The REAL Baja

bajalou - 7-17-2005 at 11:46 AM

I see lots of posts that refer to the "real Baja".

What is the "Real Baja" to you? Is it Baja today or some happy memory?

Let us know.

:saint:

All of it !

jrbaja - 7-17-2005 at 11:49 AM

come to think about it, even the stuff I complain about has it's place in the whole picture.

And, it sure beats Pico Rivera:lol:

That's right Yankee, a nice breeze blowing from the Sea of Cortez, a gallon of ice tea, and my laptop out here using the WiFi from inside. How could life be better than this?

Come on down!!!!!!!

bajajudy - 7-17-2005 at 02:47 PM

The REAL Baja is whatever you make of it. It has so many faces that almost anyone can find something wonderful....almost anyone....but not everyone. Thank goodness.
I have certainly found it to be addictive, but then I would not have moved here if I didnt love it.
The growth where I live is terrifying. One day on the way to the beach there are sand dunes; the next day they are gone and a neatly scraped landscape has taken their places. As of today, I can still go to the beach to walk my dogs but I do believe that those days are numbered. When that day comes, will I want to leave.....you darned right! But I plan to find another wonderful place here. Jeez there are almost 2000 miles of coast, surely I will find another place to walk my dogs.
This is my home and I plan to make the most of everyday that I live here
That said. It is 90 on my porch the hottest day yet. So I must say that the Real Baja is hot in the summer.....real hot.

bajalera - 7-17-2005 at 02:52 PM

To me the Real Baja, more than anything else, is made up of the unexpected things that always seem to happen there no matter how carefullly you plan. And that goes for today as well as yesterday. Situations that aren't always pleasant at the time eventually end up as adventures you find yourself telling other people about--"One time we camped at Miller's Landing and . . ." [A considerate Bajaficionado notices when their eyes start glazing over, and shuts up.]

When I was a teenager, I used to say... it was when you saw boojum trees!

Then I modified it to be anywhere on the peninsula off pavement!

The truth is there are many 'real Bajas', like when Bob H and Audrey invited us to Coctales Mazatlan in Ensenada!

Real Baja?: It is the people, the place, the food, and the fiesta spirit... it is many things to many people.

pokey - 7-17-2005 at 03:05 PM

82 in Ensenada 52% rh. Light breeze from the ocean makes it feel cooler. Had a late lunch of tacos with homemade corn tortillas courtesy of my lovely wife. Later I'll grill some bass I caught last night and open up a caguama or two.

Playas de Rosarito

jrbaja - 7-17-2005 at 03:25 PM

Carols' truck says it's 73 degrees. Slight overcast, slight breeze, locals be barbecuein, dead seal just washed up on the beach.
I better enjoy the aromas today!

"dead seal just washed up on the beach".

I've arrived!

Anywhere away from the coast and cities over 1000 souls.

Baja is heaven to some, and hell to most.

A toast:

May you have died and gone to heaven
an hour before the devil knows you're dead..

Cheers

the REAL baja

Paulina - 7-17-2005 at 07:39 PM

Real baja...
The place where I belong. The place where I began. The place where I'll end up.

The place where unpleasant smells are MORE than welcome, making me feel like I'm finally at home. Where the weight of humidity may slow down my locomotion, but forces me to smile at the same time as I feel the heaviness press against my body.

Where one must learn to slow down the pace of life because life will go on without you none the less.

The place where the cold desert nights force you hold conversations through chattering teeth as you sit around a campfire watching scorpions play kamikazi (sp?)with the fire as your tennis shoes melt into the rocks that encircle the inferno.

Where toes may freeze in the bottom of your sleeping bag, but they're still there in the morning.

The real baja is where you meet the smiling faces of the locals who over time can become your extendend family, the same people who will live in your heart even thousands of miles apart, who will visit you in your dreams long after they pass away.

The real baja is what you make it, as an individual. It's not the taco stand that will come and go. It's not the fishing spot that is on and off. It's not the physical, it's the mental.

We each make our own heaven and hell. My heaven lies south of the border. That's where my soul began and where it will end, eventually. That to me that is the real baja.

For me Baja is, among many other things, some of the nicest people and best food on this planet.

The really'really' Baja!

mike odell - 7-17-2005 at 11:04 PM

Some Moons ago I was going back and forth America North to
Baja South, and I had little time to dally,if I wan'ted to feesh,
So I would drive nonstop from Temecula to La Ribera, I would get to La Ribera in the small hours of daylight, see Mini Super Williams, stop and breath the sea air, and say to myself, Damn I'm home finally!! One more block to go and there is my trailer underneath the Palapa! Home was no longer to me, the US, southern Cal, or western Colo, Home was La Ribera, BCS MX!! Baja is HOME, moved down, and really never looked back!! And by the way, the Feeshing is still pretty damn good,as is life!!!

Sharksbaja - 7-17-2005 at 11:08 PM

Is this a trick question? I can't explain an addiction, sorry.

The real Baja starts when you turn off on that dirt road. Roll down the windows; tie my hair up and a fine dust starts to cover the dashboard. You bumpity-bump along, skirting eroded ditches, spotting a rabbit, a coyote; finally coming to the destination which may be the blue, blue of a glassy cove (or the bottom of a canyon) ? and it?s all yours. Feel the sand, the salt air breeze, the sun?s just starting to go down, so everything takes on a gold-rimmed glow. Pull open a chair, pop the top off a Pacifico, and watch the golden glow turn to orange, then red. You look forward to the adventure that awaits manana. Life is good

Taking the Ice House road over to San Juanico from Mulege for the day.

Picknic on playa Requeson.

Sitting in the shower with a fan blowing across you.

All of the above.

now that is an awesome description..
