More than 40 percent of Mexican adults say they would move to the U.S. if they could, and 1 in 5 say they would do so illegally if necessary,
according to surveys released yesterday by the Pew Hispanic Center.
Surveys of 1,200 Mexican adults in February and 1,200 in May, conducted in their homes, show that Mexicans' rising education levels have not weakened
the desire to live and work in this country.
More than a third of Mexican college graduates say they would come to the U.S. if they could, and more than 1 in 8 would do so even if they had to
enter the country illegally, according to the surveys, the first of their kind.
"Contrary to what people might expect, the inclination to migrate isn't contained among Mexicans who are poor or poorly educated or with limited
economic prospects," says Roberto Suro, director of the Pew Hispanic Center, a nonpartisan research group in Washington. "They're distributed across
the whole breadth of Mexican society."
Mexicans' willingness to come is driven by a desire to improve their economic status and join friends and family already there, Suro says.
Despite improvements in the Mexican economy, "people with college degrees believe they have greater economic opportunities by migration to the U.S. -
even illegally - than they would staying at home," Suro says. Mexicans are coming from richer, urban areas as well as poor, rural regions, he says.

My guess is that Americans retiring to Mexico do so more because of money. Many retirees have little more than Social Security. If they're lucky
enough they may own a house. With a low income (SS) Mexico looks good for many.
I think you would have a pretty screwed up family to want to get away from them. If so and it were me I'd have left long ago.

amongst my neighbors. Some rich, some poor, some in between. They all had the same answer which was "" and then, "Why"?
I do know many that would like to see Disneyland though.

TW if i may be so bold , I am somewhat distrubed by the Post where you indicated that many people only have Soc. Sec. ,that they reire in Mexico for
that reason.
Many, many americans have double Soc. Sec Benefits, other incomes and move to Mexico for many other reasons than
Money.
After my many years i would tend to say:Americans moved to Mexico for the Way of Life". now many years ago the amount of Income was the reason but as
income has improved for most americans they are going for different reasons, Loreto Bay Villages, is an example, the commuters from TJ and Rosarito, .
It is a great Place to Live!!
TE we are seeing the same thing happen here in the States, with more People making more money and retiring out of saySan diego, they are selling out
going to prescott AZ, St. George Utah, , Others are moving up with better incomes, buying the homes as they become avaiable.
I beleive that as our Economics keeps growing more and more pople will move to Mexico in hopes of a calmer "Way of Life".

I think the percentages would vary widely if broken down regionally. This would correlate to local economies. Native Baja Californios seem generally
ambivalent or not very enthusiastic about emmigration whereas Oaxaque?os may be desperate for it.
A great many of the dead we keep scraping off the desert here are from Vera Cruz, Oaxaca and other non-arid regions. They just don't understand how
easily the sun kills here and are not prepared for the trek.

That's quite true, Skeet, but the fact remains that there are still a lot who only have SS and there life here can be much fuller than anywhere in the
USA.

I am not sure of what you mean, I lived in Loreto for 17 years full time and have had a very Full Life there and I am now enjoying a Full life here in
the Texas Panhandle and I am only 74 yrs young..

Hi Skeet. I don't disagree with what you say and I was lumping a lot in one statement. Saying it another way, people on social security can make it go

There limited dollars/pesos go farther - don't have to scrimp as much for just living costs.

I really believe that family is what keeps most Mexicans in Mexico and most Americans in America. The family pull has to be weighed against the gain
in quality of life when going north or south.
I really doubt that much over 1% of Americans would relocate in Mexico. They just don't have what it takes to leave all of the creature comforts in
the US for the simple wonders of Mexico and it's people.

I was concerned as the Post seem to indicate that there were numerous People in the US just barely esisting on SS.
I must say that of all the people I met in my years at loreto, not many were scraping by on SS.
I think the people who do not plan on their Retirement are not the kind to take off and go toBaja as they did after the Korean War when many
x-servicemen retired and went to live on the Mesico mainland.
Virginia and I lived on $800 a month in Loreto.If a person would like to know how to live very reasonably they can u2u me for details.
