Carrying dual auto policies

modhatter - 7-21-2005 at 10:33 AM

Do most of you living near the border towns carry both US and Mexican auto policies, for when you want to "go to the other side"? A realtor once told me that some of the Mexican insurance companies will cover you for those occational US trips. Don't know if that's true or not.

Anyone know anything about that? Also, for the Baha Norte area (Rosarito/Ensenada) what kind of yearly insurance costs are normal. I realize, the value of the car is a factor. I have read on some posts that some US companies will cover you for 50 to 70 miles into Baja, but since I will probobly be in Ensenada (80 miles) and want to take trips exploring Mexico, that would not be suitable. Any information from you Baha Norte people?

When we plan a trip across the border we purchase policies to cover the time we will be in the US. Policy runs about 9 dollars/day or 20 bucks for a week.

Depends where your car is registered. If AZ, you have to keep liability in force at all times. They don't recognize the day/week policies. If Calif, you can by day policies as sylens mentioned. I don't bother with colision as mine are older, but ALWAYS carry Mex liability. I get Drivers License ins. to cover all the US registered vehicles I might drive.

Where do you buy the weekly insurance policy and with what company.?? I always have trouble getting insurance for less then a year, so we buy the yearly policy and cancel when we get back here. But that's an expensive way of doing it.

We found a local agent:

C. Elena Bretts Paul
Agente Autorizado de Seguros
San Juan Capistrano #50, Fracc. Mision
Ensenada CP 22830
elenabretts@yahoo.com
(646) 178 5715 or 178 4394 or 170 1072

She's bilingual and extremely easy to work with. Never filed a claim, so can't speak to that aspect, but otherwise recommend her without reservation.

Can definitely vouch for Elena. She carries the insurance policy on our house as well. We do not have our auto insurance through her because she looked at what we carry from our home state of Idaho and what we have here and told us it was better than she could offer. Honest lady. Our Mexican friends who live here and travel to the other side use her also.
