So WHERE in Canada are you from? bigwig - 9-27-2005 at 08:23 AM
I'm from victoria, b.c.David K - 9-27-2005 at 08:24 AM
Be nice guys!
First, lot's of women travel in Baja (without men), several are here on baja Nomad (Debra, jeans, Lindsay, GeoRock, and 'M' to name a few)...
Second, when you call Baja California (Baja for short) 'The Baja' we assume you are from Canada, as that seems to be the habit for our amigos from the
Great White North...
Just keep reading this and Fred Metcalf's board for lot's of travel info. and I hope some of the 'Baja Gals' come forward to provide the best info.
for you!bigwig - 9-27-2005 at 08:28 AM
Well, I guess I have a lot to learn. where is Fred Metcalf's board, I am still trying to find my way around this site.David K - 9-27-2005 at 08:35 AM
This site is the most active and largest Baja message/discussion forum site... So, there is lot's here for sure. Use the search engine at the top of
the Nomad pages to find a subject or person's posts quickly.
Fred's board is the original/oldest Baja message board, but nothing over 30 days old is saved except for a few special correspondant's posts (like our
own Mike Humpfreville's)...
If I were you and decided to go down, where would you go to and do people travel around or do they tend to hang out in one place. And as a hair
stylist, is there work to be had?sylens - 9-27-2005 at 11:19 AM
as an indirect answer to your question, in ensenada, husband and i pay 40 pesos each for our regular haircuts. that's about 3dollars 70 cents each
(at current exchange rate), every two months or so. rpleger - 9-27-2005 at 12:00 PM
I think that you would find nice people and plenty of hair work in Muleg?.
Fair size gringo/a population and lots of women to take care of.
It's in the middle of Baja, so there lots of things to do.
Fishing
Hiking
Back roading

Where would I get a good map of the area?Diver - 9-27-2005 at 12:11 PM
Call AAA in SAn Diego they have an 800 #.Bonair - 9-27-2005 at 02:35 PM
You can get an excellent map at the BCAA on Pandora Street in Victoria.Marie-Rose - 9-27-2005 at 04:33 PM
Hi bigwig
We met last year on Dallas Road when I was walking our dogs (remember the black and white mexican rescue??)
So gald you are still planning your trip. u2u us and we can meet and go over maps.
Frizkie (also from Victoria) is also a great contact.
Didn't I hear about a guy...
vgabndo - 9-27-2005 at 04:55 PM
who was running around the East Cape area a decade or so ago who had a barber chair in a VW van and was supporting himself "abajo la mesa"? On the
other hand, good hair cuts/styling is one of the real bargains in Mexico. Hard to make a living at three bucks a head.David K - 9-27-2005 at 07:32 PM
Plus you need an FM-3 work visa and prove you are somehow unique before you can compete againt the local population hair stylists who are cutting hair
to feed their family...
Ol' Dodges in Baja
frizkie - 9-27-2005 at 09:31 PM
Hi Bigwig!!
Welcome to the Nomads board. You picked a great place to look for help and advice for a Baja Expedition.
I live in Victoria and I drive an old Dodge van down to Baja every year. I am a single woman and I never have a problem.
I think perhaps I'll u2u you. We gotta talk!! bajaden - 9-27-2005 at 10:28 PM
David is right about the FM3 work visa. I don't want to discourage you, but some serious paper work is in store. The goverment kinda looks down their
nose at outsiders taking work away from the locals. However, if you can convince them that your going to hire local people, your odds improve.
Don't be afraid to travel alone. You'll be quite safe. Just don't travel at night. Animals on the road along with local with no lights. Hit a 200
dollar cow and it becomes a 2000 dollar cow.
Come on down and figure out the rest when you get here. You might hate it. Or, like the rest of us, you might fall under the spell of a wonderful
place.Bob and Susan - 9-28-2005 at 05:52 AM
Fm3 is required for work as mentioned.
We got our easily w/right to work but we won't take jobs away....only add them.
To get this w/o a corporation you need a sponser or employer
We both use the FLOWBEE!!! No haircutters neededwilderone - 9-28-2005 at 08:36 AM
Plenty of other Canadians in Baja -- they're so paranoid of actual Mexicans, they'll be happy to have their hair cut by one of their own.David K - 9-28-2005 at 06:15 PM
Is that how one becomes a 'hose head'???Anonymous - 9-29-2005 at 03:31 AM
'hose head'?Bob and Susan - 9-29-2005 at 05:49 AM
its like a "hat heat"
...as long as you're NOT an Airhead...
That vacuum may suck ALL the air out....them you'll be in troubleTomS - 9-30-2005 at 12:28 PM
Does everyone live in Victoria have a Dodge van and drive to Baja.
I do as well. Are you guys selling my van or what?
Paranoid of Mexicans?????
frizkie - 9-30-2005 at 07:45 PM
Now that's a new one!!! I wonder where that came from......Jeez!!!
Look out !!! Some people will stoop pretty low to get a scrap going on this board.
Truth is, it makes me think a few of these people are paranoid of Canadians. Why? I'll never know.
But ya gotta have a pretty thick skin if you're Canadian and wanna' post here, 'cuz someone'll jump on you every chance they get.....Weird.
Perhaps I am in the wrong place, and maybe I've misunderstood, is this board strictly for US citizens Or do a few of you just have ego problems? Very strange indeed.
Tom's Dodge
frizkie - 9-30-2005 at 07:54 PM
I heard it was up for auction, Tom....
Actually, I have travelled Baja for years in a 4x4 pick up and Pop top camper. Last year I went down for the winter in my Dodge van conversion.
It's even older (by ten years) than my truck. But I have no trouble finding an excellent Taller Mechanico to fix it if anything ever goes wrong.
Which dosen't seem to happen often.
I love my Baja Van it's a 318..great engine, and not too hard on fuel..very reliable.
I think Tucker has a picture of it maybe I can get him to post it for me.
So when are you heading to Baja Tom?Marie-Rose - 9-30-2005 at 08:11 PM
Frizkie
When are you heading down??
Maybe we should all meet at Adriana's for some great Mexican food and share!!
Great Idea!!
frizkie - 9-30-2005 at 08:17 PM
Count me in on that one
I'm working on heading down the beginning of November. Yesterday gave a little added incentive to push ahead with these plans I'm sure I don't have to explain why to you....
How about you and Fred? Is it Dec again for you?Marie-Rose - 9-30-2005 at 08:22 PM
I hear ya!! I leave on the 10th for 5 weeks and Fred is coming a bit later. I will be on my own for a couple of weeks in Jan so would love the
company. Kind of freaked out about being alone there with all those mexicans
I will call you tomorrow!!
Ha! Ha! Ha!
frizkie - 9-30-2005 at 08:30 PM
Maybe you should take down a gun... ( in ref to Fred's Board)
No! No! Wait ..that's not even funny
Hey Frizk
Sharksbaja - 9-30-2005 at 08:31 PM
Maybe you missed some key issues that were discussed in length here and everywhere else. Are Canadians kind to Americans on Canadian message boards?
I am curious now.
I can't imagine anything but a lovey-dovey relationship since the (U.S) media went bananas telling Americans all about public opinion and sentiments
in Canadas press. Don't forget all those polls that indicated your children
think we are an "evil country" as bad as any, and to blame for the worlds problems. Those seeds were planted and tended to for quite a spell.
Maybe THAT'S why!jerry - 9-30-2005 at 09:09 PM
im sure spreadding hate and discontent will solve these problems?? NOT have a good one
Welllllllllll,
frizkie - 9-30-2005 at 09:17 PM
I musta' missed that. Drat!! I'm spending too much time in Baja again
I personally believe that wether we are Mexican, Canadian American, German or what have you, we are all made up of the same stuff ... skin, bones,
organs, and a heart. Some seem to have a larger capacity than others to see beyond borders.
I like to think that I do not judge a person by where they were born, but more by their deeds, and their actions. I am naive enough to trust almost
everyone until they prove to me personally that they do not deserve my trust.
As far as your so called, "Polls" go, thank you for that information, but maybe you could put them here:moon:
u asked
Sharksbaja - 9-30-2005 at 09:28 PM
Not my sentiments but you can easily try to make it that way I guess.
And they certainly are not my polls either. I agree with where they belong but I don't deserve the credit just as you don't feel the same as your
media. Do you?
I think maybe you missed my point. I was pointing out that politics, and that includes international politics rears it's ugly head here, and it
doesn't matter who, what or where you are from. (sigh) Canada just happens to be a topic within other topics.
Sharks
frizkie - 9-30-2005 at 09:37 PM
Yes, you're probably right.
Another reason why I hate POLITICS!! Sharksbaja - 9-30-2005 at 11:07 PM

I'am amazed how people take things personally. What Sharky was saying is the truth. I guess its the old story of kill the messenger.
I could elaborate but I'm tired, and I'm sure I would be wasting my time.
Man, I'm starting to sound bitter. I better take a break. Stella!!!!!!!
