Long Liners in Muleg

rpleger - 8-14-2005 at 08:55 PM

Went out fishing today (sunday) and kept running into long lines about 4 - 5 miles off Punta Chivato and Ines. must have seen 3 long lines the longest was about 4 miles long.
Found one turtle and released it.

Saw and photographed a panga waiting to pick up thier catch.

?I thought long lining was banned in the Gulf of California?

I caught a 100lb+ sail and released it.

rp----you did good!!!!

I too thought long-lining had been banned. What a disaster. I have fished off those islands in our 14' tin boat, and it was great, but never caught a sail THAT big. Well done!!

Saturday night I saw big boats working between Punta conception and Punta Chivato at about 12 am and on. they were not shrimp boats.

A friend of mine ran into one of those last year. The next evening he went out with a cable cutter and cut the line about a 1/2 mile from the end. He tied the line onto his boat and dragged it to shore. Amazing how many people showed up to help with the hauling. They released the live and ate the dead catch. NO ONE asked a thing about where the line came from !!

I hear their long lines occasionally get shorter yet !!

Just a thought ........

I think they should have their arms shortened:no:
