Cell Phone Service

Marinero - 7-8-2005 at 11:26 AM

Does anyone have any actual experience with Cingular's coverage for its North America plan, in the Buena Vista/Los Barriles area? The coverage map on its website is not clear about that area.

Thanks. Bill Barbour

Cingular uses Telcel in Mexico and I have never had trouble getting service in almost any town with Cell Service. La Paz, Loreto, Cabo, and offshore almost the entire way from San Diego to Cab0 and around to La Paz.

I use Cingular North American Plan. It works well for me in Loreto and everywhere TellCell has coverage.

Just got back from Los Barriles. Cingular worked there and every major town on the way down. You have to call and get set up for international roaming, its .79/minute

JZ - 7-8-2005 at 10:11 PM

Frank: you need to get the North America Plan. No .79/minute roaming charge.

roaming

I use Cingular north american plan. On my first bill I had roaming charges in Rosarito, I called and they removed them. Since then, no roaming charges in Loreto or Northen Baja.

Several Bills on the North American Plan. No Roaming charges.

Where did you travel.

Reeljob - 7-9-2005 at 03:03 PM

On a yacht from Los Angeles to La Paz (via Cabo) In the air over Hermosillo to call Prescott flite service and update my eta, Loreto, La Paz, San Carlos, Guymas, Turtle Bay & lets see.... offshore East side of Cedros Island, offshore Todas Santos, probably missed a few, but never had any trouble other than the Cedros Call was a little weak. Worst reception, Sunroad Marina, San Diego.

No roaming charges.

thanks a mil for reply.

Is that the same thing as AT&T? I use thier Freedom phone. Thanks.

Reeljob - 7-10-2005 at 10:00 AM

You need to sign up for the North America Plan and be sure they "activate International Calling". this will almost guarantee you can call OUT of MX but maybe not into MX. If you have a problem callling into MX you need to call support (they have a toll free number but I don't have it available right now) get the number from Cingular BEFORE you leave the states. Then, when in MX, call the support number FROM ANOTHER PHONE, NOT YOUR CELL PHONE. They will trouble shoot it with TelCel and get if fixed pretty quickly. Once fixed it seems to stay fixed.

Cingular bought ATT Wireless late last year.

Anonymous - 7-10-2005 at 12:12 PM

No wonder my rates went up. Time to switch...again...sigh.

JZ - 7-10-2005 at 12:44 PM

$59/month for 450 minutes (plus roll-over to the next month), no long-distance charges, no roaming charges, coverage all over Baja and the mainland. I'd call that a good deal.

Cel Phone Service

MrBillM - 7-10-2005 at 01:01 PM

Man, some of you people sure pay a lot of dough for Phone Service. It must be my faint Jewish roots, but I just make it a point to not use the phone unless it is necessary.

I've had an ATT service with the cheapest regional plan (29.99+taxes=34.99) for years now (with no international plan) and it has worked fine everytime calling the U.S. albeit with a high per minute charge. Last year I bought a prepaid Telcel Nokia phone for $39.99 with 300 pesos of airtime. The per minute charge to the U.S. is much better, you can add prepaid time in 100 peso increments and it is good for 60 days with the time rolling over whenever you add to it. ATT/Cingular will work wherever Telcel does because they use the same network.

BTW, coming North last week, I got a beep on my ATT phone and the display said I had a new text message. I thought, what the Heck, I don't have text messaging.
It was a text message from Cingular telling me what a great deal it was. Pretty sly.

JZ - 7-10-2005 at 01:26 PM

I don't pay anything. My company pays the bill (for phone/Blackberry). I had them put me on this plan so they don't b@tch about $300/month charges in MX. Have world-wide data roaming on Blackberry. The new 7100g is an amazing machine.

I use Skype for long-distance at my house down there (2 cents per minute, bought $10 worth about two months ago and I'm down to $7 credit).

Skype ??

MrBillM - 7-10-2005 at 04:18 PM

How much latency is there on the Skype ? I'm using Crystal Voice on my DirecWay in Baja and it's OK for checking and clearing my U.S. Voicemail numbers, but it's damn irritating when you have to conduct business. During my last trip, I had one Dish Receiver that I had to have reauthorized. Since a good call to tech support is going to take 15-20 minutes or longer, I used the Crystal Voice. It worked, although the tech almost hung up on me a number of times, even though I kept repeating that I was on an Internet phone and there was a delay.

JZ - 7-10-2005 at 05:53 PM

I use it with DSL. It would have the same problem w/DirecWay.
