Gecko

bajajudy - 8-2-2005 at 04:23 PM

One of my favorite sounds of Baja (or the tropics) is the sound of the gecko. Here is a pic that I took. They are almost translucent in the right light. They eat a shipload of mosquitoes too.

Great photo. It always amazes me how they can change colors.

Thanks for posting the photo Judy. I love gecko's. Growing up in the Sonoran desert I would often hang out under the street light until late catching gecko's and other nocturnal desert dwellers being a budding biologist at the time. Where was this photo taken? Any idea what species? :bounce:

They bring good luck to your neepa hut.

Bruce R Leech - 8-2-2005 at 07:06 PM

they eat a lot of c-ckroaches also. you can rent the big ones to your friends

In Hawaii, they chirp at night and walk on the cieling... do they do the same in Baja Sur?

Tucker - 8-2-2005 at 08:23 PM

I have several in my house that occasionally do their "chirping" act, one in my bedroom likes to talk to me at night, I don't know what he is saying. I hope it's all g-rated. They are very good at walking on ceilings. Even my Iguanas (outside) can ascend vertical surfaces, if they are rough.

Tucker, that cracks me up. I, too, love geckos - lots of them in Southern Florida where I grew up. Long, green, thin ones. But could turn brown if sitting on bark. That always amazed me.

Bob, these don't seem to change color,

Tucker - 8-2-2005 at 08:56 PM

They stay pretty much the color as in Judy's photo, maybe a little lighter tan color.

Sorry to interupt.....

Tucker, that is a really interesting Avatar you have now, is it a photo?, painting?, just what is it? Is there a way to blow it up so I can have a better look? Thanks....

Knowing this crowd, I was sure the the gecko poop would have come up. Have any of you ever noticed that their poop has a little white dot on top of the brown stuff. Its looks like a miniture white chocolate kiss. ok enough of that.
I also dont believe that they change colors. This was taken on my porch with the porch light on. There are 100's of them around the 3 lights on the porch.
One year before we moved here permanantly we were sitting outside because it was hot and we entertained ourselves watching the little boogers eat anything that came within their radar. Then there was a fight over an extremely large moth and one lost his tail......and the moth. We laughed and said "who needs tv?"

More than you probably want to know about lizard poo

Judy , if memory serves me correctly, since lizards don't micturate ,they excrete their urates into a common holding structure (cloaca) along with fecal material and reproductive products and it is all excreted together in one dump. The little white clump being the analogous urinary portion.

I believe birds use the same mechanism

Hope this imformation somehow has a positive impact on the quality of your day to day life :bounce:

Now that's funny. certainly had a positve effect on my day LOL:biggrin: By the way very interesting too. Where do you come up with these tidbits? k

Bob H - 8-3-2005 at 08:02 AM

Lots of excellent information here. I guess the type of lizard I was referring to (that changes color) is an Anole, or some species similar to this. They are quite common in Southern Florida.

Gecko

tehag - 8-3-2005 at 09:22 AM

Bumper crop of geckos in Loreto this year. Probably carryover from the 2 big rains in 2003: water makes bugs, bugs feed geckos, geckos eat and breed.

House has at least one breeding pair, and I've seen as many as 3 adults at the same time.

They crawl all over the walls and ceiling at night, and I swear, I've never had a more bug-free house.

I've not seen any color changing. I don't think they do that.

tehag - 8-3-2005 at 09:23 AM

They start out real small.

movinguy - 8-3-2005 at 11:28 AM

It appears that the official translation for geckos is "quizas". However, when I was staying in a house in Puerto Vallarta that was filled with the little buggers, the locals called them "wee-seez". :?:

Natalie Ann - 8-4-2005 at 08:21 AM

Tehag - your photos are incredible! They regularly produce a big "Wow!" from me.

And here's one of Tucker's geckos complete with the little gecko poop mentioned in earlier posts.:o
As I recall they regularly chirped and occasionally made a popping/knocking sounds.
