Does anyone know of a Honda outboard dealer anywhere in Baja. I had heard that there was one in La Paz but cannot find it.

I think the dealer is just outside the marina at the malecon.
There is another dealer a few blocks away that sells Yamaha and next door to them is the best outboard mechanic I have found. I can't remember his
name, but he has been very helpful and more than honest.

YES, Honda has dealers here.

The TELMEX Los Cabos phone directory has a big ad on page101.
As I have a 130 Honda in service, it is nice knowing I could order parts if needed.
Many commercial pangas now have Honda's on them.
Also popular are the Mercury 4 strokes(made by Yamaha with Merc decals) and Yamaha 4 strokes.
You rarely see a "NEW" 2 stroke motor of a large size(115 hp and up) down here any more.

I am told that my ignition coil is shot and needs to be replaced before I can use this motor. I'm at Santa Rosalia and was told to head back to San
Diego. Will head to La Paz as per suggestion.

Hi Roberto,,,, The powerhead is 100% Yamaha. As to the lower unit, I don't know.
I do know that Mercury lower units were copied 100% by Honda for their mid-range to90 hp.
For the 130 hp Honda, Honda made it as a copy from Mercury.
The Honda engineers told me that Mercury had the best, bulletproof design in 1998.
Maybe still true today.
The new high hp Mercury Verado, 6cyl inline, supercharged, injected, is fully Mercury's design, so say their engineers, when I asked them.
Mercury has a terrible reputation here. And a racist slur attached to them,,,, they are black and don't work. Maybe not true, but I have heard this
for over 20 years here.
On the topic of Honda dealers here, they don't carry much in the way of parts, BUT can get anything.
For new motors, they stock a few at each place, but sure have a lot of orders. Just checking out the panga fleets and what is being now used, says
this.
Our mechanic here, Ernesto Mendoza, is over in Guadlajara this week at the Honda training offices, getting his Honda certification. He had earlier
gone over for the Yamaha 4 stroke training.
Ernesto has worked on many Yamahas here, for several years now.
The problem, the gringo's boats have been sinking while on anchor!
They come out submerged, and Ernesto gets them running fine again!!
He replaced my total hydraulic tilt trim assy a month ago.
He even had several used assemblys for me to choose from!!
Guess what, ALL the hydraulic tilt/trim assys are the same! Honda, Yamaha, Evinrude, Johnson, Mercury, Suzuki, etc,,, all use the same complete
unit.Bwaaaaahahhhaaaa. I didn't know that!
Just like an icemaker, if you have ever replaced one. All refrs use the same,,,,Whirlpool,,,,.
Saved me a bunch of money, and done in a day. Mine came off a 200hp, 2001 Evinrude 2 stroke, blown engine, very low hours!!!

I think you'll find that a lot of the external parts (almost anything that bolts on) of all outboards are interchangable. This includes starters,
generators, fly wheels, hydraulic units, ignition coils, pull starters, etc. Also some of the internal parts like water pump housings, impellers, and

My outboard?s been a nightmare on this trip. First no spark to either plug. Then one plug sparking. Then both plugs sparking. Then nothing again.
Finally at the dealer it just starts up as nice as can be and runs without problems. I?m ready to throw this thing into the drink as this point. Now,
no parts were changed and all is running well again.

Mr Chuck: Regarding Mercs: just got back from Sitka and the whole damn fleet is converting to 6 cyl Verados - mostly because merc is warrenting the
units on commercial applications which no one else is. I was very impressed with the the motor and the captains all spoke highly of them. Very
quiet.
The 90-115 hp 4 strokes thru 2005 are the Yammie heads with Merc's lower unit. There is a marked improvment in the lower unit somewhere in the 2003
run. I know this as my new 2004 boat came with a 2003 115 hp, was stolen on Christmas day!, and replaced with a 2005. The machanic told me I would
notice the shifting was smoother and it was.
Good to know that the hydraulics are all the same.
