FILLING PROPANE TANKS IN MEXICO

Barry A. - 7-31-2005 at 09:50 AM

Does anybody know if you can get the "old style" propane tanks (the one's without the anti-overfill device) filled up in Baja CA?

It is almost impossible to get them filled in the USA, now. I have several of the old style tanks, and I was thinking of donating them to various fishing villages in Baja CA if it seems appropriate.

What do you think?

Barry, As Hose A said above a lot of people in Baja can use these tanks. We try an take a few each time we go down. I have people that have no use for them donate to us an we deliver them to Baja. Just dropped off four this last trip in the Colonet area.

Thanks folks---------

That is good to know. My wife and I are habitual "garage sale" folks, and we are always running into the old style 20 lb tanks that folks want to get rid of. Often, they give them to us for free. Now I know that there is a good use for them, and I will duplicate your ideas and take some down whenever I go.

Thanks again.

Barry

By the way------------

The new style tanks will work just fine with the old style plumbing------you just have to make sure that the "male" fitting on the hose does not have an "o" ring on it-----and even if it does, it will still work, tho the "o" ring on the male end gets really chewed up. The new style "female" fittng on the new tanks already has an "o" ring within, which accomodates the old style male fittings. (wow, that sounds confusing)

Bottom line: the new tanks will work with old plumbing.

Hose--------Because---------

I have all these old style tanks lying around and I wanted to know if they would work (i.e. that they could be legally filled) in Mexico-----so that I could get rid of them. Now that I know that they can, I will continue picking up free (or very cheap) 20lb tanks at garage sales and take them to the folks in the fish camps of Baja CA.

They ain't no good to me up here (USA) as nobody will fill them.

Sounds like a good idea to me, es verdad?

Old vs New Tanks

As already stated, the New style tank works fine with an old style male fitting and The O-ring on the male fitting is the only possible problem area. I keep plenty of spare O-rings. Like others have already said, I picked up a number of 30 lb old style tanks at an RV supply for gratis. In fact, the guy wanted to fill my entire truck up with them. When they dispose of them legally, they have to remove the valves before disposal.

A relatively good deal I just came across yesterday at Walmart is that they will exchange old style 20 lb tanks for the same price as the new style (14.95 filled) so if you're in the U.S. and want to get some of the later tanks, you can take them to Walmart.

Tanks for the info

Hey people!

Please, if you're gonna bring your old tanks for the folks down here please make sure that they're in good shape. Check the bottoms for rust and maybe sand and throw some epoxy paint on 'em.

You would not believe the condition of the tanks that I see when I take mine in to get filled.

Remember, the life you save might be mine.

Crappy Tanks

I see them fill dented tanks whose only color is scaly rust at the Zeta Gas dock. As long as the valve doesn't leak, they'll fill anything. Scary.

Dave Great advice, The ones we bring down are in Great shape no rust. I spray paint them to give longer life in the salt air. I have seen those tanks you talked about while filling a few or ours in Rosarito. Also we fill the tanks we donate to people.

Dave, By the way sent Mom an Dad to your Deli on Monady they are still talking about how good it was.
