We are headed into town for the celebration...fortunately it is less than a mile. No worry's about being on the road.
I doubt that we make it to el grito, but it is always a good chance to see all of our friends.
I really like the fact that Mexico didnt change all their holidays to Mondays. They celebrate on whatever date it is supposed to be. So we will
celebrate tonight and tomorrow everyone has the day off because it is fiesta national and Saturday no one will feel like going to work and, after all,
it is only half a day.
So now its Monday and we have had Fri, Sat and Sun off anyway!

Two years ago I was staying with Mexican friends in Cabo San Lucas. This was part of my report from that trip.
"I had not realized that Tuesday was Mexican Independence day (What??it?s not Cinco de Mayo?). They celebrate with festivities on the Eve of the
holiday so on Monday I was honored to be taken to a REAL Mexican celebration. I was the only blonde gringa there. The food was good, the entertainment
interesting, and the speeches & the cries of VIVA MEXICO were rousing.
However, the fireworks display was a little unnerving . I had noticed three towering scaffolds behind the stage and later they came alive with
whirling ?pinwheels? and erupting fountains of sparks. Occasionally a few would cut loose and fly out into the audience, but I seemed to be the only
one alarmed at this.
The fireworks display escalated to the high-flying bursts we all know & love to ?Ooohh & Ahhhh? over, but they were set off only a few yards
away and the sparks showered the crowd for about 15 minutes."

I have always admired the fact that Mexicans can squeeze TWO days off work for the "Fiestas Patrias" due to the fact that the "Grito" is celbrated at
midnight and also for the fact that they are are always the same calendar days regardless of the "convenience" (to employers) of changing the date
every year to a Monday. This U.S. custom is ... well, P-nche.

My husband and I did note that there were no other gringos last night either. It was a wonderful celebration and the fireworks were, well, fireworks.
When we got home our dogs were huddled up next to the door waiting for us to let them in. The little darlings got to sleep inside because they were
so upset....a canine plot..no doubt!

From the roof top of the posada, I watched the fire works just a few blocks. Close enough for me, got to watch the show without the crowds and smoke.
Of course, missed the exuburation of the "grito", love that "grito", it's the best. Expect all in life is a trade off, right down to the end.

El Grito is the yell that happens at midnight on Sept 15 when Hidalgo declared Mexican independence. Or at least that is what I think it is. It is
definitely the Yell.
