Was hearing that the mission repair scheduled for after the festival had permission denied at the last minute....didn't get the full story....what
happened?.....

if it was cancelled (or denied permission) somebody was escercising some really poor judgement, in my opinion. We are going to lose this "ruin" if
something is not done, like NOW !!!!! What a shame.

From what I understand, it was learned that the area must be surveyed first by the Mexican government and be permitted, etc.

Yes, I did post on Nomad the night before we left (7-21-05) for the festival, that Julia of INAH (who up to this point was very supportive of our
plans) had just emailed me that I was to not excavate at the site (ie. dig a 4" wide, 1' deep X 20' long trench.
This was to place the drain pipe in (from just inside the mission, through the doorway and out towards the arroyo).
This would have stopped the water from further eroding the base of the doorway, underming the walls.
It was quite a shock... I purcased the materials, was going to do the labor (with some Nomads help maybe), and at no cost to Mexico.
There even had been talk of her coming and sending some students down to help, providing funds, etc. A lot of excitement and gratitude that some Baja
Nomads (Americans) had the interest and motivation to help.
In the end, when she wasn't going to attend the festival or go to the mission, I asked for an email that I had her approval to do this simple, first
step at preserving the site (no trenching through the walls, just out the doorway).
Perhaps she wasn't going to take that responsibilty and that is why she denied it?
Here's the gem of her email... she said an INAH architect was going to Santa Gertrudis the day we were going to the mission, and asked if I could take
him in to examine the site and return him the SAME day, so he could continue south!
Well, I had no room for another adult in my truck. If this person was able to hitch a ride with TheSquarecircle or another Nomad, it is almost a three
hour drive (with companion vehicle), one way from Santa Ynez to the mission and we were staying at the mission for 2 days, not coming back out that
night. That was a rich request by her, I thought!
As the drain pipe installation was initially Jack Swords idea, I emailed him the sad news to which he was not surprised.
Julia's waiting until just hours before my departure to email me was not nice. There has been no additional contact from her since. Another INAH
contact in Tecate has been emailing me, and felt bad that the project was halted in that manner.
Maybe another time, I have the materials... this winter perhaps?
