had them. I always had to ask to see them as they were typically out of sight. I loved some of the unique types like the triangle firechackers, the dangerous sky rockets and myriad others.
As a young enthusiastic idiot I borrowed my folks car while they were away and drove down and filled the car with a variety of 'works' including many "bricks" of firecrackers. While just crossing over the border the transmission burned up and we barely coasted off the highway. Now what do I do with a carload of "works"?

tomorrow, the other part

also, I meant to ask what is available these days?

sounds like it is going to be a good story. but why do you make it a multi part soap opera?:?:

we just bought some

eetdrt88 - 6-27-2005 at 03:33 PM

from a traveling salesman at La Fonda at the campground....he had all kinds and when we told him we wanted bigger ones he took off and came back with the ones that look like dynamite tied to a three foot long stick...the fuses on these really sucked, they never stay lit...one went off about 10 feet from the ground which had caused quite a scare for us but really excited all the other campers:O

Me No - 6-27-2005 at 03:36 PM

Lefty says, almost anything you like, but they are illegal in baja sur. There is a good store for them in chapultepec. and another in San Felipe. Those guys are going to be getting a few of my green backs in the next few days.:fire:

ahhh, yes. those are/were some of the greatest bombs ever. 20 years ago we'd cut the bomb of the stick and put them in our socks, underwear, etc... the sticks went into our cold wet wetsuits and we never got caught. back at the ranch-we lived above the frontier drive-in in point loma. during the feature presentation we'd tape one or two back together and set them in the bush on the canyon edge, pointed towards the screen parallel to the ground. they'd make it about 3/4 of the way before they exploded about 50 feet off the ground. great fun...

Legal or No ?

MrBillM - 6-27-2005 at 06:24 PM

It would be interesting to know exactly what the law is supposed to be regarding the use of fireworks in and around San Felipe, among other places. I have yet to get a straight answer.

I do know that at least one of my neighbors believes it is illegal. Last year when he was setting them off in his front yard, I told him with the next blast I was going to pick up my Cel Phone and call the law in San Felipe. It probably would have accomplished nothing, but he stopped so he thought it was illegal.

Sharksbaja - 6-27-2005 at 06:30 PM

So what goes on in Baja on the 4th, is it a gringo thing? Does anything happen? I have no idea and never gave it any thought.

I know for a fact that there is a major Fireworks retail shop, north of town. Has bout everything in there except for the Titan Missile! Perhaps it's cool to shoot em off in the desert or on the beaches away from town? If can not find any legal answers on this, from the www

Fireworks

jrbaja - 6-27-2005 at 06:58 PM

50 "pennyrockets" fired into the outhouse at K38 1/2 while holding our dear friend in there on a surf outing. Hysterical!!
On the down side and much later in life I have seen these,
1 wrist burned to the bone when the skyrocket stuck to his hand.
6 year old with totally blackend face while Dad lights bomb.

Ours and most dogs are terrified from them.
Countless stories about fireworks accidents from living here.

Nowadays, they have balls launched out of tubes that put everything we were accostumed to to shame and available everywhere in Rosarito. . Almost like Disneyland or Seaworld!

They are legal in most parts of Baja Norte unless specifically posted in a specific enclave. Gaviotas is one of those. But, usually alcohol is involved by the time it's worth lighting them and that's when things get burned down and people get hurt. Some communities have taken precautions, probably because of past incidents.

What a mixed message eh? Be extremely careful when playing with these things and I ain't lieing!

Bruce R Leech - 6-27-2005 at 07:05 PM

I don't use them anymore but all be damed if I'm going to tell the Mexican people here to change there laws and not to do the things that they enjoy like the San Felipe beach club dose.

Well, not in Rosarito. There is actually a law that prohibits them without a permit. That's why most of it happens on the beach, which used to be out of the city's jurisdiction.

What irritates the hell out of me is that people are so damned rude. Twelve...one....later, they just don't give a s**t. And when you ask them it's, "Hey this is Mexico,I can do what I wan't."

I'll go for that. If I can catch a few of them I'll do what I want.:fire:

Sounds like this man needs my Viking Hat!
I agree....at Pete's Camp, down a beach or two...there were knuckleheads shooting them rockets off.....two in the a.m. :fire:

Although I do know a few clowns

jrbaja - 6-27-2005 at 08:58 PM

who have lit them in Rosarito Beach proper, even the P-ncheist of P-nches generally have enough sense to stumble their way to the beach before lighting themselves on fire!

from years of experience...

Sharksbaja - 6-27-2005 at 11:07 PM

I can tell you that the Mexican varieties were half duds and half were unpredictable except for the regular firecrackers. I quit using Mexican works shortly after a bad experience(but not cause of works).
Be responsible and shoot them off away from people, houses and vegetation. It's too bad a few (ahem) idiots make it unpleasurable for some of you. It's a very big event here in the NW and we have VERY FEW accidents and problems on the 4th. It's all about maturity and respect and it's clear that idiots run rampant in Mexico.

The law against fireworks cannot be enforced on the beach, it is federal land.

greybaby - 6-27-2005 at 11:59 PM

Our son came to visit us several years ago right before New Year's. He decided he was going to take some of the "real" fireworks to Idaho with him to celebrate with his buddies. Since he was flying from San Diego, we told him we thought he was going to have problems getting them on the plane. So he decided to leave them behind - but for fun decided to light just one of the "bombs" in the street where we lived in Valle Dorado in Ensenada. I figured the whole police force of Ensenada would show up but it was like nothing had happened. For the first time when we crossed the border, the agent looked right at him and asked him if he had any fireworks. He smiled and told him, "I did, but decided it wasn't a good idea to bring with me so I left it in Ensenada." Smart boy!! We blew the rest off on New Year's Eve in Ensenada!!!

One time when I was a small boy of 7-8 in the early 1970, I wanted some mexican firecrackers, you know, the homemade ones made out of newspaper that are painted red. We stopped in San Quentin and tried to find some.
We were having poor luck so my dad asked the Pemex guy, in his spanglish, my dad asked for "Fuego-boom-booms" and pantomimed am explosion....the guy smiled and pointed us to a small shop down the street.
We went and asked and the guy said he did not have nada. We said the Pemex guy said he did. He brightened up, went to the back room of his shop, and came out with a box of sweating Dynomite! :o. We politely indicated we were interested in the "fuego-boom-booms" that were mas pequino. Which he did not have. We of course did not buy the Dynomite.

Timely

MrBillM - 6-28-2005 at 09:31 AM

After reading and commenting on this yesterday, last night at 10pm, a group just down the beach started their bombardment. It lasted for about an hour with my dogs hiding inside the casa the whole time. Although it is dark just after 8 pm, apparently the marooons aren't yet juiced up enough at that time.

My best experience with Fireworks in Baja was about four years ago. We were down swimming in the lagoon and there was this family group with small children camping under a palapa adjacent to the water. One of the male adults (father ?) was setting off one bomb after another. The youngest child was in tears and screaming his/her head off. The adult bent down to light another and it IMMEDIATELY went off. He stumbled back screaming and holding his hand. They quickly threw all of their gear into their truck and went roaring off to town (I guess). When someone commented "Oh, that's too bad", I said "Too Bad ? I hope the SOB blew his hand off".
Sometimes (not often enough) there is justice.

I sure would not want to be your neighbor.

Sharksbaja - 6-28-2005 at 11:55 AM

I find the last two sentences of your comment repulsive, disgusting and in poor taste MrBill. Just my opinion.

The Congress recently passed a law that allows state and local agencies to enforce the law in the federal zone. Of course this means that now they will enforce them to their own advantage, not their constituents.

Hi Tom. Unfortunately, I won't be home on the 4th, but Dave will!! I have to go back to Montana to be with my dad. Had surgery which had a worse outcome than we had hoped and my sister needs me back up there.

Used to have to buy the fireworks we really liked in Idaho out of dealers' trunks and then try to figure out where we could set them off and not burn down the neighborhood!!!

As soon as I get back, your doll of a wife and I need to go for a run on the beach!!!

what makes you think I would behave that way in Baja.

My Oregon neighbors wake me up sighting in their high-powered rifles or the loggers with chainsaws. Is that ok?

Where Do You Live ??

MrBillM - 6-28-2005 at 05:32 PM

I once owned some property in the High Desert where the minimum lot size was 2.5 acres and most of it was uninhabited, but I don't ever remember anyone sighting in their rifles early in the a.m. Ditto that for early a.m. chainsaws. If you live in an area that remote, I guess you have to expect that sort of rural recreation. If it violates local or state ordinances, I would say that you would have every right to report it. It probably makes you think twice about going next door and complaining, though.

Me No - 6-28-2005 at 05:54 PM

You nailed the bullseye....Indian Reservation!
The stuff they sell up here would get you arrested for explosives back down in Laguna! It's like being in Vietnam on the forth up here with all the "Legal" fireworks sold. But you aren't suppose to drive them off the reservation!

It's the same here...rural today, gone tomorrow. You would think it remote but only 20 minutes to the caost. The sheriff told me one day that it's perfectly legal to shoot from his property adjoined our 3 acres. The loggers are on the slopes in the Coast Range at 4 am and are cutting by 5am . G.P. is one neighbor forest owner and when you live near T.C. (timber/consevation) desiginated lots you have no recourse.

My neighbor quit doing it finally. Them loggers will never cease.

Thinking back I forgot to mention that this "mission" was well thought out. THe devious teens stashed all the fireworks in various niches and panels of the Buick stationwagon. Must have been a whole lot to risk my butt for. What was I thinkin'?
The stupid transmission overheats in the Border Crossing line and burns up in San Ysidro. What will I tell my parents when they get back from Vegas?
You see my folks did not say I could "borrow" the car while they were gone and it was their only car. Man was I gonna eat poop! WE got 1 ride all the way home hitchhiking.(those were the days!)
My folks arrived late that night and I had a plan to use my sisters van and go tow it back to P.V. from San Ysidro. They were not too sympathetic however but went along with my plan. Punishment would come later. All went well as we hooked up the rented tow bar and made off up I-5.
Somewhere around San Clemente I decided to pull off and get gas. As I merged over I saw some idiot coming up to right fastso I bombed over to the exit ramp and halfway up the van lost traction and we jack-knifed and flipped the van. THe wagon sheared a pole broadside then flipped us back up and then plowed its way under the rear of our van.
Blew out the left side window and embedded glass in my elbow.
After separating the two with two tow trucks we realized then that the station wagon was totaled because of the pole. THe van had a new trapazoidal shape and looked pretty funny from the rear. The front looked not too bad. Ater checking we found the van still ran ok, but we had two very wiggley rims. I was able to make my date to pick my mother up after work. You should have seen her face when she came around to my side of the van:O

Later that week we drove back to San Clemente to remove the panels etc. and dislodge our cache from the dead wagon. The impound yard guys said nothing! times have changed quite a bit though.

Fortunately no one got hurt bad.

Use fireworks responsibly so all can enjoy.

Do you know what your kids are doing, I certainly do!?

What town is the background of this picture?

Geary - 6-29-2005 at 08:06 AM

The Pyro-technic Wacho's (a small group of dedicated friends that have always arranged to have fireworks at the annual 4th of July Picnic at El Burro) have told me it is still legal to buy some fireworks in Baja Sur, it is just illegal to be in possession of then. This sounds perfectly logical to me. Perhaps I've been living on the beach too long.
