Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of the availability of nursing homes in Baja. My uncle is elderly, and really needs to be in a nursing home
or at least have someone live there full time to watch and care for him. He can't afford a nursing home here in the states, so I suggested to him the
possibility of locating to Ensenada area as a possible alternative. I know he could afford live in help there, but as for actual nursing homes, I am
clueless. Anyone know anything about it?
Of course health insurance is the other thing I would have to consider. Right now he goes to the VA hospitol for a lot of his needs, plus he has a
HMO/Medacare policy that doesn't cost him anything.

I do not have first hand knowledge but I met the owner at the hospital when I was there with my mother. He sat and spoke to us for awhile and was very
pleasant.I'm just offering you this as a place to start looking and get some ideas. His name is Ronald Astorga and the number is 01152-646-182-9838.
They have a website. www.residencialourdes.com. I also heard Michael Bircumshaw ,the editor of the old Baja Calif. newspaper built a place for his parents. At one time
I had the info on that but not anymore. You might be able to ask around about that one but it was maybe 4 or 5 years ago. Good luck. I'll be

Nursing Homes ?

I'm curious about the statement that your Uncle can't afford nursing homes in the U.S.
My wife's mother, now deceased, was in a decent Nursing home in Long Beach for about three years prior to her death. She had no resources other than
her Social Security pension and Medicare which funded her stay completely.
More recently, my wife's older sister stayed in a nursing home in Cerritos under the same conditions prior to her death from Cancer.
No doubt, your Uncle MAY be able to get better facilities and care in Mexico, but decent care is available in Southern California.

Need to clarify. My uncle has some resources of his own. He has about $150,000 in his home and about $120,000 in CD. He would have to sell his home
and exhaust all his money before he could get any state funded help. He doesn't want to do that. My mother desperately needs a home to live in, and
he wants to leave his home to her when he dies, and the balance of his cash to his other sister if possible.
So I was trying to come up with a solution that would allow him to do that.

I have no first hand information on this either but I would think that you could get a live in nurse/housekeeper here for cheaper than any US
home...just an idea.

My mother in law stayed at a low income nursing home in Long Beach and only was ask how much her income was.

...just this last weekend, we had to move my dad into a care home here in Northern Calif. He has resisted, as can be imagined, but needed more
help-at-hand, as it were. He's also got some assets, so here we are tossing about $3800/month for his care in a nice place.
Seems a bit unfair, as it were, when you work all your life, paying for health insurance, and it doesn't cover this kind of care, so he has to use his
'put-away' resources, enriching the health care system even more!
A Baja health care home with a nice view of the sea wouldn't be such a bad thing! Good luck with your search.
