Preparing first trip

Anonymous - 8-6-2005 at 02:47 PM

Just got stranded here at this board.
We are preparing our first trip to Baja and want to leave in about 2 weeks from now.
Does anybody know about a good motel in the El Rosario or San Quintin area?

We are from S.D. and doing that stint the first day.
Final destination should be Santa Rosalia, Mulege or Loreto on the second day. Udecided yet
Thx for any help.
Claudio

David K - 8-6-2005 at 02:57 PM

In San Quintin town (near the highway): Los Cirios

In San Quintin (on the bay): Old Mill

In El Rosario: Baja Cactus (next door to gas station).

In the Search engine here....there are tons of good data on first time travels. Spend an hours or so...wondering thru the old posts. Might save you hours, (or even days) of bad times in Baja

DavidK has good information for newcomers here. I would follow his advisements (and others here give great information as well).

Be sure to carry insurance for that car...and trailer (if app). Again....go to search for the best advice on insuring your property. Single Mom or dad traveling must have an notorized approval from the missing parent, for any child under 18 taken across the border.

Oh....DO + DO + DO......try an fish taco from one of the street vendors! Bajagood!

Post your trip here! We all would love to see how your venture was! Have lotso' fun.

Hey DavidK and Yankee > thx for the info > good advice so far.
I'm travelling w/ my squaw > no kids on board > only lill tyrailor (a flyer you don't feel behind your car)
Recognized DavidK as the main informant about Baja on this board.
DK, you must have a great experiance about Baja, don't you?
Not blaming others, but your posts are the most informing of all.
But thx to Yankee as well !!!
Good advice , Yankee, I'll do it.

only lill tyrailor .....Make sure that you carry the legal docs for that trailer! I got turned away this year for "being stupid"! I forgot my legal docs on the trailer that I was taking to our lot in San felipe!

to Anonymous: why do you post as Anonymous ?????
I put my name under my post. But this column is made for "anybody can post" no registration needed.
So what's your problem?

To Yankee: What are the legal docs?
I got my title for the trailer (thx for the corr. spelling! I'm 'n Italian)
What else do I need other than the titleThanks Yankee for your help.
And DK as well.

Insurance for the trailer

Anonymous - 8-7-2005 at 08:40 AM

Thanks again, YankeeIrishman.

I do have an insurance (Mex) for my car already.
Do I need a seperate one for the trailer in Baja?
My insurance agent said they don't insure trailers for the use in Mexixo.
He said I just can use the trailer w/o insurance.
Is that recommended?

Oh, by the way, the trailer still has an Italian licensplate.
(I shipped it over to the U.S. w/ all my household stuff when I moved from Italy last year)
And I do have the Italian title > free and clear.
Do I need a Mexican translation, just in case?

In S.D. nobody cares about that lic.plate.
Once downtown a police officer asked me what kind of lic.plate that is.
I answered, it's an Italian plate.
He looked at it and asked if he can have it for his collection.
But I said that the trailer will be w/o plate at all.
But that was it from his side.
He never worried about not having a CA plate.
( I kept his name and address. If I ever get a CA plate I will give that Italian plate to him, as he was really nice and friendly )

That was a real joker, right?
What I learned in that short time here I guess it was this JR guy.
And by the way, posting as 'JRBaja' or even as 'YankeeIrishMan', or all the other nicknames, is that less anonymous?
Don't want to start a thing here, but to my understanding everything but the full name, any nickname, is anonymous as well.
Even an administrator called 'Q87' is anonymously.
Am I wrong?

could you be the bajawonderer?

Towing & Mexican Insurance

John M - 8-7-2005 at 11:13 AM

From experience, tho it was a few years ago ---

My wife & kids went to La Salina beach a few days ahead of me, getting full Mexican auto insurance on her car. A few days later I came down, alone, got coverage on our Baja bug. Coming home we towed the VW with her car, got hit in TJ at a poorly marked intersection and our Mexican policy wouldn't cover us at all because she had not declared that we'd be towing the VW. Luckily our Allstate Auto Insurance covered (at that time at least) 75 miles into Baja.

I'd offer that you add the trailer to your Mexican auto policy when you enter Mexico, or where ever you obtain your policy.

John M.

Anonymous - 8-8-2005 at 08:45 AM

Whistler and John M, that is certainly a good and very important point.
Trailer behind a car might void the car insurance! Thx for that idea!!!
(The idea is sooo good, could be from me, LOL)
I e-mailed my agent requesting a written statement on that issue.

Yankee: What please is a 'cakewalk' ?
And thanks again to all of you for the help.
As suggested from Yankee, I will report about our Baja experiance.
About registration on this board. I went through most of the headlines looking for anonymious posts.
Can't say that they are mostly troublemaking.
Some very good info in those posts.
Some good suggestions too, but others, posting w/ an anonymous nickname are not catching the point of any suggestion and are complaining about the anonymous thing instead of talking about the facts.
Kinda narrow reaction.
And as I am putting my real name under my post, I guess I am not anonymous at all.
I do not like to make my e-mail or any anything personal public.

Now back to Baja and our upcoming trip.
There are lots of motels in the Santa Rosalia / Mulege / Loreto area.
What about this Conception Bay?
Are there any motels in that area bewteen Mulege and Loreto?
I guess we can make it into the San Quintin/El Rosario area the first day.
The second day down to Santa Rosalia.
I read something about the Catavina area and the local Police chief being a crook.
I will remember that! Good info.

On this two day trip, is there any "must see" item ???
Means, is there anything in any town which we 'should not miss' , otherwise we missed "the most important thing of Baja" ?
We got lots of time, so don't be shy to recommend.
We are already thinking about extending our trip all the way down to Lands End.
Maybe making a loop at the East Cape and Cabos San Lucas and retour.
Otherwise we will miss La Paz, and that looks very nice on the websites.

No my last question for today.
We are taking the trailer with us for carrying all the personal things we need.
And it is a pop-up trailer to sleep in, just in case it is getting dark before reaching a motel.
Is it safe to stay at the road side and have a nights rest?
Thinking about robbery and such.
Well I'm taking my Italian side by side shotgun with me, just in case!
I cut the barrel down to just 30 cm, so it's very handy inside a car or trailer.

Ciao Ragazzi
Claudio (yes that's my name, no phony-melony nick)

"Well I'm taking my Italian side by side shotgun with me, just in case!

If you get caught, you will be spending a LOOONG time in Mexico.

:)

Anonymous - 8-8-2005 at 10:32 AM

bajalou, what does it mean "if you get caught" ?
And 'Yes' we will spend a long time in Baja/Mexico, as we got all the time in the world and made the decission already to stay longer than we planned originally.
Well, that of corse depends on how we will like Baja.
I promised to report!
We are very concerned about such posts like the one from YankeeIrishman: <I had a Bajafun day at the beach>.

Is that reality in Baja?
The beaches w/ broken glass and cigarrette butts etc?
Are there maybe dogs alowed on the beaches???(chitting everywhere?)
Something we do not know in Europe.
Are the beaches maintained?
I mean are there no tractors w/ graders or cleaning devices maintaning the beaches? Garbage collection?
Oh, dear, what will this trip do to us?

ciao
Claudio

bajalou - 8-8-2005 at 10:38 AM

Guns are not allowed in Baja or anywhere in Mexico without some special permits for hunting. If you hide it and it is discovered at customs or on of the checkpoints thruout Baja. you will end up in a Mexican jail "for a looong time"

I think it might even be illegal in the US cut down to that length.

You NEVER know how exacting and complete a look/search will be made of you and your vehicle.

:O

Anonymous - 8-8-2005 at 12:20 PM

oh, oh !
Somewhere in this forum there was a post stating that weapons are legal now in Mexico.
Can't find that post again > I am reading toooo much these days.
So what is correct ?
Legal or not?

Anonymous - 8-8-2005 at 12:21 PM

sorry, last post not anonymous, just forgot my name under it.
Claudio

bajablue - 8-8-2005 at 12:23 PM

Claudio, NOT LEGAL!!!!!

comitan - 8-8-2005 at 02:36 PM

Claudio you could probably rob a bank and get off easier than being caught with a weapon or ammunition, there is a big sign just before the border. If you leave in the morning I would go to at least catavina better to Guerro Negro for the first night in guerro negro the first motel on the right entering town( Vincente )I think is very secure and cheap. Then San Ignacio would be next, you would then have plenty of time for sightseeing, then Santa Rosalia 1 hour you would have plenty of time also to sightsee then spend the night in Mulege motel or beach camp at Santispac.

From the border

jrbaja - 8-8-2005 at 02:43 PM

6-8 hours to Catavi?a. The cop story there is bs. Just follow the rules and you will have no problem.

I have to ask though, why would you want to vacation somewhere that you think you need a gun for protection? Besides visiting the u.s. that is!:o

30 cm?

Not just illegal but WAY illegal. The limit is 470mm or 18.5 inches. The only way it could be shorter is if it came that way from the factory.

But in Mexico that's not what matters. Just the fact that you have it (without a license) will send you away for a LONG time.

mcgyver - 8-8-2005 at 06:45 PM

I would not even post that I knew such a weapon existed, must less that I owned one. The ATF people love to find these kinds of sawn offs in the states, that is what started Ruby Ridge. And as everyone is telling you not only the Mexicans will find it but you will not see the light of day for years. Normaly its 8 years before you go to trial!! They are not stupid people, they do have computers, shortwave radios, fax machines etc and they read forums (ATF & Mexicans) they know your are Italian and have Italian plates. How hard would it be to find you in a country with onlly 1 N/S road??

Oso - 8-8-2005 at 07:11 PM

Just kill all them Mexican Nationalists for your safety !

yankeeirishman - 8-9-2005 at 05:15 PM

Gun? Now you are way off the path here ol' boy! Save that gun for the Kalifornia experience! Mexico I have traveled for 19 + years now. I have NEVER had a major problem in their country. Carry a gun and what? Ask the mugger to hold for a second while you unpack your weapon from the car?

Yeah man...carry that double shotgun and wave it all over the joint. Next time I arrive in Mexico, I am sure that the villagers will ask if I am packing too! Represent our country with a positive image down there...not fearful visions of hatred and untrusting vengeances. Hell?don?t forget the bullet proof vest!

Cakewalk = easy to do

Carrying Firearms

MrBillM - 8-9-2005 at 07:09 PM

The subject of carrying a shotgun reminds me of something amusing I read. Big surprise, Huh ?

Anyway, although it has nothing to do with weapons in Mexico, it is a good object lesson regarding carrying guns onboard.

The story was in Trailer Life magazine quite a few years back. A retired fulltime RVer had a bumper sticker on the back of his motorhome that read "These premises protected by Smith & Wesson". He was parked at a fast-food restaurant and two cops asked him if that was true. He answered yes, he kept it in a drawer next to the kitchen. He was placed in custody for illegal possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle.

Open Mouth, Insert Foot, Pay Dearly.

comitan - 8-9-2005 at 07:36 PM

Mike you would do well if you had a boxer dog like me, she won't let anyone near the car.

Now we are back on track and talking information.

Thx you guys! (exept that one w/ the silly pics. I have no use for something like that)

Mr. Sharksbaja. The gun came with my householdstuff in the container.
Long live the Homeland Security Checking @ the ports, I might say now.
And,,, about the bouillabaisse, that was me, >> no secret.
Just forgot to put my name under the thread.
I guess you called the - "not anonymous" Q87 administrator- to delete that thread.
I just wanted to help, not creating any harm to your , now what????>ego??? business damage??? because of your misspelling.
Which is still wrong on your menue.
It is bouillabaisse, not bouillibaisse.
But your pics with that fish-combo looked good and I bet it tastes good.
It's for sure no bouillabaisse but anyway it looks great!
Well, you are stating not to use Saffran.
That's maybe a mistake.
Saffran and garlic are the main herbs you have to use in any fish-dish if you want to create something original.

O.K., thanks again for all the info I was receiving here.
Even if some questions remain unanswered, we will make the trip!
Starting next week.
And maybe - if this Forum turnes out to be a good one - we will report.

Thanks I'll check it out.

I have no idea about deletions or had anything to do with it. How could I, I don't know them.

The Booya is my own variation and although I could make the "authentic" version I call it "Sharks" booya but I used to call it "Catalina" booya or "Corks'" booya.

I consider food costs very necessary and saffron isn't worth it to me. And besides at $27.95 it's never a mistake. I have never had a complaint in ten years, is that good enough?

Yes, self promotion. Check out the reviews at Yahoo.com if you want the"customers" opinion

Anonymous - 8-9-2005 at 09:44 PM

Hey Mr. Sharksbaja, that was a guess with the deletions. Just a guess!

On the Saffran, or how you spell it in the U.S: Saffron (which is the same of course) I can give you a hint.
There is a Saffron substitute.
Smells like Saffron.
Taste like Saffron.
Is just far less expensive as Saffron.
It is called: AZAFRANES LA BARRACA
Fabricante nacional num. 76 * Azorin, 8-Novelda *
N.S.31.8017/A-53/A

don't make no mistake, that is not Mexican, that is original from Spain.
But it is absolutely cheap.
I got 10 boxes of 100 'carteritas' and paid $5/ea.
Maybe you can figure it somehow through the i-net.

If not, I do have vitamin 'C' towards Spain.(Connections)
We use that stuff mostly for colouring rice and flavoring fish.
Looks good, taste even better.

O.K., so much about that sidestep w/ the bouillabaisse.

If that guy with the silly posters recommends not to post any Baja-Trip experiance here,,,, I've got no trouble with that.
Don't need to post anything.

And I DID NOT make fun of others.
(I guess Mr. Sharksbaja did catch that point)
Wrong spelling remains wrong spelling.
That's not a fun story > you funny-picture-guy-with-no-real-Baja-info-at-all.
Maybe I'll take the time to see what your bamboo enterprise is really all about down there in San Bartolo.
Some other forum users are already very concerned about the fact that you are looking for a partner in that business, but your entire business of growing bamboo is operated on 1 single acre.
With some phony 5 acres in the mountains.
>>> Can you please describe that spot, where those 5 acres are located?
I would like to look at those as well.
Certainly will look at your business in San Bartolo.
You made a good description here, so I will find it.
And thx for your help. Baja related anyway!
ciao
Claudio

"Some other forum users are already very concerned about the fact that you are looking for a partner in that business,"

jrbaja - 8-9-2005 at 10:04 PM

Not sure what concern this is of anyone on here unless they are interested in something unique. And if you are already relaying what "others on here" are gossiping about, how do you say chicken coup groupers in french?

You are more than welcome to stop by the property (just 1 acre) if you wish. If you are seriously interested u2u me for information. Unfortunately, I am in Baja norte right now but may be heading down soon, just not sure yet.

Sharksbaja - 8-9-2005 at 10:24 PM

Saffron
Crocus sativus
Fam: Iridaceae

I am not without ways to use saffron. I have made paella and rice dishes with it and my sister in Cornwall has it in pastries.

My father loved the stuff although the inferior paste he used was not what I would use.

Thanks for the resource however, Claudio

Other Names
Alicante Saffron, Autumn Crocus, Crocus, Gatinais Saffron, Hay Saffron Karcom, Stima Croci, Zaffer
French: safran
German: safron
Italian: zafferano
Spanish: azafran
Indian: kesa, kesram, khesa, zafran

Sharksbaja - 8-9-2005 at 11:01 PM

that's what I thought.;D;)

Yep nameless all knowing wonder

jrbaja - 8-10-2005 at 08:43 AM

My bamboo projects are a "scam". Directed at scamming unsuspecting foreigners. From the Baja Nomads board especially.
Not sure exactly what the scam is, or who exactly I'm trying to scam on here but yep, it's a scam.
As far as my property goes, I really don't see it as any business of yours.
As far as growing bamboo on 1 acre, seems like if you did your homework you would know a few more facts but hey, maybe you can't read that well.
Seems to me that you are more concerned with stirring the pot rather than contributing anything interesting.
So, load up your weaponry in case you are able to find the bamboo because the jaguars seem to love french pastries. The pandas only like pure italian so that wouldn't apply to you.

#1. I am not BEGGING for help. I asked a question and there were lots of good answers from nice folks here. I named them already. You, ********** did not contribute anything about Baja to this thread.
Same w/ ********. Nothing than silly pics. One of which was already deleted. No answer to any question about Baja and how to travel.
#2. I am not 'flaming' ALL the Nomads. As I pointed out already there were lots of good answers and advices what a first time visitor should and should not do in Baja.
Namely from Mr. YankeeIrishMan, DavidK, and plenty of others.
And my special Thanks goes to those who gave good answers.

This forum is possibly devided in two parts.
On the one hand those who really help others with good answers.

On the other hand those who make fun out of newcomers because of their questions, by posting bloody pics and not contributing anything about Baja.
Or did you, ********, answer any of my Baja related questions to this thread?
Maybe it was deleted?
I for sure haven't seen any good answer from you.

Take good care of yourselfs anyway.

Baja related anyway!
ciao
Claudio

If you would email me I have more usefull baja info for your trip. See my profile for address.

Sharksbaja - 8-10-2005 at 01:47 PM

You are correctemundo! Booya was spelled wrongly on my on-line menu.

It's an older pic and I will attempt to correct it later, thanx.

--------------------

There is tons of good info for you here. Use the search feature above and type in your interest. Use one keyword if possible.

On a more serious note........

Some of the Nomads are extremely complex and while it may seem that you understand them, a lot of what they say may be tied to earlier posts and there may be a great deal more you should know about their likes/dislikes. That's why some get put-off. Particularily while trying to draw immediate conclusions about someone.

I am certainly still learning. One thing for sure, make sure your posts stay on target and try not to get too personal. Sometimes though depending on who responds it may not matter what you write.
Passion runs very deep and personal here.

Whatever you do, don't get all personal or you may find yourself up at 4am tearing apart someones post.

I can't say however that I'll keep recommending this board to strangers. They get beat up sometimes and never returno. :(

Sad sometimes, but great for the most part.

You may want to walk gently or your focus and your demeanor may inadvertantly change. And not always for the better!

Some will always disagree, it's their life.

comitan - 8-10-2005 at 01:55 PM

Sharks

Very very good advise, I don't think anyone would find fault with.

Anonymous - 8-10-2005 at 02:58 PM

Mr. Comitan, I am using my e-mail strictly for business as my secretary and others are working w/ that same e-mail as well.
But I highly apreciate your offer.
Maybe I'm geting me another e-mail just for Baja questions and answers.
From your profile I learned you are in La Paz.
There is another town next to La Paz with your name.
Are you living there?

Mr. Sharksbaja, I never intended to 'flaming' you or others.
(what is 'flaming'? or did that guy ment blaming? and just couldn't spell correct?)
So, I am glad you took that spelling issue from the light side.

Your advice in your last post is carefully learned by me.
Unfortunately I have already the feeling that this forum is , well, how to say it for not to be deleted , let me say a difficult or strange one.
I am catching the point what you are intending to tell me about difficult people here.
But that is a damn easy task for me and I will not tear any postings apart
at 4 o'clock in the morning.
No, there are other Baja forums where I can get good answers as well.

So far the good posts outrun the bad ones by far.
Let me keep it this way, every flock has black sheep.
Just attacking me b/c I am not signing up, despite the fact that I am signing my posts w/ my name, is bloody stupid.
Let's forgive those guys! They don't know better.

On the other hand I do not understand why some post are corrected - or edited how you tell it - although there was no bad word in it.
i.e. I answered to Mr Leech and Mr. JRBaja and the names were replaced by >****** (stars)
Is it incorrect to say: Mr.Leech. Or: Mr JRBaja ???
very strange to me, very strange!

I do have a last question to you, Mr. Sharksbaja.
In one of your posts, awhile back, you are calling people from Europe "Euronutts". (one 't' or two, I do not remember)
Please ecxplain that to me.
So, am I an "Euronut?"

Kind Regs
Claudio

comitan - 8-10-2005 at 03:15 PM

Yes I live just north of La Paz, In the housing development we live there is a small resort built and run by Italians, cenntennario also has an Italian restaurant.

Sharksbaja - 8-10-2005 at 03:29 PM

comitan - 8-10-2005 at 06:44 PM

You guys really make it difficult, I copy what you wrote go to google for translation and its only half translated and doesn't make sense.

Anonymous - 8-10-2005 at 06:49 PM

Maybe because two are speaking Italiano and one is speaking Spanish

comitan - 8-10-2005 at 07:01 PM

You are right and I was taught never assume anything!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous - 8-10-2005 at 07:11 PM

Or maybe one speaking both Italian AND Spanish...or in this case..TexMex

Can you prove this ?

jrbaja - 8-11-2005 at 09:39 AM

Anonymous - 8-11-2005 at 09:57 AM

No, Mr. JRBaja, I can not proof it.
But I put my name under each and every post I wrote.
That should be proof.
But there is more (like in TV):
I do not post such 'flat posts'.
Good enough?

Anonymous - 8-11-2005 at 09:58 AM

sorry, now I simply forgot my name under the last post.
Claudio

hahahahahahaha

jrbaja - 8-11-2005 at 12:13 PM

what's a "flat post"? And while we are at it, were you u2u'd by anyone prior to or during our interaction on here?

Straight forward, serious question.

Anonymous - 8-11-2005 at 12:16 PM

what please is a u2u?

JR how do you u2u a anon.

Please notice that after 4 pages of questions and answers -- if you can.

jrbaja - 8-12-2005 at 08:25 AM

I was talking to Oso. You shouldn't take anything personally on here unless you are DK.

Anonymous - 8-12-2005 at 11:36 AM

wrong answer Mr. JRBaja.
You did talk to me by saying: "Anon, never mind, u2u .........."
And talking to me IS personal.
Maybe you don't know the difference.
There are some guys in this board smart enough to explain that to you.
i.e DavidK. He certainly can explain what I mean.
David, I want to thank you for your good info to my question.
Unfortunately Mr.YankeeIrishMan is gone.
He gave me good answers.
So did others as well.
Thx to all of you who gave me info about Baja and driving etc. and no silly pictures.(What has the pic from the Addams guy to do with Baja? Other than there are some ******** [edited immediately by myself to Elite Nomads or Super Nomads] on this board who don't know what to post about Baja.

We are leaving on Sunday.
If some folks change their manners we might report from the trip.
ciao and bye bye for now
Claudio

JR

I'm beginning to think your jealouse that your not part of the chicken coop"s. Because new people that get on this forum that have no axe to grind don't agree with your continual attacks. So now you can attack me, but it won't do you any good because i"m not going anywhere and I'm not going to get into a useless duel with you, because with all of the usefull advise you have gotten from numerus people you still don't get it.

Perfect

Anonymous - 8-12-2005 at 02:23 PM

Well, my time on this board is running out.
Not because of some,, no,, plenty of good advise from good people.
No, I can't stand those dumn comments from so called Elite Nomads.
I wish you good luck in the future w/ this board.
Ciao

You are really an amatuer Clod. You say you sign your own name always when you post.

I have news for you.... your buddy Anon #111 has exactly the same problem with spelling you do.

It seems both Claudio and #111 both say "proof it" intead of the correct English, "prove it".

What are the odds?:lol::lol::lol: million to one?

In fact in my whole life I never heard someone make that error.

Please go away. You're bothersome and you lie.

Intelligent people, when assembled into an organization, will tend toward collective stupidity.

Anonymous - 8-14-2005 at 08:59 AM

And a restaurant owner who neither knows how to cook, nor knows how to spell 'Bouillabaisse' in his menue. should better offer brats from the grill.
But defenately not talk about spelling.
:fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire: Right Sharky?

Sharksbaja - 8-14-2005 at 11:50 AM

right!:lol::lol::lol:

Grilled Brats

MrBillM - 8-14-2005 at 11:56 AM

Sounds Great !

My idea of the perfect Mexican Restaurant would be one offering Hamburgers, Hot Dogs (including brats) and good French Fries.
Forget all the other stuff. Well, maybe BBQ Ribs, too.

Nobody is perfect............
.........but the one who is admitting his mistakes comes close.
Sharky, I like the way you are admitting and posting and thinking and making conclusions.
Not bad.
Close but not too close.
Evrybody can make a mistake.
Nobody is perfect.
Not even a guy who is talking about odds of one million to one.
And is getting close w/ his conclusion, but didn't hit it.

Now, how many Americans will make this mistake?
You wanna say 'I know',
but you spell it 'I no'.
The odds are 10 million to one.

So happened to Sharky under General Baja Discussion started: Baja Bamboo, Donations and ....
Answered by Sharky: Tools of dimensions..............

It is refreshing to see somebody in this board who can admitt something.
Where please are you living when in Mulege?
@ the river, I know that.
But where @ the river?
Would you agree, if you are in Mulege -when? - and I am visiting my folks, that I knock?
