Kinda depends on your destination.

Having been raised in Santa Monica, back in the days when P.O.P. was undemolished, I can honestly say that I prefer the road shown above.

It cracks me up when I read people saying how BAD that road is between Puertecitos and Gonzaga!

I mean look at that photo! That is an awesome dirt road considering the volcanic mountains it is built over...

The BAD road was the one it replaced in 1986... That road was a 4WD, low range, pray to God road! I was over it in '65 and '67 as a kid... and drove it myself in '74, '75, and '79... '79 just barely bade it...

After Mex. 1 was finished in Dec. '73, all cargo for Gonzaga came in from it, from the south... No maintenance was done south of Puertecitos to Gonzaga after the highway was finished. It got worse and worse...

They built the new road in '85 & '86... what a difference! It still will be sad when (if) they pave it.

Here are a pair of photos from my 1979 trip...

I was refering to the traffic and people in this posting. You are right though...this section of the road is fine. It's the potted hellroad 22 miles south of San Felipe that needs to be repaired.

And with God's blessing it will remain that way!

A better road would have it looking just like Santa Monica, post haste :light:

Yah, no kidding!

You and Denise going south this weekend?

Bajaddict - 6-28-2005 at 07:30 PM

No, we've got a hog now to ride on the 4th, and a few trailer upgrades planned..... needless to say the investments mentioned above have elimanted liquid cash for travel. Oh well, you can only be in one spot at one time.

Next Baja Fix: Labor Day for a "P-nche gringo vacation".

Another view: I'd rather be here...

gringorio - 6-28-2005 at 09:27 PM

When I was there, I wanted to be home. When i got home, I wanted to be there...

Las Islas Encantadas

p.s. thank you for the good reminder yankeeirishman!

I was born in Dogtown and have lived there for many years, but I'll take dirt every time. That's one smooth road.

Packoderm - 6-29-2005 at 03:54 PM

What I prefer? It all depends. Say that somebody offered you a 1 acre, beachfront parcel either in Santa Monica or along the SF/Gonaga road. Which would you choose? But YIM, I know what you're getting at, and that is a fine stretch of road.

awesome photo,Gringorio
