LA PAZ, Mexico - Mexican authorities on Sunday reported the drowning death of an artist from Tucson whose body was found floating off Mexico's southern Baja California peninsula.

The body of Wendy Ewell, 30, an Iowa native living in Tucson, was located on Saturday about 875 yards off the coast in the Bahia de Paz, 770 miles northwest of Mexico City, said Manuel Banuelos, a spokesman for the Baja California Sur attorney general's office.

The body was found naked but without any marks of violence, suggesting strong currents may have carried away the woman's clothing.

An autopsy determined the death was by drowning, Banuelos said.

Ewell was reported missing by her husband, Lars Ewell.

The two were on vacation to celebrate their sixth wedding anniversary, said Lars, contacted on Sunday at a hotel in La Paz.

"We were down here together taking a class together, a Spanish class," he said.

"She couldn't make it on the last day. So she didn't go to class, and I did. When I got back (to the hotel), she wasn't here."

Funeral plans were being made for Saturday in Omaha, Neb.
